
More than 300 RTÉ staff apply for voluntary exit programme
A total of 325 RTÉ workers have applied for a voluntary exit programme as the broadcaster aims to cut staff numbers by up to 400.
The scheme that opened last month closed today. Payments for those who leave will be capped at €300,000.
Workers who are approved will leave the organisation by the end of this year.
In an email to staff this evening, RTÉ director general Kevin Bakhurst said the voluntary exit programme (VEP) was now closed.
'I can confirm that we received a total of 325 applications,' he said. 'As you know, this VEP comprises a Voluntary Severance (VS) and Voluntary Early Retirement (VER) scheme and was open to employees who will have completed at least two years' continuous service on the date their employment ceases.'

He said applications would be approved only where a robust business case was made, and it could be confirmed that the role can be suppressed or that equivalent savings can be made by suppressing an alternative post and, or redeploying an employee into that role.
Mr Bakhurst said applicants could choose to accept or decline an offer of VS or VER.
'Where decisions are straightforward and approved by RTÉ's leadership team and the RTÉ board's Remuneration and Management Committee, we will make every effort to allow these people leave the organisation as early as is practical, without unduly impacting our operations,' he said.
'All applications will go through a five-stage review process throughout the coming months, as previously outlined, with final decisions on all applications being made by the leadership team and final oversight by the RTÉ board's Remuneration and Management Committee.'
He said a review of applications had already begun.
Mr Bakhurst said while there may be exceptions, communication of final decisions would start from September 1, 'with exits of successful applicants taking place on October 31, November 30 and December 31'.
Staff with over two years' continuous service on their departure date are eligible to apply.
Those with between two and five years of service will receive four weeks' pay per year of service.
Those with five to 10 years' service will receive five weeks' pay per year of service.
Those working at RTÉ for more than 10 years will get six weeks' pay for every year of service.
In a previous email to staff, Mr Bakhurst said any future exit scheme could be less financially beneficial than this one.
He confirmed that the Department of Public Expenditure had given RTÉ approval to open the scheme this year.
Senior management are not eligible to apply. The exit scheme was part of RTÉ's five-year strategy announced in 2023.

Enterprise Ireland asked for pay bump for its chief executive
The agency told the Department of Enterprise late last year it was looking to recruit a new CEO with a pay package worth €300,000 per year. In a sanction request last December, the agency said it wanted to 'attract the highest possible calibre of candidates' including CEOs from the private sector. It said the €300,000 package was not at private sector standards but 'would send a strong signal to the candidate market for this role'. The Department of Enterprise responded that a robust business case would be needed for raising the salary up from the agreed level of around €230,000 per year. Two weeks later, Enterprise Ireland submitted a revised document, this time saying it was looking for a salary of €270,000. The sanction request said: 'The CEO role is critical to the growth of the Irish economy while ensuring the effective leadership, direction, governance, client service delivery and internal transformation of the agency.' The Department of Enterprise cautioned, however, there was almost no chance of getting an enhanced pay package approved by the Department of Public Expenditure. A senior official said it was a 'substantial increase in pay' that would mean the CEO was paid more than a department secretary general or the boss of the IDA. An email in January said: 'We envision [the Department of Public Expenditure] will have significant concerns with the proposed salary, particularly as it could have wider public sector pay implications whereby other non-commercial semi state agencies could cite Enterprise Ireland when making future business cases. 'While the rationale outlined in the business case is well founded and has merit, [we think the department] will be reluctant to sanction the post given the high base salary requested.' Officials also said Enterprise Ireland plans for filling the post quickly seemed 'incredibly ambitious' given how long the Department of Public Expenditure would need to assess the business case. They also asked for a copy of any analysis the agency had conducted which underpinned the case for a higher salary. Later that month, Enterprise Ireland dropped the enhanced request and asked to proceed with the appointment at the original rate of €229,949-per-year. A copy of the conditions of service said: 'Candidates should note that entry will be at the minimum of the scale and will not be subject to negotiation.' In early February, the Department of Public Expenditure gave the go-ahead for the job to be advertised at the old salary level. It was subsequently filled with the appointment in May of Jenny Melia, a long-serving senior executive at Enterprise Ireland. By the time the announcement was made, the pay level for the post had risen to around €235,000 as part of pay restoration for the public sector. Asked about the discussions, a Department of Enterprise spokesperson said the salary for the Enterprise Ireland CEO was on a single point pay scale. 'At the time of the first draft business case this was set at €229,949. However, due to a pay adjustment in March 2025 the set remuneration was increased to €234,548,' they said. 'It is government policy that all appointments from open co mpetitions are at the minimum point of the relevant [scale].'

Young people have 'nothing to vote for', Sheridan says
Businessman Gareth Sheridan has said that he is seeking the presidency to speak out for young people in Ireland who "are completely disenfranchised". "There's nothing to vote for. They don't have a voice, and they're not listened to," he told RTÉ's News at One. He said that he is committed to "giving the younger generations who are the engine room of the country a voice," "the under 40s who can't buy a home". "I want to be a representative for everyone," the 35-year-old, who is from Terenure in Co Dublin, added. Asked which councils are supporting his candidacy, he replied: "I can say that I'm very confident that we have at least four proposers and seconders". He will "be reaching out to the councils directly now to secure that nomination", having "been primarily speaking with Independents". Having built up a successful pharma firm in the US, Mr Sheridan said that he and his young family have "returned home now" and are "establishing ourselves back in Dublin again", something he knows "so many others" are unable to do. He said that he was inspired to run in part by "the nurses in Australia holding up signs asking for a reason to come home". "I think there's a real division in the country now that's quite concerning and troubling," he added. Insisting that Ireland "is on the brink of being the perfect economy, perfect country", Mr Sheridan revealed that he will be funding his campaign "from my savings". "It's not in my personality to sit back idle and, you know, watch from afar as a situation unfolds, if I think I can add benefit to it." "Over the last year, I've been working on this quite diligently and coming at it with a real focus," he said of his presidential bid. "I'm a very proud Irish person. I think the time has never been more important on our history for a young president, particularly with how younger people in this country are feeling," Mr Sheridan "I did what's ingrained in our DNA historically is that we all go and we spend our time abroad, but only recently has your bank account dictated if you can come home." "I'm really troubled by the fact that we've created almost this 'getting to know your grandparents through an iPad' culture," he said. Mr Sheridan said that he had not asked for advice from Seán Gallagher, a former presidential candidate who, at one stage, was president of the board of Nutriband. Asked if he would sell his shares in Nutriband, Mr Sheridan said he would "continue to have a stake in the company". "And I know there are certain limitations that would be discussed at the proper time," he added. He acknowledged that Nutriband had been investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission after "we had a disclosure in one of our filings that we rectified" regarding "incorrect information" the company had "put out". The process "was a bit drawn out," he said. President Michael D Higgins is "the grandfather of Ireland" who has "done an excellent job", Mr Sheridan said. However, he added: "I don't believe the position of President should be that of a politician." Mr Sheridan revealed that he has never been a member of a political party, nor was he active in student politics. "I think it's important that the only candidates we consider in this upcoming election don't come from only within party the people of Ireland should choose the President of Ireland and not the people of Leinster House. "I don't think transitioning now to affiliate with a party would make sense," he said.

What's the social impact of food delivery drones in Irish skies?
Analysis: There are many issues from noise to privacy which need to be considered around fast food drone deliveries in Ireland Back in 2020, a RTÉ report on Manna's new drone delivery service showed two cappuccinos being delivered by one of the company's drones in Oranmore in Co Galway. A member of the public summarises the milestone as 'this is space age!' Five years on, Manna is the leading company operating drone deliveries in urban areas in Ireland, with a service which appeals to those looking for a futuristic and novel way for ordering their takeaway pizza or coffee. Other drone delivery companies are also conducting trials and operating in Ireland. This includes Wing, operated by Google's parent company Alphabet that has conducted trials in Lusk and South Dublin and Iona, a company focused on deliveries to rural and underserved areas. From RTÉ Radio 1's Saturday with Colm Ó Mongáin, the positives and potential negatives that come with drones On its website, Manna promotes its drone delivery service as beneficial to local communities, with fast delivery, cleaner air and less traffic. They address complaints about issues of privacy by arguing that the drone cameras only operate when deliveries are being lowered. In terms of noise pollution, Manna refer to a report undertaken by Dr. John Kennedy, Associate Professor in Vibrations, Acoustics and Dynamics at Trinity College Dublin. This study analyses the noise of their drones using their Blanchardstown delivery service and claims its fly-over noise is just marginally above the noise found in a 'typical urban setting with steady traffic'. But what is the social impact of such novel technologies as they are implemented at a much faster pace than any means of adequately regulating them? Issues other than noise need to be taken into consideration when analysing this. For example, scaling up drone delivery services across cities might involve an increase in the number of drone stations similar to Manna's Blanchardstown base, which has been subject to complaints about noise and privacy intrusion. It might see the development of larger hubs, such as the Amazon drone-beehive concept, a multi-storey tower surrounded by drone launching pads and with terminals for truck delivery at ground level. While there are EU regulations on the operation of drones above 250 grams in weight or ones that record personal data (image or sound), there is a lack of information about drone flight pathways: for example, there is no drone equivalent to the flight tracking website Flightradar24. The only information available, thanks to recent EU regulations, is the geographical zone map for the usage of drones across Ireland. Safety concerns about the social impact of drones have been well documented. An academic paper from 2016 records concerns including navigation and piloting mistakes, crashes into public infrastructure (such as electricity poles), roads or private property, hijacking of their GPS systems, and the possibility of the payload becoming unattached during flight. It also points out that both the freedom from harm and the freedom from fear of harm are basic human rights. It's no surprise that local Irish communities are starting to mobilise around this issue and taking the matter into their own hands considering the lack of adequate discussion and consultation on the use of drone delivery services. Manna's plans to operate drones from other areas in Dublin, such as Dundrum and Glasnevin, have already ran into objections and opposition. Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Co Council said they have received 148 submissions over Manna's proposal to locate a new aerial delivery hub on lands to the rear of the Holy Cross Church in Dundrum. Writing on behalf of the Holy Cross Church and Pastoral Centre, Monsignor Paul Callan said their objection was on the basis of the drones potentially crating a "hostile noise environment" against the Centre's aim to offer "a quiet respite to the demands of modern life". From RTÉ Radio 1's Liveline, listeners call in to give out yards about drones Manna's counterargument is that they have support from local residents in the areas where they operate and they have submitted a letter in support of their drones to Dublin 15 local representatives signed by 400 local residents. But Cllr John Walsh, representing Castleknock in Dublin 15, launched an online petition calling on the Government to regulate commercial drone delivery services, which he said are impacting communities across Dublin 15. Walsh's petition has gathered more than 1,100 signatures to date, nearly three times the number claimed by Manna. In some cases, local communities have engaged directly with Manna to address their concerns. In the Glasnevin/Drumcondra area, the Griffith Avenue & District Residents Association has mobilised the local community and subsequently arranged a meeting with Manna to discuss and set exclusion zones from drone deliveries. All these developments highlight the pressing need for a much wider consultation process with the whole Dublin population on this matter, rather than unevenly distributed and localised interventions. It also highlights the need for more transparency and better understanding of the need and rights of citizens rather than implying that the issues can be simply resolved through technical improvements. This will become increasingly important as more innovative and 'smart' technologies are implemented in Dublin and other major urban areas in Ireland, with ever increasing autonomy and the use of AI, and all its potential issues. Most importantly, we need to be able to understand how all these technologies can impact us before they arrive unannounced at our door with a greasy takeaway.
