Red Sox Get First Base Reinforcement With Romy González Reinstated
Red Sox Get First Base Reinforcement With Romy González Reinstated originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It has been a disastrous season for the Boston Red Sox's first basemen.
The Opening Day starter, Triston Casas, is out for the year after undergoing knee surgery. Third baseman turned designated hitter Rafael Devers does not want to fill the void. These circumstances have forced the Red Sox to play around with rookie Kristian Campbell at the three as they continue to search for answers.

Fortunately, help is on the way. Boston's official X account recently posted this update:
González has only played in 192 games over his five-year MLB career with the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox, but has performed admirably in a fill-in role. The 28-year-old has a .308 batting average, a .785 OPS, a 120 OPS+, and three stolen bases over 17 games this season.

Hopefully, for Boston, he can maintain those numbers upon returning from a quad contusion. Campbell is young enough and athletic enough to mold his defensive mind into a first baseman. However, he is a natural second baseman and, in an ideal world, can remain there.

One potential option for the Red Sox is a platoon. Despite hitting from the right side, González has much better numbers against righties than lefties. He is batting .333 with a .828 OPS versus a .263 batting average and .707 OPS facing southpaws.
Abraham Toro, a switch-hitter, is also better against right-handed pitching, but his plate versatility could potentially ease González's workload.
Casas is still the future of the position in Boston, and it feels unlikely that one player replicates his value. However, at 29-32 and 8.5 games back of the first-place New York Yankees, the Red Sox may feel the need to hit the trade market for an immediate upgrade.

Red Sox 3B Alex Bregman starts running program, still far from returning from quad strain
NEW YORK (AP) — Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Alex Bregman felt good after starting a running program at Fenway Park but is still far from returning from a strained right quadriceps. 'The progression is going well,' Cora said before the Red Sox continued their series against the New York Yankees. 'Let's see how he feels tomorrow and then we'll go from there, and obviously we're still far away from him starting the baseball progression.' Bregman has been out since May 23 with a significant strain, similar to his left quad strain that cost him 58 games for the Houston Astros in 2021. Bregman started the running program Thursday. He will also have Sunday off before resuming running later next week. Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent to a $120 million, three-year deal during the offseason, Bregman was hitting .299 and 11 homers and 35 RBIs. Marcelo Mayer, who hit his first career homer in Friday's 9-6 loss, has made 10 starts at third base but was not in the lineup against left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and will likely be out of the lineup against southpaw Carlos Rodón on Sunday. The Red Sox entered Saturday with nine losses in 13 games since Bregman was injured. Crawford likely to throw bullpen session next week Cora also said Kutter Crawford is likely to throw a bullpen session at the end of next week as he tries to prepare for a minor league rehabilitation assignment. On Friday, Cora said Crawford was likely to throw a bullpen session this weekend. Crawford hasn't pitched in a game this year because of patellar tendinitis in his right knee. Cora had said Monday that the 29-year-old right-hander would start a rehab assignment this week, then said the following day that Crawford felt wrist pain. He said Friday that Crawford does not have any structural damage. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees' Anthony Volpe misses second game this season after being hit in the left elbow
NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Volpe was not in the New York Yankees' lineup Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, a day after getting hit in the left elbow by Walker Buehler's pitch. The durable shortstop missed just his second game of the season. 'Just another day,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'I actually put him in the lineup overnight that I sent out and had him in there up until a couple of hours ago when he got here. Strength, everything's good. He's got a pretty good size swelling in there still. 'Just kind of talking with the trainers, they're like, I think it would do him well to try and get one more day and just get a lot of treatment in there and hopefully he'll be back in there tomorrow." Volpe followed Jazz Chisholm Jr's three-run homer with his own two-run shot in a five-run first inning during New York's 9-6 victory on Friday. In the second inning, Volpe batted with the bases loaded was hit on the left elbow by Buehler's 88.2 mph changeup. He exited starting the fourth inning when the elbow swelled after he took off his brace and compression sleeve. Volpe had an X-ray at Yankee Stadium that was negative and went for a CT scan at New York-Presbyterian/ Columbia University Irving Medical Center that also didn't show any break. 'It's painful and stiff,' Volpe said Friday night. 'Knowing that it's structurally sound and you've got to just get the swelling out, definitely optimistic.' Volpe winced in pain but remained in the game after he was hit by the pitch, which forced in a run. The 24-year-old Gold Glove winner played the field in the third inning, then was replaced by Oswald Peraza at the start of the fourth. Volpe is batting .241 with eight homers and 37 RBIs and 11 of his last 19 hits are for extra bases. Volpe has played in 61 of 62 games, skipping May 4 game against Tampa Bay, a day after hurting his left shoulder on a dive trying to get to a grounder. ___

Titans Trade Pitch Uses Treylon Burks to Land Disgruntled All-Pro WR
Titans Trade Pitch Uses Treylon Burks to Land Disgruntled All-Pro WR originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tennessee Titans have spent the entire offseason building around quarterback Cam Ward, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. After a three-win campaign in 2024, new general manager Mike Borgonzi put in the work to ease Ward's transition to the professional level. Advertisement This included the additions of veteran wideouts Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson in free agency, as well as the selections of wide receivers Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor and tight end Gunnar Helm in the draft. While these players will supplement returners Calvin Ridley and Chig Okonkwo, the Titans could still benefit from having a true No. 1 wide receiver on the roster. Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin (17).Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Last season, Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin had a career year with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, the team refuses to give him an extension this offseason, and trade rumors have swirled around the 2024 Second-Team All-Pro. Advertisement That could potentially work to the Titans' benefit, as Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox drafted a trade proposal in which McLaurin lands in Tennessee. In return, the Titans would send a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 fifth-round pick, and former first-round wide receiver Treylon Burks, who has been a bust through three NFL seasons. "McLaurin has already proven his worth as an aid to a young quarterback. That should interest the Tennessee Titans, who just used the No. 1 overall pick on Miami quarterback Cam Ward," Knox wrote. "A trio of Calvin Ridley, Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett is respectable, but Tennessee doesn't have a true No. 1 receiver on its roster." Burks is yet to eclipse 700 career receiving yards through his first three seasons, and he has only played in 27 games due to injury. Parting with him and two mid-round picks would be a no-brainer for the Titans, who have plenty of young talent on the roster to develop already. Ward will need all the help that he can get during his rookie season and beyond, and McLaurin helped Daniels win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2024. McLaurin could be the missing piece for head coach Brian Callahan's offense.
