Kelantan Sees Over Threefold Rise In HFMD Cases
KOTA BHARU, May 16 (Bernama) -- Kelantan has recorded a sharp rise in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, with 8,801 infections reported as of the 19th Epidemiological Week this year, compared to 2,348 cases during the same period last year.
State Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the figure marks more than a threefold increase and reflects a similar trend to that seen in 2022.
'Of the total, 12 outbreaks remain active, namely four in Pasir Puteh, four in Kuala Krai and one each in Pasir Mas, Machang, Gua Musang and Kota Bharu.
'All districts recorded an increase in cases, with Kota Bharu topping the list at 3,060 cases, while other districts reported between 400 and 850 cases,' he told Bernama today.
Dr Zaini said that the weekly trend remains high, with an average of 895 cases reported each week.
He added that most cases involve children aged six and below, with mild symptoms such as fever and rashes on the hands, feet, mouth and tongue.
'The department advises parents and guardians to practise preventive measures such as washing hands before meals and after using the toilet, and to regularly clean toys, bathrooms and frequently touched items.
'Childcare centre operators are also encouraged to conduct health screenings at the entrance, carry out regular sanitisation, and avoid sharing personal items among children,' he said.

In emergencies such as a heart attack, the company said customers will be taken directly to the hospital's emergency department, with all co-payment and deductible charges fully waived, allowing them to receive full coverage without any additional costs. Meanwhile, GETB chief executive officer Shahrul Azlan Shahriman said the company believed that a protection plan should be simple, transparent and empathetic, which was the primary goal of launching the i-Medi Evolusi Rider. 'We want customers to feel confident about seeking early treatment before a condition becomes more serious and requires hospitalisation,' he said.

He said the figure reflects persistently low awareness of organ donation in the state, particularly among rural communities and younger demographics. 'Since the organ donation pledge programme began in 1997, Kelantan has recorded only eight actual donors,' Bernama reported him as saying at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital today. Zaini stressed the urgent need to improve both pledge registration and actual donation rates. 'Organ demand remains high, especially for kidneys and corneas, as well as hearts and livers. One donor can save up to four lives,' he said. Zaini said overcoming cultural and religious misconceptions required a coordinated effort involving medical professionals, authorities and religious scholars. 'Although many support the idea in principle, barriers such as limited understanding, myth, family hesitation and concerns over funeral delays or respecting the deceased remain widespread,' he said. According to the National Transplant Resource Centre, Kuala Lumpur currently has the highest pledge rate at 2.32%.
