Leaders condemn assault on train passengers
The leadership of the country, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express in Balochistan and appreciated the security forces for their effective and timely response.
The president lauded the valour of security forces for rescuing the passengers of Jaffar Express and said that attacks on innocent civilians and passengers were inhuman and condemnable acts. The president said neither any religion nor a society allowed such repugnant acts.
The Baloch nation strongly opposed those elements who had taken unarmed passengers, elders and children as hostage, he said, according to a press release from the President Secretariat Press Wing. The president prayed for the early recovery of those who sustained injuries during the attack.
Prime Minister Shehbaz, according to a separate press release issued from the Prime Minister's Office Media Wing, said that security forces officers and personnel were eliminating terrorists bravely during the ongoing response.
"Despite a difficult terrain, the morale of the security forces is high and they are pushing back the coward terrorists with their timely action," Shehbaz said. He expressed the hope that the security operation would soon meet with success and the terrorists would be eliminated.
Shehbaz said that inhuman terrorists, who launched the cowardly assault on Jaffar Express at Dhadhar-Bolan Pass did not deserve any concession. "Terrorists are the enemies of progress and development of Balochistan province," he said.
"Targeting of innocent passengers in the holy and blessed month of Ramazanul Mubarak proves it clearly that terrorists have no relation with Islam, Pakistan and Balochistan," he added. He vowed the fight against terrorism would continue till complete eradication of this spectre from the country.
Any conspiracy to spread chaos and lawlessness in the country would be foiled, he continued, stressing that the government would never allow enemies of the nation to succeed in their nefarious designs. "In this fight against terrorism, the entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the security forces."
Earlier, addressing that federal cabinet meeting, Shehbaz dilated on a resurgence of terrorism in the country and acknowledged that the law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) alongside the armed forces were rendering great sacrifices on a daily basis that needed to be remembered.
"Without complete peace, the dream of development and prosperity is elusive. The valiant personnel of police, armed forces and Rangers are rendering ultimate sacrifices and the nation will have to remember it," the prime minister said.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the incident, saying: "The beasts who fire on innocent passengers do not deserve any concessions". Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar also strongly condemned the incident.
"The heinous plans of anti-national and anti-social elements will never be allowed to be allowed," he said in a statement. "The Sindh government stands with the Balochistan government. He hoped police and other LEAs will bring this situation under control.
Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said in their separate statements that those targeting innocent civilians were not just enemies of the nation but of humanity itself.
They strongly condemned the cowardly attempt to undermine the country's peace and stability and stressed that such anti-state elements would be dealt with firmly and decisively. They said that the evil designs of the enemies would by foiled.
"Attack on passengers in Dhadar is a crime against humanity and those responsible should be severely punished." Gilani said. "Terrorists cannot shake the national resolve with such cowardly acts. The nation is united and the evil intentions of the enemies will be crushed," he added.
He reaffirmed his full support for the security forces, and called for effective measures to eliminate elements seeking to destabilise the country. "The nation stands in solidarity with the families of the passengers during this difficult time," he added.
Former Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani also strongly condemned the Jaffer Express attack, saying that targeting unarmed passengers during the holy month was a cowardly act. "The government and the security forces are working for the safe return of the hostages," Sanjrani said.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti confirmed that pressure on militants was being maintained. "All-out efforts are being made to ensure the unharmed recovery of every passenger. Security forces are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control," he said in a statement.

Pakistan's economic growth on track: PM Shehbaz
Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while chairing a federal cabinet meeting on Tuesday in Islamabad, expressed satisfaction on economic indicators while maintaining that the country has now reached a take-off position. "After defeating India in a conventional war, we now need to surpass it in the economic field as well. The entire nation is united, and such opportunities arise only once in a century." he said. While discussing the budget for the next fiscal year, PM Shehbaz said that the government and the people have faced severe challenges over the past year and a half. He lauded the salaried class for playing a vital role in economic stability, urging the wealthy and influential classes to also play their part. He said the common man and the salaried class have played a vital role in economic stability, and the salaried class has borne a significant burden in the previous budget, contributing Rs400 billion to the national treasury. Due to the sacrifices, hard work, and efforts of the salaried class, Pakistan has reached a position where it is ready for take-off, he added, questioning the wealthy and influential sections of society about their contribution to the country. He further said that positive indicators of economic stability have emerged, with a decrease in inflation rate and policy rate, an increase in exports, and a significant increase in foreign exchange reserves and IT exports. It is time to focus on economic growth in the current budget, he added. The PM said that Pakistan defeated an enemy that claimed it was incomparable to Pakistan in a conventional war, and now we will also defeat India in the economic field. With determination and hard work, nothing is impossible, and everyone needs to work together day and night to move forward. "All institutions have played a role in economic successes, and now is the time for us to move forward together. The entire nation is united, and such opportunities arise only once in a century. We should not waste this moment but utilise it. India is talking about using water as a weapon after its defeat in war, but we will take every single drop of water that belongs to Pakistan, and we will not tolerate any disruption. India has no right to stop our share of water, and it cannot do so," he added. "We have discussed the situation with all four provinces, and we will be successful on this front as well," he said, while appreciating the hard work of all ministries, especially finance, regarding the budget. PM Shehbaz also condemned the ongoing atrocities in Palestine and Kashmir, saying that the brutality in Palestine is the worst form of oppression in the present era, and the international community should play a role in achieving an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He lamented that innocent children, girls, and Muslims are being killed, and such atrocities have not been witnessed ever before. He added that the people of Kashmir and Palestine will definitely achieve freedom. The PM reiterated Pakistan's full support for the Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters, saying that the people of Pakistan stand and will continue to stand with them.

Proxy war
EDITORIAL: During his recent visit to Quetta accompanied by Army chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed a grand jirga of tribal elders, highlighting the issue of terrorism backed by India he called 'fitna al-Hindustan' — a reference to insurgent groups like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which have been involved in a series of high-profile terrorist attacks targeting the security forces, Chinese interests — especially those tied to CPEC — as well as innocent civilians from other provinces. A few days ago, a suicide bombing on a school bus in Khuzdar claimed six lives, four of them children, and wounded 40 other children. In his conversation at the jirga, the Army chief said that Indian-sponsored proxy war is no longer hidden; it is an open malicious act of terrorism waged on our people, our progress, and our peace. 'We have concrete proof of India's hand behind terrorist networks operating in Balochistan', he averred, adding 'these nefarious attempts of the enemy will fail.' As a matter of fact, India's role in fomenting terrorism has been an open secret since the ultra-Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. A while ago, his national security advisor had publicly declared his government's new 'Offensive Defence Strategy' aimed at destabilising Pakistan by waging hybrid warfare — inflicting harm on this country without engaging in a direct military confrontation. This the Indian government has been doing by providing funding, arms and training to BLA and other such groups through its intelligence agency RAW operatives, like the naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was arrested while aiding and instigating acts of terrorism in Balochistan. After the humiliating setback suffered in its 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan, the Modi government has an even stronger urge to try and undermine Pakistan via its proxies, some of whom have no hesitation to show the connection. The day after cessation of hostilities on May 10, BLA openly asked, in a press release, India to take action against Pakistan, promising to act along with other Baloch militant groups as its 'military arm' on the western side. India hurts Pakistan to achieve its strategic objective of weakening a traditional rival by exploiting its fault lines. But the current approach to the security environment in that troubled province, to say the least, is unproductive. Use of force for the past two decades has not helped resolve the situation, and calls for course correction. What is needed is a multi-dimensional approach to address longstanding grievances of the Baloch people, which play into the hands of hostile forces. It is good to note that in his speech to the jirga PM Sharif emphasised the need for talks to bring back those 'misled' by terrorists, and redress the wider issues plaguing the province. That though can happen only if true representatives of the Baloch people are duly empowered to hold meaningful talks with leadership of the dissidents. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
