Italy scrumhalf Varney joins Exeter Chiefs

Reuters20-03-2025

March 20 (Reuters) - Italy scrumhalf Stephen Varney has signed for Exeter Chiefs from French side Vannes ahead of next season, the English Premiership club said on Thursday.
Welsh-born Varney previously made 43 Premiership appearances for Gloucester but after being out of favour this season, which saw him omitted from Italy's squad for the November internationals, he joined Vannes in October.
Varney has made five Top 14 appearances at Vannes, all off the bench, and was recalled to Italy's squad for the Six Nations, where the 23-year-old started against England and came on in the final match to score a try against Ireland.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining Exeter Chiefs and getting back into the Premiership," Varney said in a club statement.
"As soon as the opportunity came up, it just felt like the perfect fit."
Varney, who has made 32 appearances for Italy since making his debut in 2020, will join another member of the antional team squad at Exeter, number eight Ross Vintcent.
The Chiefs, currently second-from-bottom in the Premiership standings, appointed Rob Hunter as head coach on Wednesday to replace Ali Hepher.

Wales head coach twist as Steve Tandy ruled out after new WRU chief's arrival

Wales head coach twist as Steve Tandy ruled out after new WRU chief's arrival Wales' search for a new head coach is almost at an end with an appointment imminent Steve Tandy was a leading contender for the Wales job (Image:) Wales' search for a new head coach has taken a twist after Scotland boss Gregor Townsend poured cold water on the prospect of Steve Tandy succeeding Warren Gatland. WalesOnline understands Tandy was the clear front runner at one stage but the Welsh Rugby Union's new director of rugby and elite performance, Dave Reddin, started the process almost from scratch upon getting appointed. Tandy is currently Scotland defence coach and Townsend is adamant he will not be leaving his backroom team as things stand. ‌ 'Steve Tandy is going nowhere," said Townsend. ‌ 'Yeah, unless something changes that's not happened now, which would be another club or country approaching him and whether that would be allowed to happen anyway. Phil Mickelson row blows up amid LIV Golf ace's mean dig at commentator's family

A certain LIV Golf contender has been embroiled in a war of words with one pundit for more than a year, and the pair have once again taken aim at each other online The feud between Anthony Kim and Brandel Chamblee shows no signs of cooling off. Especially after their latest exchange ahead of this weekend's US Open at Oakmont Country Club. The pair have been at loggerheads several times over the past 12 months and more. Golf Channel analyst Chamblee has been consistent in his criticism of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf League, which Kim joined in 2024 following a 12-year hiatus from the sport due to injuries. ‌ Former PGA Tour pro Chamblee has also openly criticised Phil Mickelson, the first high-profile player to defect to LIV. And Mickelson was once again the subject of Chamblee's scathing remarks when a fan questioned if he had watched the recent LIV Virginia event. ‌ "I watch, but generally it's like watching a race of boxcars and being told they are F1 race cars," Chamblee responded on X. "The only time anyone seems to pay any attention to LIV is when Mickelson or [former LIV Golf CEO Greg] Norman make insanely idiotic comments about the skill of LIV players. "Phil Mickelson has mastered the public art in which self-righteousness congratulates the celebrator. He and his LIV compatriots, all of them subject to the dramatic irony of having resigned themselves to play purely for money - not for history or for their respective countries - but purely for money, and now present to virtually no purpose, their presence in major championships is likely attended by a sense of urgency, the exact opposite no doubt, of the lack of urgency at LIV events." Kim, 39, couldn't resist a cutting counter and took a personal swipe at Chamblee's family life: "We all can like or dislike whoever we want, but at least Phil Mickelson's kids still talk to him. Have a great US Open, Brandy." That barb was delivered complete with a mocking heart emoji. And it isn't the first time sparks have flown between the pair. Chamblee's repeated takedowns of LIV Golf provoked Kim's ire last year, particularly when the former seemed supportive of a collaboration between the Saudi-backed circuit and the PGA Tour. In response, California-born Kim lashed out with a fiery tweet in May 2024. "Ramble Chamblee @chambleebrandel ur such a p***y 4 beating on ur chest and basically saying never retreat and hypocritically retreat," he wrote. "It is well known this talentless fool is disliked by most people in the golf world. U still gonna cover golf if @livgolf_league is involved?" ‌ Chamblee, a one-time PGA Tour victor and former world No. 58, delivered an extensive rebuttal. And he pinpointed a particular irony in Kim's barb. The analyst retorted that Kim's dig was "about as inaccurate as a lot of Mickelson's drives and sadly ironic coming two tweets after you asked for advice on raising your daughter that you would refer to someone as a female body part in a juvenile attempt to denigrate them." ‌ Kim, who was critical in the United States' 2008 Ryder Cup win alongside Mickelson, didn't hold back in a subsequent appearance on the Country Club Adjacent podcast. It was there he criticised Chamblee for "over-talking" golf legend David Duval during a Golf Channel discussion about what it's like playing in a Ryder Cup. "How the f*** would you know? Here's David Duval, who was No. 1 in the world and played on multiple Ryder Cup teams, has all these sorts of records, won a million times," said Kim. "You're over-talking him about what it's like and what they're feeling? "If we were talking about, like, what it's like to drive to a Korn Ferry event and miss the cut, we would call you, Brandel. But we don't do that, y'know? We don't do that."
