Chennai's urban village fest Sempozhil blends folk art, food, and native cattle displays
Last year, Sempulam was held on a much-larger scale as a three-day event with artiste performances, native food, and more. 'We wanted to organise a rural fest celebrating organic farming, sustainable living and showcasing native livestock as a mark of gratitude to people for supporting the campaign,' says Himakiran, managing trustee at Thondaimandalam Foundation.
This year, the festival returns for four days as Sempozil (meaning a flourishing grove in red soil, in tamil) in a far larger format. 'This year, we have content in the six themes of food, clothing, shelter, art, literature, and wellness. and will be presented as workshops, exhibits, and performances. The content is also tied to the ainthinais (five landscapes),' says Himakiran, who is also the executive producer of Sempozhil. 'Sempulam means 'fertile lands'. We wanted to create a larger canvas for the festival and hence changed the name to Sempozhil. 'Sem' is from semmai which means fertile, and 'pozhi'l means a garden, forest, or a large landscape,' he explains.
Aimed at spotlighting the various facets of Tamil heritage, Sempozhil will have daily performances by rural troupes from across Tamil Nadu including Therukoothu, Paraiattam, Oyilattam, Bommalattam, among others; a space dedicated to native seeds, heritage crops; thematic installations; play areas for children; among other features. The highlight, however, is the cattle expo that will bring together over 40 native animal breeds of Jallikattu bulls, sheep, goats, dogs, horses, and poultry.
For the event, Himakiran says the team has collaborated with Alliance Francaise of Madras for the workshops, Tamil Nadu Iyarkai Uzhavar Kootiyakkam for the food and seed displays, Anubavi for curating the arts performances, exhibits and workshops. First-time art forms at Sempozhil include Thiruvannamalai periyamelam, dabbakuthu, silambattam, to name a few. 'Over 1,000 farmers and 150 performing artistes, primarily from rural and tribal belts, are participating in the show,' he says, adding that 3,000+ school children will also be attending Sempozhil as part of organised educational and experiential tours.
Curating an event at such a scale has its own share of challenges. 'Someone who loves the arts might not necessarily like livestock. Someone who likes farming might not be interested in exhibits. These are perceptions and pre-conceived notions that are the hardest to deal with. The urban vs. rural divide is artificial and we truly believe that there is a child in every adult and a villager in every urbanite,' says Himakiran.
For someone attending the event for the first time, what does the team recommend they do? Himakiran says learning about seed diversity, and our livestock should be on their agenda, including savouring traditional millet and rice-based organic food. 'You could attend one of the many workshops happening as a run up to the event until August 22, and also witness one of the four livestock shows that will make people be amazed by the hard work needed in rearing livestock,' he says. A fashion show featuring 2,000 years of Tamil apparel will also be held and it will feature contemporary Madras streetwear.

War 2 (Hindi) Day 5 India Box Office: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer falls flat on 1st Monday; Adds mere Rs 6.50 crore
War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, dropped big on its first Monday at the Indian box office for the Hindi version. After packing an underwhelming Rs 125 crore Hindi net India weekend, there was some hope that the movie would consolidate on 1st Monday and then have a respectable run from there. But that has not happened as the movie is down, over 85 percent from Independence Day Friday. With Rs 6.50 crore on Monday, the lifetime prospects don't look good for the actioner. War 2 Nets Only Rs 6.50 Crore For The Hindi Version In India On 1st Monday War 2 's steep drop on Monday to Rs 6.50 crore from its first Friday number of Rs 45 crore is even bigger than Adipurush, and that's not good company to be with. Adipurush netted Rs 7.50 crore in Hindi on its 1st Monday, the fourth day of its run. With a trend like this, War 2 may, at best, get to Rs 175 crore net in its lifetime for the Hindi version. The Day Wise Hindi Net Collection Of War 2 In India Is As Under War 2 Crashes In Tamil And Telugu The collections of War 2 for the other versions isn't quite appealing either. The movie has crashed in Tamil and Telugu, to a point of no return. A lifetime India net of Rs 225 crore is what the movie looks to do at this point, and it won't be surprising, even if it fails to manage this number. War, directed by Siddharth Anand, back in 2019, netted slightly above Rs 300 crore and the costs on that movie were practically half of what they are in this movie. For War 2 to not even net 75 percent of what War managed with a double budget, will be seen as very disappointing.

Coolie box office collection day 5: Rajinikanth film shows dip but crosses ₹200 crore mark
Coolie box office collection day 5: Lokesh Kanagaraj's ensemble film Coolie, headlined by Rajinikanth, released in theatres on 14 August. Despite the clash with War 2 and registering a massive dip on Monday, the film has crossed the ₹200 crore mark in India in five days after making ₹400 crore worldwide in its opening weekend. Coolie box office collection day 5: Rajinikanth plays Deva in the Lokesh Kanagaraj film. Coolie box office collection According to Sacnilk, Coolie registered an opening of ₹65 crore on its opening day, with a 15% dip on Friday, bringing in ₹54.75 crore net in India. With a 27% dip on Saturday, the film made ₹39.5 crore, and with a further 10% dip on Sunday, it made ₹35.25 crore. Now, on its first Monday, Coolie made ₹9.36 crore net in India, taking its total collection to ₹203.86 crore net. Despite it being a weekday, the film registered a 30% occupancy for the Tamil version and 21% for the Telugu version. It's competitor War 2 earned ₹7.52 crore on Monday, with a total collection of ₹182.27 crore. While the opening collections were largely dependent on the hype of this being Lokesh's first film with Rajinikanth, apart from the advantage of the long Independence Day weekend, it remains to be seen if the film will sustain its momentum, given the mixed reviews it received. The film is close to beating the lifetime collection of Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan ( ₹253 crore) and Darbar ( ₹247 crore). Jailer, with its ₹604 crore collection, seems ambitious. About Coolie Coolie is a standalone film by Lokesh and not a part of his cinematic universe with the films Kaithi, Vikram and Leo. Coolie tells the story of Deva (Rajinikanth), who looks for answers after the death of his friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj). Nagarjuna and Soubin Shahir star in the film as the antagonists Simon and Dayal. Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Upendra and Aamir Khan also star in the film.
