Accused killer of 13-year-old Florida girl pleads guilty to 2024 murder
Previously, Sterns pleaded not guilty to the 2024 death of his ex-girlfriend's daughter and was in an Osceola County court room for a hearing at around 1:30 p.m. local time.
He was to initially go on trial Tuesday.
The change in his plea means Sterns, 38, could potentially avoid the death penalty but only if a judge accepts the plea deal.
Sterns had pleaded innocent to first-degree murder and the some 60 cases of sex-abuse charges. However, both trials were to be separately held.
On Monday, he pleaded guilty to both the murder and sex-abuse charges.
Soto disappeared the day after her 13th birthday.
It was previously believed that Sterns dropped off Soto at Hunter's Creek Middle School in Orlando around 8:30 a.m. that morning. But the investigation revealed she never arrived, which was backed up by surveillance footage.
At Monday's hearing, the teen's grandmother, cousin and aunts spoke to the court.
According to investigators, images depicting him raping the teen were uncovered on his phone and Google Drive.
Her body was found last year in Osceola County at the end of February.
Police officials in Kissimmee believe Sterns killed the girl before discarding her body along a road.
Sterns was named early as "prime suspect" in the murder and later arrested on charges of sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse materials.

File Photo by Annabelle Gordon/UPI. | License Photo Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The United States has blacklisted three high-ranking members and an associated rapper of the notorious Cartel del Noreste, as the Trump administration targets drug trafficking organizations amid it immigration crackdown. The Treasury announced the sanctions Wednesday against Abdon Federico Rodriguez Garcia, 41, CDN's second-in-command; Antonio Romero Sanchez, 41, a high-ranking CDN member; Francisco Daniel Esqueda Nieto, 30, CDN's tactical operations leaded in Nuevo Laredo; and Ricardo Hernandez Medrano, 34, a Mexican rapper known by his stage names El Makabelico or Comando Exclusivo. According to the Treasury, the four individuals are "key" enablers of the CDN's "campaign of violence and narco-terrorism." While the three members blacklisted are accused of directly leading or participating in the gang's drug trafficking and other operations, Medrano is being targeted on accusations that his concerts and events are used to launder money for the gang, with 50% of his royalties from streaming platforms allegedly being directed to CDN. He had millions of followers on YouTube, but his account now seems to have been removed. UPI has contacted YouTube for comment. "CDN depends on these alternative revenue streams and money laundering methods to boost their criminal enterprise, diversifying their income beyond criminal activity like drug trafficking, human smuggling and extortion," the Treasury said in a release. Formerly known as Los Zetas, CDN is a notorious criminal organization based in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. Along with drugs, CDN has been connected to human and arms trafficking as well as money laundering and vehicle and oil theft. CDN and seven other cartels were designated foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S. State Department in February at the direction of President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order targeting the criminal organizations on his first day in office. Trump campaigned on securing the border from both criminal cartels and irregular migration, often through the use of incendiary rhetoric and misinformation. In May, the Treasury sanctioned two high-ranking members of the gang, including a weapons procurer. "These cartels poison Americans with fentanyl and conduct human smuggling operations along our southwest border," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday in a statement. "Treasury, in close coordination with our law enforcement partners, is committed to a full-frontal assault on the cartels, targeting the leadership and revenue streams that enable their horrific crimes."

Texas AG to investigate O'Rourke-linked group amid map row

File Photo by Kevin Dietsch/UPI | License Photo Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday launched an investigation into potential Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke over allegations that he "bribed" Democratic state lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State to prevent Republicans from passing GOP-favorable congressional maps that critics say strip power from voters of color. Paxton announced the investigation amid a deepening row between the state's Democrats and Republicans. The state's minority Democrats fled Texas over the weekend to deny Republicans the quorum needed to certify the controversial maps. The state's Republican leadership has responded with threats of arrest and to vacate their congressional seats if they don't return by Friday, as well as investigations into anyone who solicits funds to support their effort. Paxton said Wednesday that he is investigating the O'Rourke-led Powered by People, which is reportedly covering the costs of Texas Democrats who fled the state. He also said the Powered by People group may have violated bribery laws and state laws, such as those governing campaign or officeholder contributions and expenditures, coercion of a public servant and abuse of office. "Any Democrat coward breaking the law by taking a Beto Bribe will be held accountable," Paxton said in a statement announcing the investigation. "These jet-setting runaways have already lost public trust by abandoning our state, and Texans deserve to know if they received illegal bribes to do it." The new maps, if certified, are expected to give Republicans five additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of next year's midterm elections. Critics and Democrats argue that the maps draw lines that dilute the voting power of Latino and Black people, while serving as a power grab by President Donald Trump through rigging the GOP representation in the House. Democrats have widely supported their Texan colleagues' actions to prevent quorum. Republicans have viewed the move as a shirking from their responsibilities. O'Rourke has been traveling throughout several swing states, including Missouri, Wisconsin, Indianapolis, Nebraska and others, trying to generate grassroots support for the Texas Democrats. In response to the investigation, O'Rourke accused Paxton of hypocrisy. "The guy impeached for bribery is going after the folks trying to stop the theft of five congressional seats," he said on X. Paxton was impeached by the state House but was acquitted of all corruption charges by the Senate. The Republican attorney general has vowed that he will seek "aggressive legal action" against any Democrat who is not present at the House on Friday, while Abbott has called for their arrests.

File Photo by Bonnie Cash/UPI | License Photo Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Three people were arrested after a major drug bust by U.S. authorities on Wednesday off Puerto Rico turned up some 62 large bales filled with thousand of pounds of cocaine worth roughly $30 million. Officials at U.S. Custom and Border Protection said in a statement its Air and Marine Operations, working with the Joint Forces for Rapid Action unit of Puerto Rico's police agency, nabbed a yola-type vessel with three non-U.S. citizens. The boat carried the 62 bales of cocaine on its way to Cabo Rojo to the island's the southwest, officials said. The three unidentified individuals are from Colombia and Panama, according to U.S. officials. On Wednesday, AMO's Caribbean Air and Marine Operations detected a vessel navigating north in the morning hours. The team intercepted the alleged trafficking boat roughly 2 nautical miles from the coast of Cabo Rojo, where U.S. agents seized 60 "extra-large" and 2 "large" bales filled with what was confirmed to be cocaine. Agents arrested one Panamanian and 2 Colombian nationals who lacked proper documentation to either be in or enter U.S. territory or waters. CBP did not state if the detainees were male or female. The 60 bales contained more than 3,900 pounds of cocaine with its estimated street value at approximately $30.4 million, officials said. Wednesday's sea-faring cocaine bust off Puerto Rico, while large, was smaller by comparison to the 37,000 pounds worth around $275 million grabbed in February by the U.S. Coast Guard near San Diego. In June, CBP fell upon 18 pounds of cocaine valued over $4 million in a similar incident when agents seized a vessel near Rincon.
