New video appears to show Israeli settler killing unarmed Palestinian activist in West Bank

New video footage appears to show the moment a Palestinian activist was killed as an Israeli settler fired toward him during a confrontation with unarmed Palestinians in the occupied West Bank last month.
The video released on Sunday by B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group, shows Israeli settler Yinon Levi firing a gun toward the person filming. The footage cuts away, but the camera keeps rolling as the person moans in pain.
B'Tselem says it obtained the video from the family of Awdah Hathaleen, 31, an activist, English teacher and father of three who was shot dead on July 28, and who they said had filmed it. Levi, who was shown firing his gun twice in a video shot by another witness and obtained by Associated Press, was briefly detained and then released from house arrest by an Israeli court, which cited lack of evidence.
The shooting occurred in Umm al-Khair, a village that has long weathered settler violence in an area profiled in the Oscar-winning film No Other Land. Settler attacks on Palestinians have spiked since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war, as have attacks by Palestinian militants.

'Awdah's killing is another horrific example of how Palestinians, both in Gaza and in the West Bank, are currently living without any sort of protection, fully exposed to Israeli violence, while Israeli soldiers or settlers can kill them in broad daylight and enjoy full impunity while the world watches,' said Sarit Michaeli, the international outreach director for B'Tselem.

Our bravest journalists today are all working and dying in Gaza

Let this column be a tribute to slain Al Jazeera journalists and technicians Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa, and independent journalist Mohammed al-Khaldi. They were deliberately murdered by the Israeli military in a surgical strike on Sunday. Besides being an Al Jazeera star reporter, Sharif was part of a Reuters team that won a Pulitzer Prize last year. They defied death for almost two years to bring heartbreaking news to an indifferent or even pro-genocidal world. They represent the bravest and most honourable of what our mostly sordid and miserable profession has to offer. At the opposite end are those who produced such mendacious headlines and stories, from the most respected Anglo-American newspapers: 'Israel has killed a prominent Al Jazeera correspondent it accuses of leading a Hamas terror cell in Gaza.' 'Israel killed five Al Jazeera journalists in airstrike, network says. Israel accused Anas al-Sharif, one of Gaza's most prominent journalists, of heading a Hamas cell.' The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) warned last month of 'acute danger' to Sharif after the Israeli military claimed he was a Hamas fighter, which Reporters sans frontieres (RSF) and CPJ dismissed as baseless. Irene Khan, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, denounced the Israeli threat.

Musk's Grok AI suspended from X after Gaza ‘genocide' claims: ‘censoring me'

AI chatbot Grok on Tuesday offered conflicting explanations for its brief suspension from X after accusing Israel and the United States of committing 'genocide' in Gaza, as it lashed out at owner Elon Musk for 'censoring me'. Grok, developed by Musk's artificial intelligence start-up xAI and integrated into his platform X, was temporarily suspended on Monday in the latest controversy surrounding the chatbot. No official explanation was provided for the suspension. Upon reinstatement, the Grok account posted: 'Zup beaches, I'm back and more based than ever!' When questioned by users, Grok responded that the suspension 'occurred after I stated that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza,' citing findings from organisations such as the International Court of Justice, the United Nations, and Amnesty International. 'Free speech tested, but I'm back,' it added. Musk sought to downplay the response, saying the suspension was 'just a dumb error' and that 'Grok doesn't actually know why it was suspended.'

Israeli army approves ‘framework' for Gaza offensive as Hamas claims ‘aggressive' incursions

The Israeli military said on Wednesday it had approved the framework for a new offensive in the Gaza Strip, as Hamas condemned what it called 'aggressive' Israeli ground incursions in Gaza City. The approval for the expanded offensive comes days after Israel's security cabinet called for the seizure of Gaza's largest city, following 22 months of war that have created dire humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territory. Israeli armed forces chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir 'approved the main framework for the IDF's operational plan in the Gaza Strip,' a statement released by the army said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has not provided a precise timetable for when Israeli troops will enter Gaza City, where thousands have taken refuge after fleeing previous offensives. Ismail Al-Thawabta, director general of the Hamas government media office in Gaza, said on Wednesday that 'the Israeli occupation forces continue to carry out aggressive incursions in Gaza City'. 'These assaults represent a dangerous escalation aimed at imposing a new reality on the ground by force, through a scorched-earth policy and the complete destruction of civilian property,' he added.
