Man's body found at construction site in Bangsar
Brickfields police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said an investigation has begun into the death of the man.
PETALING JAYA : Police confirmed the discovery of the body of a man at a construction site in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, at about 5pm today.
Brickfields police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the man's identity had yet to be ascertained.
'An investigation is ongoing and efforts are under way to remove the body from the site,' he told FMT.
In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur fire and rescue department said it received an emergency call for assistance to retrieve the body at about 5pm.
The Pantai fire and rescue station's senior fire superintendent, Wan Shahrir Azizi Wan Said, said his team discovered the body in the water-filled lift shaft of a building under construction on Lorong Maarof.
'We are waiting for a pathology team from University Malaya Medical Centre to collect a DNA sample from the deceased. Police are present at the scene,' he said.

Police sergeant killed in motorcycle crash on NSE near Kuala Kangsar
IPOH, June 7 — A police sergeant was killed while on his way home to Kedah after the motorcycle he was riding skidded at Kilometre 253.7 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) northbound near Kuala Kangsar yesterday. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said in the incident at about 7.24 pm, the victim Shamsul Ishak, 58, who was attached to the Special Branch of the Kedah contingent police headquarters sustained injuries to his left rib area. 'Further investigations found that when the victim reached the location of the incident, he was believed to have lost control (of the motorcycle) and veered off, crashing into the metal road divider, causing him to be thrown off. The victim, who was severely injured, was taken by ambulance to Taiping Hospital for further treatment. 'However, he was pronounced dead at around 9.24 pm in the hospital's emergency ward,' he said. He also said the victim was believed to have been on holiday and making his way back home to Alor Setar, Kedah after meeting with his friends across the state. He added that further investigations are still ongoing and the case is now being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama

Midnight crash in Jerantut kills five family members, three others injured in two-vehicle collision
KUANTAN, June 7 — Five members of a family were killed in a two-vehicle collision on Jalan Jerantut Feri, Jerantut, around midnight last night. Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Razam Taja Rahim said the incident, which occurred around midnight, involved a Perodua Bezza and a Toyota Alphard. He said three men and two women, aged between 17 and 26, who were travelling in the Perodua Bezza, died at the scene. Two of the victims were trapped inside the vehicle, while the other three were thrown out due to the impact. 'The victims in the Toyota Alphard comprised two men and one woman, all of whom sustained injuries,' he said in a statement today. He added that initial investigations revealed the Toyota Alphard was travelling from Pulau Tawar to Jerantut, while the Perodua Bezza was on its way from Bota, Perak, to Jerantut. Mohd Razam said firefighters used rescue tool equipment to extricate the trapped victims, and all five deceased were handed over to the police for further action. He added that the three injured victims were transported to a nearby hospital by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) ambulance. — Bernama

Student questions lack of recognition for prestigious international events

(Asia Youth International Model United Nations pic) PETALING JAYA : A secondary school student has questioned the education ministry's policy of awarding marks for co-curricular activities only for recognised programmes, after failing to receive any credit for participating in an international youth conference. Arishah Rusydan, 17, said she was denied marks under the Psychometric Assessment and Assessment of Physical Activity Co-curriculum (PAJSK) despite emerging with the 'Best Delegate' award at the 16th Asia Youth International Model United Nations in Kuala Lumpur recently. The event, which brought together 1,000 participants from 38 countries, was not endorsed by the ministry and therefore did not qualify for PAJSK consideration. 'Imagine winning first place in a prestigious international competition, only to be dismissed because it wasn't endorsed by the ministry,' the SMK Convent (M) Kajang student told FMT. Arishah said teachers advised her to focus instead on programmes that were 'worth her time' – referring to ministry-approved events. Under PAJSK, only activities endorsed by the ministry qualify for co-curricular marks, which account for 10% of the merit score used in university admissions and scholarship applications. External certificates, even from rigorous or internationally recognised events, are not accepted. Arishah pointed out that the policy could discourage students from taking part in global events that help build practical skills and self-confidence. 'The system should allow a process for recognising unendorsed competitions and certificates. It would help validate students' efforts and promote self-driven learning,' she said. She urged the ministry to review PAJSK guidelines to reflect real-world achievements rather than limiting recognition to a fixed list of approved activities. 'If this strict system continues, students who push beyond its boundaries will remain unrecognised. It disheartens us,' she said. She said her experience may reflect the frustrations of other students who feel sidelined despite meaningful achievements outside the classroom. 'Let students build real skills, not just chase marks. Recognising our achievements can unlock potential and help us grow – which is what PAJSK was meant to do in the first place,' she said. Arishah said she contacted the education ministry via email to seek clarification. In reply, the ministry said PAJSK marks are only granted for programmes by external agencies that follow official procedures. These procedures include submitting an application at least 45 days before the event and obtaining formal recognition – rules the ministry said are in place to protect students and ensure proper oversight. Participation in programmes under other ministries, such as the higher education ministry, does not automatically qualify one for PAJSK marks. However, Arishah said it was 'ridiculous' to expect international organisers to be aware of such procedures and apply for recognition when hosting events in multiple countries. The ministry did not respond to further queries on the matter.
