PM announces new era with Pak-US ties

ISLAMABAD: America's 249th birthday bash in Islamabad went full throttle on Wednesday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a bold 'new era' in US-Pakistan relations – reminding everyone that Washington was one of Pakistan's earliest backers way back in 1947.
At a glittering Independence Day celebration hosted by the US Embassy – a full month before July 4 – PM Sharif declared that Pakistan and America were stepping into a 'new era' of relations, while tossing sharp jabs at India and tipping his hat to Donald Trump.
'This is a new chapter,' Sharif told a high-profile crowd packed with political bigwigs, top brass, civil society members, and diplomats. 'We're committed to strengthening Pakistan-US relations. Both countries believe in democratic traditions and the supremacy of the constitution.'
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja were amongst the politicians that joined the ceremony.
PM Sharif said that the US was one of the first nations to recognise Pakistan after its 1947 independence. He thanked Washington for decades of development support – but made sure no one forgot the cost Pakistan has paid fighting terror. 'We've lost over 90,000 lives. Our economy's taken a $150 billion hit,' he said. 'Pakistan's sacrifices in counterterrorism are second to none.'
On this occasion, PM Sharif slammed India over the recent four-day war between the two nuclear armed rivals, branding the Pahalgam incident as a false-flag operation and accusing New Delhi of using the tragedy to target civilians. 'We called for an international investigation – India responded by bombing us,' he said, adding that Pakistan had responded in kind by shooting down six Indian aircraft.
Still, the prime minister stressed his desire for regional peace. He credited international efforts, including those by US President Trump, for helping to de-escalate hostilities and secure a ceasefire. 'We appreciate President Trump's efforts in promoting peace and economic cooperation.' Meanwhile, acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker opened with a warm 'As-Salaam-Alaikum' – in Urdu, no less – as she spoke of shared values, mutual respect, and a future rich with potential.

Rahul Gandhi among opposition leaders detained during protest against India election panel

NEW DELHI: Dozens of Indian opposition leaders were detained in New Delhi on Monday as they shouted slogans, jumped barricades and marched to the Election Commission in a rare public protest against what they say are electoral malpractices. The credibility of elections has rarely been questioned in recent decades in the world's most populous democracy. Some analysts say the opposition accusations could damage Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he navigates one of the toughest periods of his 11 years in office. Around 300 opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi of the main opposition Congress party, marched from parliament to the office of the independent election panel but were stopped by police some distance away. The protesters shouted slogans against the panel and Modi's government, saying elections were being 'stolen', and tried to push past barricades before being detained and taken away in buses. 'This fight is not political. This fight is to save the constitution,' Gandhi told reporters. 'We want a clean, pure voters' list.' Gandhi and Congress have alleged that voters' lists in states where the party lost are corrupted, with voters' names deleted or included more than once to rig elections in favour of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. Opposition parties have also criticised the election panel's decision to revise the voters' list in the key northern state of Bihar just before state elections due later this year, saying it aims to disenfranchise large numbers of poor voters. The BJP and the Election Commission have rejected the accusations. 'State of bankruptcy' The commission has said that changes in voters' lists are shared with political parties and all complaints are investigated thoroughly. It has also said that voters' lists need to be revised to remove dead voters or those who have relocated to other parts of the country, among others. Congress and its allies have fared poorly in two state elections that they had expected to win after an impressive show in last year's parliamentary vote, which saw BJP losing its outright majority and remaining in power only with the help of regional parties. Congress has also complained about electronic voting machines and said the counting process is not fair, charges rejected by the election panel. The BJP said opposition parties were trying to create a 'state of anarchy' by sowing seeds of doubt about the electoral process. 'They are in a state of bankruptcy because of their continuous losses,' federal minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters on Monday.

Pakistan, US finalizing trade deal, Kayani tells Bloomberg

Pakistan and US officials are currently in discussions to finalize the finer details of a trade deal that includes investments after securing the lowest tariff among major South Asian nations, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Pakistan's revised tariff rate of 19% is lower than that of several regional economies, including India (25%), Bangladesh (20%), Vietnam (20%), and Sri Lanka (20%). Bilal Azhar Kayani told Bloomberg TV in an interview that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government aims to secure a better tariff on certain exports during the ongoing talks with the US. 'The agreement with more details will be negotiated and discussed in the months ahead,' Kayani said. The South Asian nation reached a trade deal last month with a 19% tariff – significantly lower than the initially proposed 29%, under a sweeping new executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The two nations have seen an improvement in relations recently with Trump also hosting Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir for rare talks at the White House, who is on a second trip to the US within a few months. President Donald Trump, while announcing the trade deal, said the US will work with Pakistan on developing 'their massive oil reserves' and its in the process of choosing an oil company to lead the partnership. The news of the deal came on the same day that Trump launched an unprecedented tariff attack against India - threatening tariffs of 25% - which were later increased to 50% - among the highest on any US trading partner, unless India stops buying Russian oil and weapons. In India, Trump's tariffs spark calls to boycott American goods Trump has threatened higher tariffs on Russia and secondary sanctions on its allies, if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not move to end the war in Ukraine, and threatened to sanction both Russia and its allies. He even expressed dissatisfaction with India's participation in the 'anti-US' BRICS grouping. Their relations worsened as an Indian government source said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit China for the first time in over seven years later this month. During the announcement of oil reserves, Trump added how Pakistan 'may be selling oil to India one day.'
