1st look at HBO's new Harry Potter as TV adaptation of books gets underway
The photo released by HBO shows Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, donning the signature Hogwarts uniform paired with round-rim glasses and a lightning bolt scar, not unlike the iconic costume worn by Daniel Radcliffe in the eight-part film series.
The show began production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., and is expected to debut in 2027.
A new round of actors were announced Monday, including Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
The network announced in late May that McLaughlin was cast as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Several high-profile actors have been announced in other key roles, including Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
The new series adaption begins production nearly 14 years after the final movie adaption of J.K. Rowling's books, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, was released in theatres. In addition to the blockbuster movies, the franchise has inspired a Broadway play, video games and theme parks since the first installment was released 28 years ago.
The new series will be "a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books," the network previously wrote, and "will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years."

Emma Watson banned from driving after being caught speeding
Actor Emma Watson, best known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, has received a six-month driving ban after she was caught speeding. Watson was caught driving 38 mph (61 km/h) in a 30 mph (48 km/h) zone in Oxford, England, on July 31 last year. She already had nine points on her licence at the time of the incident; 12 points warrants a ban. The 35-year-old, currently a student at the University of Oxford, was fined £1,044 ($1,918) at a hearing at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. She was not in attendance, according to the BBC. Mark Haslam, Watson's lawyer, told the court that she is a student and 'in a position to pay the fine,' the British outlet said. Watson has been studying for her master's degree in creative writing since 2023. Lead cast announced for The Legend of Zelda live-action film, coming May 2027
The lead actors, along with an expected release date, were announced Wednesday for the live-action film of the popular Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda. The announcement from Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's representative director and renowned video game designer, was posted on X. Link, the main protagonist, will be played by English actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, while English actress Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda. The film will be an adaptation of the Nintendo game launched in 1986. The Legend of Zelda is set in the kingdom of Hyrule, a fantasy world where Link and Zelda attempt to save the kingdom from the evil Ganon. Ainsworth is known for his starring role as Mark Critch in the Canadian comedy series Son of a Critch. He has also played Miles in the Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor, William in Disney's Flora & Ulysses, and the voice of Pinocchio in Disney's live-action remake. Bragason is best known for her roles as Roxy Trotter in Disney's Renegade Nell, and for her roles in the two BBC One series, The Jetty and Three Girls. "I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen," wrote Miyamoto, one of the film's producers and one of the Zelda franchise co-creators, on X. In the same post, he confirmed that the film is set to release in theatres on May 7, 2027. It was originally announced for March 26, 2027, but was later delayed by Nintendo. Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. is co-financing and distributing the film, which will be directed by Wes Ball, director of last year's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Miyamoto is producing it alongside studio executive and producer Avi Arad, the founder and former CEO of Marvel Studios.
