The Mets took their time, too. Buck Showalter was fired on Oct. 1, 2023. It was believed they had one solid target in mind as his replacement in Brewers manager Craig Counsell, but Counsell wouldn't be available for exactly another month. The wait seemed like only a wink-wink formality. He and David Stearns had worked together for years in Milwaukee.
So on the 35th day — when Counsell decided to stay close to his Midwestern roots and sign a $40 million deal with the Cubs that obliterated what Stearns and Steve Cohen were expecting to pay for a manager — the Mets pivoted. And were ready. They were already comfortable enough to make Carlos Mendoza and his lifetime 0-0 record as a manager a viable Plan B.

On the 36th day, Mendoza became the manager. It's difficult to find anyone who will tell you today that was anything but an inspired choice.
There is a lesson in that as we watch the Knicks take their time identifying and hiring Tom Thibodeau's successor as head coach. Thursday will only be their 10th day without a coach, and it is starting to look like the Mets' 35-day vigil is a likely model for how this might all shake out.

3-star edge rusher flips commitment to Purdue football from another Midwest school
Purdue football added to its 2026 recruiting class Thursday by taking an edge rusher away from another Midwestern program. Max Carmicle of Hillcrest High School in suburban Chicago flipped his commitment to the Boilermakers. The 6-foot-7, 240-pound defensive end had been committed to Northern Illinois since January. The three-star recruit, ranked No. 991 in On3's industry rankings and No. 86 among edge rushers, took an official visit to Purdue last week. Interest in Carmicle had spread recently. He reportedly picked up offers from Kentucky and Michigan State in May. Carmicle is the 12th known commitment in the 2026 class and the fifth on defense. He is the first commitment on the defensive front, as the first four defensive commitments came in the back seven. Mets ace Kodai Senga headed to IL with hamstring strain
New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga was throwing a gem Thursday against the Washington Nationals before he went down with an injury away from the mound. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after the Mets' 4-3 victory that Senga will go on the IL and undergo an MRI on Friday. Senga strained his right hamstring while covering first base for a putout in the top of the sixth inning. The right-hander had to jump to bring down a throw from first baseman Pete Alonso. Senga made the catch and reached back with his right toe to touch the bag for the out, but then he grabbed at the back of his right leg. Mendoza informed reporters that Senga told him he felt something on the step before he leapt for Alonso's throw to first. The injury interrupted the 5 2/3 scoreless innings Senga had spun. He had conceded only one hit and one walk on the afternoon. Washington staged a ninth-inning comeback yet fell one run short. New York prevailed, but at a cost. Senga, 32, entered Thursday with a 1.59 ERA and a 2.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his first 12 starts this season. His record improved to 7-3 despite his midgame exit. The international standout also spent time on the IL last season. Senga missed most of 2024 due to a shoulder capsule strain and a calf injury. Senga's MRI on Friday will determine the severity of his hamstring strain and, likely, his recovery timeline. The Mets have the best record in baseball. With Thursday's win over the Nationals, they moved to 45-24.
