Brewers' Misiorowski continues history-making start to his career by outperforming Pirates' Skenes
Associated Press
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski made an extra effort to avoid getting caught up in all the hype surrounding the rookie flamethrower's highly anticipated matchup with Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes.
'It was just one of those things that you wanted to try and calm yourself down as much as possible and stay off the Internet because I feel like everything I swiped was me and Skenes, me and Skenes, me and Skenes,' Misiorowski said after the Brewers' 4-2 victory over the Pirates on Wednesday. 'I had to mute it, turn it off.'
The way he's pitching, Misiorowski better get accustomed to the extra attention.
After throwing five shutout innings to outperform the 2024 NL rookie of the year, Misiorowski owns a 3-0 record and 1.13 earned run average. The three hits Misiorowski has allowed thus far is the fewest by any major league pitcher through his first three career starts with a minimum of 16 innings pitched since at least 1901, according to Sportradar.
Plenty of history was made Wednesday.
According to Sportradar, Misiorowski averaged 99.5 mph and Skenes averaged 98.5 on their fastballs. That represented the highest combined fastball velocity by two starting pitchers in the same game since at least 2009.
Misiorowski reached at least 100 mph on 19 of his 74 pitches — reaching a career-best peak of 102.4 — and Skenes got to 100 mph once out of 78 pitches. Since at least 2009, this marked the most combined 100-mph pitches by opposing starters for any game in which both reached that threshold at least once.
'I've watched plenty of his games,' Misiorowski said of Skenes. 'It's awesome to face a guy like that and really compare yourself to some of the best.'
The hoopla surrounding this matchup of 23-year-olds didn't seem to bother Misiorowski, who struck out eight while allowing two hits and two walks. That was apparent well before the game.
'We were sitting over here laughing, joking,' said Brewers catcher Eric Haase, whose locker is just around the corner from Misiorowski's. 'Didn't seem it was affecting him at all.'
The matchup drew a season-best sellout crowd of 42,774 for a weekday afternoon game. Most wanted to see what Misiorowski did next after allowing a total of one hit in his first two outings.
His torrid start could force Misiorowski to deal with the level of attention Skenes has received ever since arriving in the big leagues as a No. 1 overall draft pick who led LSU to a 2023 College World Series title.
Skenes has outperformed those considerable expectations. He was named the NL rookie of the year and finished third in the Cy Young Award voting last season.
What advice would Skenes give Misiorowski about how to handle the scrutiny that could accompany an emergence to stardom?
'You've got to protect yourself, for lack of a better term, obviously with the media, but I assume if he goes and walks around Milwaukee now there's going to be more people that recognize him and all that," said Skenes, who met Misiorowski for the first time on Monday. "If he does what he's supposed to do and everybody thinks he can do, that's not going away any time soon. Get used to it and find ways to find peace and that kind of thing.'
Skenes (4-7) lasted just four innings Wednesday while striking out four and allowing four runs, four hits and two walks. This was only the third time in 40 career starts that Skenes has given up as many as four runs.
Milwaukee did all its damage during a second inning in which Skenes faced nine batters, threw 37 pitches and allowed four runs. Never before had Skenes faced that many hitters, thrown that many pitches or yielded that many runs in a single inning.
After Milwaukee loaded the bases on a walk and two singles to start the second, Isaac Collins scored from third as Joey Ortiz grounded out to Skenes on an 0-2 pitch. Haase then hit a 1-2 pitch for a bloop RBI double that bounced in front of center fielder Oneil Cruz's diving attempt. Christian Yelich capped the rally with an RBI single to left on a 1-2 offering.
Skenes allowed only one other base runner in his other three innings while matching the second-shortest stint of his career. His shortest appearance came in his final start last year, when he worked just two innings by design and didn't allow a base runner in a 9-4 victory over the New York Yankees.
The performance raised Skenes' career ERA from 1.91 to 2.03.
'They did a good job of getting to some pitches," Skenes said. "I wasn't unhappy with the execution of all of those, there are probably a couple that could have been better but they did a good job.'

Celtics' Brad Stevens says Jayson Tatum progressing well, but won't return until 'fully ready'
Associated Press When Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the Celtics' conference semifinals loss the the New York Knicks, everything about Boston's immediate future changed. But what won't change is the Celtics' front office's prudence in making sure he has the space and time to make a full recovery. Boston president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said the All-Star is progressing well following surgery last month. But asked about whether the team had put a potential timeline on Tatum's return, Stevens was definitive that there would be no rushing the star's rehabilitation. 'We don't and we won't,' Stevens said Wednesday night following the first round of the NBA draft. 'We won't put a projected timeline on him for a long, long time. ... It's baby steps right now. He's actually progressed great, but I don't know what that means in regard to projected timelines. But that will be in consultation with him ... and everybody else to make sure when he hits the court he is fully ready, and fully healthy. And that will be the priority." Tatum is expected to miss most if not all of next season. It has already had implications for next season, with the team opting to trade Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday — both key contributors from the 2024 title team — in an effort to get the team's salary under the luxury tax second penalty apron. But Stevens said All-Star Jaylen Brown has already been back to the Celtics' training facility since he had minimally invasive surgery to clean up his right knee. Brown is doing some light ball handling and work around the rim, Stevens said. 'We said be ready for training camp and I think he'll probably be going full well ahead of that," Stevens said. While Stevens said league rules wouldn't allow him to address the pending trades of Porzingis or Holiday, he said anything they do this offseason is with an eye toward regaining flexibility after multiple seasons with a high payroll. 'As far as whatever moves that those are a apart of, they're all separate and hard and things that you're going to have to do your best to make sure you put yourself in the right positions,' Stevens said. 'We knew this was coming. This isn't a huge surprise. ... The biggest thing for us is making sure that we balance that, maximizing what we can with regard to what we bring back so we can continue to build and grow.' ___ AP NBA: recommended

Sabrina Ionescu makes 7 free throws late as Liberty hold off Valkyries 81-78
Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu converted seven free throws in the final two minutes and made a key steal with 26 seconds left, Breanna Stewart had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and the New York Liberty held off the Golden State Valkyries 81-78 on Wednesday night. Ionescu struggled to find her shooting rhythm returning from a neck injury and wound up 1 of 11 for 11 points in her Bay Area homecoming not far from where she grew up in the East Bay suburb of Walnut Creek. She regularly attended Warriors games. Ionescu was 0 for 5 at halftime missing all four of her 3s. She finally connected on her first field goal, a 3-pointer, with 9 minutes left Kate Martin hit a tying 3-pointer with 4:12 remaining and put the Valkyries ahead on a 3 at the 1:59 mark before Ionescu's free throws. Martin's 3 with 12 seconds to go made it a one-point game but Martin and Kayla Thornton missed two late 3s. Stewart scored 21 of her points by halftime and Kennedy Burke added 20 points off the bench. The Liberty (11-3) had lost three out of four after winning their first nine games — including the first two meetings against the expansion Valkyries on May 27 and 29 in Brooklyn. In the first two matchups, Stewart had 51 points on 16-for-26 shooting while converting 18 of 25 free throws, her highest output against any opponent Ne York has faced more than once. Martin finished with 21 points for the Valkyries, who had won two straight and five of six and sold out their eighth straight game at Chase Center, where they are 5-3. Golden State welcomed back center Temi Fagbenle after her absence to play for Great Britain in the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, but she was held out of action to rest after the long travel. Valkyries guard Carla Leite missed the game because of a back injury. Up next The Liberty continue their four-game road trip at Phoenix on Friday night, when the Valkyries will host the Chicago Sky. ___ AP WNBA: recommended

Yankees' Max Fried continues to make case to start the All-Star Game after reaching 10 wins
Associated Press CINCINNATI (AP) — Aaron Boone still has a couple weeks before deciding who will be the American League's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game. It could end up being one of his own players. Max Fried became the first pitcher to reach 10 wins this season in the New York Yankees 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. 'It's down the road. We'll see. He's making the case though,' Boone said about Fried's chances to start the midsummer classic on July 15 in Atlanta. The left-hander allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out seven to improve to 10-2. Fried is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. 'I guess it's cool but we're all here just trying to win games. A lot of it is credit to my teammates. It's nice, but that's more of a team stat than an individual one,' said Fried about reaching double digits in wins. Fried signed a $218 million, eight-year contract with the Yankees last December and has excelled in his first year in pinstripes. He quickly became the staff's ace after Gerrit Cole was lost for the season during spring training due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fried has four games this season where he has gone at least seven innings and not allowed an earned run, tied with Detroit's Tarik Skubal and San Diego's Nick Pivetta for most in the majors. He's second in the majors with a 1.92 ERA and 108 innings. 'Ever since (Cole) went down he's shown us why they paid him what they paid him and why he's the guy we thought he was going to be. Especially someone who I played against for four or five years, to play behind him now is amazing," third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. "I always give him his prop and his flowers, but now he can take them any time he wants.' The 1.92 ERA is the third-lowest by a Yankees' pitcher is his first 17 starts with the club since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913. Fried has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but two starts. He has been even more dominant after Yankees' losses, going 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts. 'I mean 10 wins in half a season, it's not easy to do in any era, especially now. But that's just a testament to how good and efficient he's been,' Boone said. "Whether it's coming off a loss or extending a streak, his consistency has been great. 'I told him again today 'just watching you more and more, I would not have wanted to hit off you.' He's got so many weapons out there and there's just so much movement to all his pitches, he's been terrific.' Fried getting the start in the All-Star Game would carry more importance after he played eight seasons in Atlanta before coming to New York. Fried though knows that decision remains a couple weeks away. 'I've got a handful of starts to go before the break. A lot can happen between now and then. Just focused on the next one in five or six days. I will deal with it when it gets here,' he said. ___ AP MLB: recommended
