Pakistan's economic growth on track: PM Shehbaz
Listen to article
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while chairing a federal cabinet meeting on Tuesday in Islamabad, expressed satisfaction on economic indicators while maintaining that the country has now reached a take-off position.
"After defeating India in a conventional war, we now need to surpass it in the economic field as well. The entire nation is united, and such opportunities arise only once in a century." he said.
While discussing the budget for the next fiscal year, PM Shehbaz said that the government and the people have faced severe challenges over the past year and a half. He lauded the salaried class for playing a vital role in economic stability, urging the wealthy and influential classes to also play their part.
He said the common man and the salaried class have played a vital role in economic stability, and the salaried class has borne a significant burden in the previous budget, contributing Rs400 billion to the national treasury.
Due to the sacrifices, hard work, and efforts of the salaried class, Pakistan has reached a position where it is ready for take-off, he added, questioning the wealthy and influential sections of society about their contribution to the country.
He further said that positive indicators of economic stability have emerged, with a decrease in inflation rate and policy rate, an increase in exports, and a significant increase in foreign exchange reserves and IT exports. It is time to focus on economic growth in the current budget, he added.
The PM said that Pakistan defeated an enemy that claimed it was incomparable to Pakistan in a conventional war, and now we will also defeat India in the economic field. With determination and hard work, nothing is impossible, and everyone needs to work together day and night to move forward.
"All institutions have played a role in economic successes, and now is the time for us to move forward together. The entire nation is united, and such opportunities arise only once in a century. We should not waste this moment but utilise it. India is talking about using water as a weapon after its defeat in war, but we will take every single drop of water that belongs to Pakistan, and we will not tolerate any disruption. India has no right to stop our share of water, and it cannot do so," he added.
"We have discussed the situation with all four provinces, and we will be successful on this front as well," he said, while appreciating the hard work of all ministries, especially finance, regarding the budget.
PM Shehbaz also condemned the ongoing atrocities in Palestine and Kashmir, saying that the brutality in Palestine is the worst form of oppression in the present era, and the international community should play a role in achieving an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
He lamented that innocent children, girls, and Muslims are being killed, and such atrocities have not been witnessed ever before. He added that the people of Kashmir and Palestine will definitely achieve freedom.
The PM reiterated Pakistan's full support for the Palestinian and Kashmiri brothers and sisters, saying that the people of Pakistan stand and will continue to stand with them.

KSE-100 settles at new record high as PSX reacts positively to budget
Investors at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) rejoiced over the lack of major taxation measures proposed during the budget for fiscal year 2025-26, as the benchmark KSE-100 Index settled at a new record high of 124,352.68 on Wednesday. Bullish momentum persisted throughout the trading session, pushing the KSE-100 to an intra-day high of 124,588.17. At close, the benchmark index settled at 124,352.68, amid an increase of 2,328.24 points or 1.91%. Across-the-board buying momentum was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and power generation. Index-heavy stocks including HUBCO, PSO, WAFI, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, HBL, MCB, MEBL and UBL settled in the green. The upswing at PSX comes as the government did not announce any 'major changes on taxation', said Samiullah Tariq, Head of Research at Pak Kuwait Investment Company Limited, told Business Recorder. 'Capital gain dividends are retained at 15%,' he added. In a statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed satisfaction over the stock market performance. 'The bullish trend in the stock market is an expression of confidence by investors and businessmen in the people-friendly budget,' he said. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the federal budget 2025-26 to the parliament on Tuesday, with a total outlay of Rs 17.573 trillion, targeting a GDP growth rate of 4.2 per cent against 2.7 per cent in the outgoing year. Aurangzeb termed the budget the start of a strategy to create a competitive economy and economic productivity to increase exports and fundamentally change the economy's DNA. The government has set an inflation target of 7.5% for the next fiscal year. Regarding the fiscal deficit, the government projected a target of 3.9% of the GDP — or Rs5,037 billion — from the outgoing fiscal year's target of 5.9%. The primary surplus is targeted at 2.4% of the GDP against the budgeted 2% in the current fiscal year, which has been revised to 2.2%. Internationally, share markets and the dollar on Wednesday offered a guarded welcome to the latest signs of progress in US-China trade talks, while awaiting more detail of what was decided and whether it would stick for long. Bond investors were also hunkered down for a reading in US inflation that could show the early impact of tariffs on prices, and a Treasury auction that will test demand for the debt. Over in London, negotiators from Washington and Beijing said they had 'agreed a framework on trade' that would be taken back to their leaders. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added the implementation plan should result in restrictions on rare earths and magnets being resolved, but again offered no specifics. The law was another hurdle as a federal appeals court allowed President Donald Trump's most sweeping tariffs to remain in effect on Tuesday while it reviews a lower court decision blocking them. Investors, who have been badly burned by trade turmoil before, offered a cautious response and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.2%. Japan's Nikkei added 0.4% and Australian stocks firmed 0.4%.

Post-budget presser: ‘Have to get money from somewhere to provide relief somewhere', says Auranzgeb
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb on Wednesday addressed the concerns of stakeholders regarding the budget for fiscal year 2025-26 presented before the National Assembly (NA) a day ago. Addressing the media persons, Aurangzeb maintained that the income tax levy for the salaried persons earning between Rs600,000 and Rs1.2 million annually is 2.5%. 'Because every number is locked, so we have to get money from somewhere to provide relief somewhere,' he said. 'This is a work in progress.' During the budget speech, Aurangzeb proposed halving the income tax rate to 2.5% for the salaried persons earning between Rs600,000 and Rs1.2 million annually. However, it is important to note that there was a discrepancy between the rate announced during the speech and the rate stated in the Finance Bill — the latter sets the tax at an even lower 1% for this income bracket. The finance minister reiterated that the government remains committed to issuing the inaugural Panda bond during this calendar year. 'We do want to access the euro and US dollar market, we anticipate entering these markets in 2026, certainly not during this calendar year, as we need to achieve a certain rating,' he said. Aurangzeb said that the tariff reform mentioned during the budget speech 'is very significant' for the country and will enhance the country's exports. 'Out of a total of 7,000 tariff lines, the government has decided to eliminate additional customs duty on 4,000 of them,' he said. Fiscal space limited Aurangzeb said that the government wanted to provide maximum relief to the salaried class, but added, 'The reality is that we can only offer as much relief as our fiscal space permits.' The country's tax-to-GDP ratio has reached 10.3% in the current fiscal year. 'In FY26 we intend to increase it to 10.9%,' he said. 'We need enabling amendments and legislation to plug leakages in the system, so the government doesn't have to resort to additional taxation measures of around Rs400-500 billion,' Aurangzeb said. The finance minister noted that the government expenditure has increased by 1.9% this fiscal year. 'We have not imposed any additional tax on the agriculture sector,' he said. The government will provide soft-term loans to small farmers. The finance minister noted that the government expenditure has increased by 1.9%. Meanwhile, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal clarified that the increase is limited to critical needs. Surcharge on Electricity Bills On reports regarding the imposition of a 10% surcharge on electricity bills, Chairman FBR, Rashid Mehmood Langrial, clarified that no additional surcharge has been imposed. Responding to a query on how the federal government could delink population from the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, Auranzgeb maintained, 'Everything will be done in consultation with provinces.' Responding to a query on why the government maintained the minimum wage at Rs37,000, Aurangzeb said the decision was made in consideration of industrial growth. On the imposition of 18% tax on solar panels, Langrial explained that the GST of around 16-18% was imposed on less assembled solar panels, whereas there was no GST on imported fully assembled solar panels. 'The local manufacturing was at a disadvantage. We want to create an enabling environment for the local sector,' the FBR chief said. Responding to a query, Imdadullah Bosal informed that the budget figures are 'locked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)'. Govt salary increase Bosal stated that the budgeted increase in government salaries—from 6% to 10%—would have a fiscal impact of approximately Rs28–30 billion. He informed that the Ministry of Finance will hold consultations with the defence ministry regarding the introduction of a contributory pension scheme. Earlier, reporters staged a boycott of the press conference after the government failed to hold a scheduled technical briefing on the Finance Bill. Ruckus ahead of post-budget press conference Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday presented the federal budget 2025-26 to the parliament, with a total outlay of Rs17.573 trillion, targeting a GDP growth target of 4.2% against 2.7% in the outgoing year.
