Williamson County authorities crack down on distracted driving with safety operation
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Williamson County officers launched a safety operation to stop distracted driving as part of a state-wide safety campaign to remind drivers about Tennessee's distracted driving law.
'The goal is to educate and inform motorists [on] the dangers and hazards of distracted driving,' Greg Wilhelm, lieutenant in the Williamson County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies in Williamson County participated and used an unmarked bus to spot distracted drivers along Interstate 65. Wilhelm told News 2 that the problem goes beyond just cell phones. During Wednesday's operation, News 2 saw one driver get pulled over for eating while driving.
'Eating while you're driving — using two hands to eat a cheeseburger — if you're putting the makeup on in the mirror while you're driving, that is distracted driving,' Wilhelm said.
The only exception to Tennessee's hands-free law is if you are communicating with law enforcement during an emergency.
'We just have this nature — since the uptick in technology over the last two decades — that we have to do it right then and there,' Wilhem said. 'It's at our fingertips at any moment, so everybody feels compelled to address it right there.'
Wilhelm said most people who get pulled over are understanding and apologetic.
'It can wait. That's the biggest message that I would like to push out to everybody,' Wilhelm added.

Last year in Williamson County, there were about three times as many crashes caused by distracted driving compared to impaired driving, according to the WCSO.
'Today's operation really is about keeping people safe. It's not about tickets,' WCSO public information officer Becky Coyle said. 'Nobody's keeping a tally of how many people we can ticket. … It really is about keeping our community safe.'

MNPD looking into phone data to try to solve 2017 cold case
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — In 2017, a woman was found shot and killed inside a vehicle outside an apartment building in South Nashville. To date, no one has been arrested in connection with the crime. MAY 2017 | Woman found shot to death in South Nashville On the morning of May 26, 2017, the MNPD received a call about a dead woman inside a white Kia Soul at an apartment complex in at 455 Swiss Avenue. 'She was seated in the driver's seat and appeared to be shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene,' Christopher Stevick, a Cold Case Unit detective with the MNPD, told News 2. The victim was identified as 31-year-old Vian Ahmed Kasim. For years, no one could be linked to the crime. 'Shooting investigations in general when there's not an immediate motive can be tough,' Stevick said. Kasim's sister told News 2 that Kasim was an entrepreneur and had a phone business, adding that Kasim's passion was singing. She and her family came to the U.S. from Kurdistan in 1993 and she lived in Nashville for six years before her death. 'She seemed to be really active and trying to establish herself and had established herself in Nashville and was pretty driven to be a small business owner,' Stevick said. Stevick said that Kasim was not a resident of the apartment complex near where her body was found, but had a friend who lived there. Stevick told News 2 that no surveillance video was submitted in the case, making it more difficult to solve. However, there have been some investigative leads. 'Some of these leads are leads towards potentially new information. Some of these are leads that point to specific people,' Stevick said. 'There are several of them and that's one of the challenges with these cases.' There is a deep investigation needed for several potential leads, Stevick said. On top of that, three cell phones that belonged to Kasim were found in the vehicle. ⏩ With new technology, the MNPD is now the process of taking another look through phone data. 'Now, we have new technology. It's best practice [that] as new technology emerges and advances, we always want to take another look,' Stevick said. Baby hit by stray bullet during shootout in Spring Hill
SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — A baby is recovering at the hospital after a stray bullet from an early morning shootout in the street tore through a Spring Hill home and struck the sleeping child in the head. According to the Spring Hill Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3000 block of Shandor Street in the Harvest Pointe subdivision shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, June 6. PREVIOUS: Baby injured after shot fired into Spring Hill home Authorities said they believe a sedan stopped next to a person out on Shandor Street. The occupants of the vehicle reportedly shot at the young man, who fired back. Door bell camera footage shows grainy figures in and around a car. You can hear the loud gunshots before the vehicle accelerates out of frame. Several of the roughly 15 rounds fired in the shootout penetrated a nearby home. Police said one of the bullets went through a wall and grazed the skull of a 1-year-old girl who was sleeping inside the house. Body camera footage shows the intense response as a large number of officers flooded the neighborhood to collect evidence and search for those involved in the shooting. 'Hopefully they find out who did this and they seek justice,' a mother who lives in the neighborhood told News 2. The woman didn't know the family of the child who was injured, but like many residents, she was shaken by the outburst of violence that rocked the normally quiet community. 'I'm feeling for the family and our community, and I hope that we get through this and we find out who these people are. It's just horrible what's happened here today,' she said. News 2 spoke with the family's pastor from Southview Church, Josh Clendenen, who said the little girl suffered a skull fracture and some bleeding on the brain, but she is stable. ⏩ 'As a church community, we were shocked to hear of the events that took place last night in Spring Hill, and to learn one of the babies of our church family was injured, was devastating. We are rallying around the family with prayers and support, but also praying diligently for the protection of our community and its first responders,' Clendenen said. 'We're asking everyone to keep this family in your prayers and we encourage you to pray for your communities as well. We know God was protecting the entire family, and are believing for a complete healing and speedy recovery.' Kilmar Abrego Garcia returns to US to face criminal charges
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, has landed in the United States to face criminal charges, according to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. An indictment, which was recently filed in the U.S. District Court Middle District of Tennessee, reports that Abrego Garcia, 29, conspired to bring undocumented migrants to the United States from around 2016 to 2025. Body cam footage released from 2022 THP traffic stop of Maryland man deported to El Salvador Abrego Garcia and co-conspirators reportedly collected financial payments for illegal transportation and knowingly transferred the money between one another. The indictment alleges that the 29-year-old used his status in MS-13 to further his criminal activity. According to the court filing, Abrego Garcia also participated in varying transportation routes within the United States. Co-conspirators also alleged that Abrego Garcia trafficked narcotics, abused women and had been associated with child sexual abuse, Bondi said. garcia indictmentDownload On May 2, the Tennessee Highway Patrol released video of traffic stop dated Nov. 30, 2022, which involved Abrego Garcia in Cookeville. The 29-year-old was reportedly pulled over for speeding in a vehicle with eight passengers and told state troopers they'd been working in Missouri. As seen on video, THP troopers could be heard discussing among themselves their suspicions of human trafficking since the group was traveling without luggage. However, the 29-year-old was not charged with a crime that day. When asked about what's changed since the Department of Homeland Security declined to charge Abrego Garcia, Bondi told reporters that it's due to Trump's presidency. 'Thanks to the bright light that has been shined on Abrego Garcia, this investigation continued with actually amazing police work and we were able to track this case and stop this international smuggling ring from continuing,' Bondi said, citing 'recently found facts.' The indictment alleges that over the past nine years, Abrego Garcia transported undocumented migrants and children on approximately more than 100 trips between Texas to Maryland and other states. Bondi claimed that this was his 'full-time job' and that he was associated with a larger 'smuggling' group. 'The defendant traded the innocence of children for profit,' Bondi said. ⏩ Abrego Garcia has since been charged with 'conspiracy to transport illegal aliens and unlawful transportation of undocumented aliens.' An arrest warrant, which was signed in Nashville and obtained by News 2, states that Abrego Garcia was to be arrested and brought before United States magistrate judge. Bondi said in a Friday press conference that the U.S. had presented El Salvador with an arrest warrant and they agreed to return him to the U.S. 'This is what American justice looks like,' Bondi said. Bondi added that upon completion of his sentence, officials anticipate that he will be returned to El Salvador. The moves come more than two months after the Trump administration acknowledged in court filings that Abrego Garcia's deportation was due to an 'administrative error.' No additional details were immediately released.
