AI lessons for education and the job market

We cannot get away from talking about the impact of artificial intelligence on education and employment. Everyone is using or is being encouraged to use AI in their education systems, at work, and in everyday activities. It does definitely make things easier, faster, and cheaper to accomplish. Yet, it has its downsides — unavoidable transformational consequences — which we must know how to deal with in order to turn them into opportunities and advantages. In education, I saw firsthand how it is being used by students, even seniors, for their research papers and presentations, and I did not like it. How some simply copy-and-pasted whatever it produced without even reading to check for errors, accuracy, or cohesiveness was shocking. There was little originality, creativity, analysis or self-expression. I told my students that by relying on AI to think for you, do your research, and write your papers, you are making yourself obsolete in the job market. Why would someone hire 10 people who will give them the same output by using AI when one person can do that? As using AI technology becomes more accessible, easier, and mostly free, schools should teach and introduce policies for its ethical use. The problem is not only in the lazy, convenient way of using ready-made content. A recent study at MIT's Media Lab on the impact of using ChatGPT on the brain suggested that it could harm learning, especially for younger users. The study found that it affects long-term brain development, harms critical thinking abilities, and weakens memory retention. However, if used properly, AI could enhance learning as opposed to diminishing it. There was little originality, creativity or self-expression Maha Akeel Another study from Microsoft found that the higher the user's level of confidence in AI, the lower the critical thinking, while the higher a user's self-confidence, the greater their use of critical thinking. This is related to how much individuals rely on AI because they have more confidence in it than in their own abilities. According to the study, the ability to engage in reflective problem-solving and independent analysis may decline in those who rely heavily on AI for information retrieval and decision making. An important and worrying finding was that younger participants aged 17–25 — the age group for university students — showed greater dependence on AI tools and lower thinking scores than did older age groups. Integration of AI into the education system poses a dilemma. On one hand, it can serve as a powerful tool to enhance learning, providing personalized feedback, automating mundane tasks, and analyzing large datasets. On the other hand, there is a risk that students may become overly reliant on the technology, leading to a decline in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as reducing learning motivation and engagement. The challenge for educators is to determine where and how to integrate AI to make the most of its benefits, while simultaneously helping students develop their thinking skills. Since this technological advancement will be increasingly prominent in many sectors of work and life, it is important to have frank conversations about it, and continue to refine our education strategies and teaching approaches. Saudi Arabia recently announced that it will integrate AI education throughout the country's public school system — from elementary school up to university as well as technical training and lifelong learning — beginning in the coming academic year. This is a timely and necessary step to adapt to these developments, and to improve the country's global competitiveness and AI leadership in accordance with Vision 2030. However, it is important to keep in mind the benefits and risks, especially for young users. Meanwhile, in the job market, AI is changing the types of jobs and skills needed in the future. New roles emerging include AI trainers and teachers, data analysts and scientists, human-machine teaming managers, and AI ethics and policy specialists. Importantly, AI is creating new job opportunities that require the skills of critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, analytical thinking remains the most sought-after core skill among employers, with seven out of 10 companies considering it essential. This is followed by resilience, flexibility, and agility, along with leadership and social influence. Over the 2025-2030 period, AI and big data top the list of fastest-growing skills, followed closely by networks and cybersecurity as well as technology literacy. Complementing these technology-related skills, creative thinking, resilience, flexibility, and agility, along with curiosity and lifelong learning, are also expected to continue to rise in importance. Conversely, as the use of automation and robots increases, manual dexterity, endurance, and precision skills are likely to decline in demand, with 24 percent of respondents foreseeing a decrease in their importance. Analytical thinking remains the most sought-after core skill Maha Akeel Not surprisingly, 63 percent of employers surveyed globally in the WEF report identified the skill gaps as the biggest barrier to business transformation over the 2025-2030 period. In Saudi Arabia, the figure was 79 percent. Accordingly, 85 percent of employers surveyed globally plan to prioritize upskilling their workforce, with 70 percent of employers expecting to hire staff with new skills, 40 percent planning to reduce staff as their skills become less relevant, and 50 percent planning to transition staff from declining to growing roles. According to the report, on average, workers can expect that two-fifths of their existing skill sets will be transformed or become outdated over the 2025-2030 period. The skills disruption — the share of core skills likely to change — in Saudi Arabia is expected to be 40 percent. A growing focus is on continuous learning, and upskilling and reskilling programs, thus enabling companies to better predict and manage future skill requirements, especially in AI. The Future of Jobs report indicates that 24 percent of employers in Saudi Arabia think that talent is available for hiring in 2025 compared with the world average of 29 percent, but in the Kingdom they are optimistic in that 45 percent expect talent availability to improve in five years, with 69 percent planning to develop the talent of existing workforce, and 55 percent to retain talent of existing workforce. According to the report, as employers in Saudi Arabia scale up technology investments, over 70 percent identify technological literacy as a skill on the rise in the country, followed by demand for skills in networks and cybersecurity, and AI and big data. Furthermore, 38 percent of companies operating in the Kingdom expect to remove degree requirements in order to improve talent availability, compared with a global average of 19 percent. All these foresights and expectations in the job market in relation to AI and its impact require major changes in the education system, not only in what to teach, but also in how to teach and engage with students. This means focusing not only on improving the tools, but also the skills of teachers and trainers.

Writing and learning at stake in the age of AI

I have been having increasing trouble explaining to my colleagues in the newsroom that copying and pasting from the internet or any widely available tools that are based on large language models, such as ChatGPT, is counterproductive for journalists, including for their knowledge and professional development. But to no avail. What I have been experiencing as a news editor is not unique or new, as research has been pointing to the extensive use of writing tools at educational and business levels. In the long run, this could undermine crucial human faculties such as critical thinking and information retention. It is important for the state, society and all learning and content-producing institutions to sound the alarm that continued overreliance on machines will be damaging to humans and society. We should heed the calls of experts who say that many people are unaware that relying only on machine tools to complete tasks will, over time, undermine professional progress and the development of skills. This prevents people becoming better journalists, researchers or academic achievers. It impedes journalists' ability to produce cutting-edge reports and inform society through thoughts and reflections based on new insights. We cannot rely on re-representing what is already available and is just aggregated by the machine again and again. Massachusetts Institute of Technology research, conducted with the participation of 54 students, revealed some alarming findings. The students were split into three groups and were each assigned the task of writing an essay in 20 minutes. One group used ChatGPT, the second a search engine and the last group had only their brainpower. The researchers measured the brain activity of the students during the exercise, while two teachers later marked the essays. The ChatGPT group scored significantly worse than the independent group on all levels. The scientific measures showed that the different areas of their brains connected to each other less often during the exercise. And more than 80 percent of the ChatGPT-aided group failed to quote anything from the essays they had written when asked about its details afterward. The ChatGPT group appeared mostly to focus on copying and pasting and the teachers could easily spot their 'soulless' essays because of their good grammar and structure, despite their lack of creativity, insight and personal touch. It is important to sound the alarm that continued overreliance on machines will be damaging to humans and society. Mohamed Chebaro The results of this preprint study, which is yet to be peer reviewed, resonated with educators and academics, who are grappling with the impact of digital tools on knowledge and education. The team behind the study received more than 3,000 emails from frustrated teachers. Lead author Nataliya Kosmyna emphasized during media interviews that the study proves the need for more research into how artificial intelligence tools are impacting learning and how people can use them more carefully to help the process of learning. However, many from the academic and publishing worlds are already noticing the damaging impact of AI tools being misused by students and writers alike. They make people lazier and less wired into problem-solving or using their initiative. They are also less likely to take ownership and responsibility for what they produce. This research was not the first to identify a strong correlation between the misuse of AI tools and the diminishment of skills such as critical thinking. Younger users in particular are exhibiting greater dependence on AI tools and are consequently seeing lower cognitive scores. These systems' delivery on demand when triggered with the right keywords also decreases engagement in deep analytical processes, the study found. It is a no-brainer, therefore, that a looming shift such as the study suggests — from active information-seeking to passive consumption of AI-generated content — could be extremely dangerous for how current and future generations process, evaluate, curate and store knowledge. If not addressed properly, this could have repercussions beyond academic and content-creation settings. Scientists say it could create broader cognitive development problems, potentially affecting our intellectual development and autonomy as a whole. Tools based on large language models are undoubtedly in the process of revolutionizing our world, especially our educational institutions. With time though, and as the machine excels at generating texts similar to what humans have written or might write in the future — even mimicking genuine conversations — it is feared that humankind might find itself at a loss. If the connection to original sources gets mixed up with fake or fabricated versions, to the point that biases and inaccuracies get built into the information that is churned out on demand, then fact-checking will not only be necessary but also harder to achieve. In an age where our lives are increasingly controlled by tools for our comfort, one must be wary of times to come, when too much comfort ceases to be bliss. Let us hope that a tyrannical age of the machine remains a dystopian fiction. • Mohamed Chebaro is a British-Lebanese journalist with more than 25 years' experience covering war, terrorism, defense, current affairs and diplomacy.

How AI is transforming Saudi businesses, from homegrown startups to global creative agencies

RIYADH: Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the landscape for small businesses, offering innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, creativity, and competitiveness. As technology evolves, many entrepreneurs are leveraging AI tools to streamline operations and drive growth. One of the most significant advantages of AI is its ability to automate repetitive tasks. Tools like chatbots can handle customer inquiries around the clock, freeing up valuable time for business owners to focus on strategic initiatives. This not only improves customer service but also enhances overall efficiency. AI-powered analytics platforms can process vast amounts of data, providing actionable insights that help businesses make informed decisions based on market trends and consumer behavior. In this dynamic environment, AI is transforming small business operations. A notable example is Hams Nabeel, a working mother who founded her business, Thikra, to preserve cherished memories for families. 'There was a clear need for my business idea,' she told Arab News. 'Since I had my daughter, I wanted to preserve her hospital items — like her hat, blanket, and hand bracelet — all in one place.' AI has become crucial in Nabeel's entrepreneurial journey, streamlining various aspects of her operations. 'ChatGPT helped me expand my business by crafting a clear structural plan,' she said. What typically took weeks can now be accomplished in minutes, providing clarity when she faced uncertainties. AI also assisted Nabeel in comparing 3D printers and defining her business's vision. 'AI guided me in crafting my mission and vision and even generated social media posts,' she said. For financial management, she relies on QuickBooks, which automates tasks and offers valuable insights. Furthermore, Nabeel uses Salla, a website creation tool that simplifies online store management. 'Creating a business is so easy with Salla,' she said, allowing her to focus on creativity rather than technical details. In creative sectors, AI tools are essential for content creation and design. From generating social media posts to developing marketing materials, AI helps small business owners maintain a robust online presence without extensive resources. 'We have traditionally always been creatives before tech developers, but with AI it is now enabling us to combine both,' Denis Bodart, who operates a creative animation agency called Feed Me Light in London and Riyadh, told Arab News. 'We are now building more creative tools and AI products, including a new SaaS (Software as a Service) platform focused on the out-of-home advertising sector, which allows us to dynamically display content on various screens at once. 'Imagine walking through a city filled with screens that communicate and showcase engaging, interactive content. For example, the displays can respond to the latest football or esports results, presenting teams in an exciting manner. 'They can also adapt to weather conditions and customize their content based on audience presence in events, venues, and shops.' This section contains relevant reference points, placed in (Opinion field) Bodart highlighted how AI agents support his team. 'By training AI agents to understand our business more, we can use these agents to help support our teams, providing a helping hand with more repetitive tasks such as receipts, bookings, data fetching, or even helping enhance our marketing and sales teams, amplifying our business's online presence.' He added: 'For Saudi Arabia, the strategic integration of AI holds immense potential to create a truly transformative and positive impact on how they approach upcoming global events such as the Winter Olympics, Asian Cup, and World Cup events. 'This technology can significantly elevate fan engagement, optimize operations, and craft unparalleled experiences, setting new benchmarks for global sporting events hosted in the Kingdom.' Integrating AI allows small businesses to provide seamless customer experiences. Automating processes like order management and payment processing enhances customer satisfaction and loyalty. 'It's like having a full creative team in your pocket.' Salwa utilizes AI to generate content ideas, animate scenes, write captions, and redesign photos — tasks that once required extensive time and resources. For her fitness content, Salwa has eliminated the need for models or physical products. 'I can animate people, create scenes, and even showcase products being used — all without hiring anyone or incurring upfront costs,' she said. This capability allows her to build a complete brand presence independently, showcasing the democratizing power of AI. The freedom AI provides is substantial for small businesses. By enabling entrepreneurs to launch ideas, test visuals, and create professional content quickly and affordably, AI empowers them to stand out in a crowded market. 'AI is literally my assistant now,' said Salwa. AI also reduces costs associated with traditional modeling. Additionally, AI facilitates content creation and scheduling, allowing businesses to maintain a consistent online presence effortlessly. Platforms like Salla and Zid are enhancing the landscape for small businesses in Saudi Arabia. These platforms leverage AI to optimize customer interactions, enabling efficient order scheduling, carrier connections, and targeted marketing messages based on customer data. Such features not only save time but also enhance the overall customer experience. AI has emerged as an invaluable asset for small businesses, offering innovative solutions that enhance productivity, creativity, and financial management. Integrating AI tools can significantly transform the entrepreneurial journey, enabling working mothers and small creators to thrive in today's competitive market. With AI as a partner, the possibilities for growth and success are limitless. As small businesses in Saudi Arabia continue to embrace these technologies, they open the door to a future where creativity and efficiency flourish, paving the way for new ideas and opportunities. AI is a powerful ally for small businesses, empowering them to optimize operations, enhance marketing efforts, and improve customer experiences. As more entrepreneurs embrace these technologies, the potential for growth and innovation continues to expand.
