Rocking on: How GemLife's musical residents are making life sing

The Age5 days ago
When you think about retirement, what comes to mind? For GemLife Gold Coast resident Guy Scruton, it's starting a three-piece rock band dubbed The Gemtones. The best part? He doesn't have to imagine it – he's already living it.
'The Gemtones get together every Wednesday afternoon, but these days we're also meeting on weekends, so the community can come down and enjoy their time with us,' explains Scruton, who performs out of his garage alongside bandmates Trevor Rix and Mark Parry.
Although he dabbled in music all his life, it wasn't until Scruton and his wife Cathy moved to GemLife Gold Coast, a luxury over-50s resort in Pimpama, mid-last year that he picked up the keyboard and saxophone once more.
When Scruton discovered that Rix, his next-door neighbour, sang and played guitar, and that Parry, who lives across the street, was also learning guitar, sparks began to fly.
'Rehearsing became a feature in the street,' Scruton says. 'People within earshot would come and sit down with their eskies, then people from other areas got wind of it and started coming too. We've now performed for larger celebrations like Christmas, New Year's Eve, Australia Day, Melbourne Cup and Easter.'
While The Gemtones may have found fame as a garage band, the trio (who cover hits from the 1950s through to the 2000s), will soon take centre stage at GemLife Gold Coast's new multimillion-dollar Country Club.
'We'll start doing rehearsals there and once a month we'll rock on in the club, so everyone gets to dance and have a good night,' Scruton says, adding that the band has become quite the social movement.
'Creating new friendships has been a delight,' he says. 'We all have different stories and interests and come from different walks of life, but we're all like-minded people.'

Taron Egerton laughs off 'strange' Wolverine rumours

Taron Egerton says rumours linking him to the role of Wolverine are "strange" and feel "like a joke". The Kingsman: The Secret Service star is regularly hit by gossip suggesting he could be in line to take over the X-Men character from Hugh Jackman - who has played Wolverine onscreen in various movies since 2000 - but Taron is adamant the speculation isn't based on anything solid and it resurfaces every time he strips off in a film. He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I feel like it happens every time I take my shirt off in a film. The truth of the matter is I don't look like that when I take my shirt off, unless it's in a film where the part needs me to look that way. "The Wolverine thing is almost like a joke at this point. Every time I have a project come out, there's a moment where people talk about it, and I'm the one person who is not qualified to talk about it. "It's quite strange, but it's flattering. It's always lovely to think that anybody would want you to play a beloved role, but I also think no one is ever going to accept anyone in that role other than Hugh Jackman. He's completely synonymous with it." In the interview, Taron also talked about his role in hit Netflix movie Carry-On, in which he played an airport Transportation Security Administration worker caught up in a blackmail plot on Christmas Eve, and insisted there are currently no plans for a sequel. He said: "Carry-On 2 is really hard. It's a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. "It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component. All of that is quite hard to achieve in a sequel without it feeling contrived and to the point of defying credulity. "So I have not heard anything, but who knows, stranger things have happened." Taron also insisted the role hasn't made travelling through airports more difficult for him. He said: "I took a photo with a TSA agent at the Dallas airport a couple days ago when I was traveling here to New York, and that was a really nice bit of symmetry. "But it's not like it's made travel impossible or anything. Generally, I get by pretty unnoticed."

Retired jockey Damien Oliver lists humble Surf Coast beach shack

Champion jockey Damien Oliver is selling his Jan Juc holiday home of 25 years on a prime beachfront strip overlooking popular surf breaks. The three-time Melbourne Cup winner has for decades escaped to the humble, three-bedroom holiday shack to pursue his passion for surfing. He described the sport as the 'perfect outlet' during his racing career, when he was often spotted catching waves at nearby Bird Rock and Bells Beach. Perth-born Oliver retired from the track in 2023 as Australia's most decorated jockey after notching up almost 3200 winners, including a record 129 group one races. He and his family have long been based in Port Melbourne, where a pool and sauna are among the features of their primary bayside home. There's no such luxuries at the modest Surf Coast beach house, which is listed for sale in original condition. An outdoor toilet and laundry can still be found in a fibro outbuilding, though an indoor bathroom is also installed. It's the land value of the prized clifftop position that underpins the 587sq m property's $1.75m price tag. The house is listed for private sale through My Agent Real Estate in Port Melbourne, which is marketing it as a renovation or knockdown rebuild prospect. Oliver's wife Trish, who is handling the sale, said he had always loved the no fuss, humble beach shack but had decided to move it on now he was retired. 'It's a fantastic opportunity to buy into a tightly held street in Jan Juc,' Mrs Oliver said. 'Ocean Blvd speaks for itself in terms of opportunity for sea views and proximity to the spectacular Surf Coast.' New owners have potential to unlock ocean views by adding a second storey, while making the most of the 16.6m frontage. The existing house has a beachy vibe, with polished timber floorboards in the open-plan living area and bedrooms and a retro kitchen. A wide front veranda overlooks crown land across the road where the scenic Surf Coast clifftop walking trail runs past. Jan Juc beach, Bird Rock and Steps surf breaks are within walking distance, as well as Jan Juc village and The Beach Hotel.
