Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for making false claims of former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray accepting the Mashelkar committee's report on the three-language policy.
Addressing the media, Raut stated that lying was the BJP's 'national policy.', further challenging the BJP that if Thackeray had submitted the Mashelkar committee report, it should have been made public.
'Lying is the BJP's national policy. These people are working with this policy in Maharashtra. If Uddhav Thackeray had submitted a report on the Mashelkar committee, it should be made public. A committee report has been released and placed in the cabinet. Can't this be discussed? You forcefully discussed Hindi with the cabinet -- you did it because it's a national policy. If any national policy comes before the state, then discussing it is very important. Devendra Fadnavis has become the chief minister three times--does he not have that much knowledge?' Raut said, addressing a press conference.
Earlier on June 29, the Maharashtra government had cancelled the two orders on the implementation of the three-language policy after facing heavy criticism from the opposition, and being accused of 'imposing Hindu' on the people of the state.
On June 24, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while making an announcement on the three-language formula had alleged that it was former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray who had accepted the recommendations of the Dr Raghunath Mashelkar committee to introduce a three-language policy from class 1 to 12, and had also constituted a panel for its implementation, according to a press note by the Maharashtra Government.
'The decision on the Three-Language Formula was taken by Uddhav Thackeray himself during his tenure,' Fadnavis said.
Following the announcement, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray said that the government resolutions were cancelled solely due to the pressure from the Marathi people.
'The decision to impose the Hindi language under the pretext of teaching three languages from the first grade has finally been withdrawn. The government has cancelled the two GRs related to this. This cannot be called belated wisdom, because this imposition was withdrawn solely due to the pressure from the Marathi people. Why the government was so adamant about the Hindi language and who exactly was pressuring the government for this remains a mystery,' Raj Thackeray wrote on X.
Raj Thackeray further defied the formation of the committee on the three-language policy, saying that they assume this decision has been permanently cancelled and the government shouldn't create 'confusion with the committee's report again.'
'One more thing: the government has once again appointed a new committee. I say clearly, let the committee's report come or not, but such actions will not be tolerated again, and that's final! The government should engrave this in their minds forever! We assume this decision has been permanently cancelled, and the people of Maharashtra have assumed the same. So, do not create confusion with the committee's report again, otherwise, the government should note that this committee will not be allowed to function in Maharashtra,' he said. (ANI)

Denying trans woman status of a ‘woman' violates Constitution, says Andhra Pradesh HC
Denying a transgender woman the status of a 'woman' is unconstitutional, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has held. Justice Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa in an order on June 16 said that a trans woman married to a man is entitled to file a criminal complaint of cruelty and harassment against her husband and his relatives under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. This section addresses cruelty inflicted upon a married woman by her husband or his relatives. The High Court made the observation while hearing petitions to quash a criminal case filed by a trans woman against her husband, his parents and a relative. 'To deny a trans woman the status of a 'woman'…solely on the ground of her reproductive capacity is to perpetuate discrimination and to violate Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution,' the order said. The High Court called such an argument 'deeply flawed and legally impermissible.' While Article 14 ensures equality before the law, Article 15 prohibits discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth. Article 21 guarantees the protection of life and personal liberty. The order also stated that a narrow view of womanhood based on the ability to reproduce 'undermines the very spirit of the Constitution, which upholds dignity, identity, and equality for all individuals, irrespective of gender identity.' The trans woman married the man in 2019 according to Hindu rites. She later filed a complaint with the Ongole Police, alleging that her husband left her and that she received threatening messages. The police filed a chargesheet against the husband and his family for cruelty under Section 498A and for offences under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. In their petitions to quash the criminal case, the husband and his family argued that the complainant, being a trans woman, could not be considered a 'woman' under the anti-cruelty law. They claimed that since she cannot bear a child, she could not be seen as a woman in the 'complete sense'. In its order on June 16, the High Court drew support from several landmark Supreme Court judgements. It cited the 2014 National Legal Services Authority v Union of India verdict, which had recognised the right of transgender persons to self-identify their gender. The order also referred to the 2023 Supreme Court judgement on same-sex marriage. It noted that while the top court did not grant a universal right to marry, it unanimously affirmed that transgender persons in heterosexual relationships have the right to marry under existing laws. Pratapa concluded that the complainant, being a trans woman in a heterosexual marriage, could not be deprived of her right to lodge a complaint against her husband and his relatives. However, while ruling on the substance of allegations of cruelty made by the woman, the High Court said that the claims were 'bald and omnibus' and lacked specific details. It held that allowing criminal proceedings against the man and his parents to continue would amount to abuse of the legal process. The court went on to quash the criminal proceedings against the accused persons. However, it clarified that a trans woman in a heterosexual marriage would have protection under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code.

Telangana chemical factory blast: Death toll rises to 12 as four more bodies found at accident site
Sangareddy (Telangana) [India], June 30 (ANI): The death toll in the explosion at a chemical factory in Telangana's Sangareddy district rose to 12 after State Minister Vivek Venkatswamy said that four more bodies were recovered from the accident site on Monday. Telangana Ministers Venkatswamy and Damodar Raja Narasimha visited the site, where a blast occurred earlier in the day. Speaking to the media, Venkatswamy said that currently, 12 people are in critical condition, whose treatment is underway. 'Nearly 63 people reported for work at this factory this morning. Initially, it was said that a reactor blast had occurred in the factory. We have just visited the site, and we now know that it was not a reactor blast,' he said. 'The factory incharge also lost his life in the accident. There is no one here who can tell what exactly happened out of the 63 people who reported here in the morning. We have learned that eight people have died. Right now, four more bodies have been recovered. Twelve people are critical with burn injuries. The remaining 22 people have 20-25% burns and are receiving treatment. We will get more clarity in the next one or two hours,' he added. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the explosion and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. In a social media post on X, the Prime Minister's Office wrote, 'Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a factory in Sangareddy, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.' Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also expressed his condolences over the deaths in the explosion. 'The news of the explosion at the chemical factory in Telangana is extremely tragic and concerning. My heartfelt condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones in this incident. I hope for the speedy recovery of all those injured,' Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X. 'The state government and administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations. Efforts are ongoing to provide every possible assistance to the affected people. In this difficult time, we stand with the affected families in every way,' he added. (ANI)
