ROCKLIN – One of the biggest stories of the year has been the fate of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents back in 1989.
The Menendez brothers can be seen sitting courtside at a New York Knicks game after killing their parents in 1989.
The two have become a big part of pop culture and have even made their mark in the sports world.
In a basketball card from 1990 of New York Knicks guard Mark Jackson, you can see the brothers in the background sitting courtside. Over the years, this card has become a story in itself.
"Both Menendez brothers are in the background of this. They're playing in New York, Mark Jackson is passing the ball and to his right, you'll see the Menendez brothers sitting courtside," said Imran Poladi, the owner of True Sports Cards and Collectables in Rocklin.
After killing their parents in 1989, the Menendez brothers went on a spending spree, purchasing Rolex watches, real estate, and high-priced, courtside tickets.
"The date of that actual game that this was taken was after the crimes were committed," Poladi said. "So they're living their best life after what they did to their parents."
Poladi said over the years, the card has built its own cult following. The more the Menendez brothers are in the news, the more calls he gets.
"It is truly, based on print run, a card that's worth 25 cents. But because of the pop culture reference to it, it's turned into today's value between $10-$15," Poladi said.
Depending on the condition and grade, it can be found for sale for $650 online.
After the murders, the brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. But, after winning their resentencing bid earlier this year, the Menendez brothers are one step closer to their freedom.
Poladi said once a decision is made, he's sure the phone will start ringing from not only true sports fans, but also fans of true crime.
"It'll come to the forefront. Just like any news cycle, as you know," Poladi said. "As soon as it gets in the news cycle, I have to have that thing. I have to be a part of that thing."

Reflecting on the emotional journey of welcoming her now eight-month-old daughter Méi via surrogate, Olivia told People: 'It was the first time I was like, 'Oh wait, is this what it's like to be an expectant dad?'' After undergoing extensive treatment — including a lymph node dissection, nipple delay procedure, and double mastectomy — Olivia faced surgical menopause following the removal of her uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries during her cancer battle. 'It was important to do it at that moment, but it was also scary because my type of cancer feeds on hormones, and there are a lot of hormone injections with IVF,' she said, referring to the fertility preservation process she underwent before her hysterectomy. Her doctor devised a special IVF protocol tailored for cancer patients, enabling Olivia to retrieve seven eggs. 'At my age, about one in 10 eggs is healthy,' she explained. After fertilisation, two embryos were 'strong enough to be tested for abnormalities and the gender'. She and John hoped for a girl, with Olivia saying: 'I remember I was on a walk with John, and I said, 'I really don't think that I'll be okay unless we get two girl embryos. I know this puts me at risk, but I just need you to support me,'' she recalled. Mulaney responded: ''Whatever you need.'' That same day, Olivia received a call confirming both embryos were female. 'That was a sign for me everything was going to be okay,' she said. The couple then embarked on the 'emotional process' of finding a surrogate. 'The number one thing that I wanted in a surrogate was someone who was kind,' Olivia said. A friend's recommendation led them to an agency, which presented two potential surrogates. One candidate expressed a desire to help someone who had survived cancer. 'After meeting with her, I knew she was the right person to carry our daughter,' Olivia said. She added: 'The first thing I worried about was if I would be able to find somebody who would love and take care of my daughter as much as I would. 'We were so lucky to find someone so kind who we bonded with so much.'

Trade Idea Sends Dolphins' Jonnu Smith to Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dolphins and the Steelers renewed trade talks surrounding tight end Jonnu Smith earlier this week. The Smith trade conversation has a gone back and forth like a seesaw over the last couple weeks, but it's landed back in the direction of the Dolphins listening to offers. Advertisement The Steelers seemed like a suitable trade partner prior to the signing of Super Bowl champion quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and now it looks like an even better fit. The Steelers do have Pat Freiermuth who has caught at least 60 passes in three of his four years in the NFL with the Steelers. However, the addition of Smith would add another weapon, and upgrade at the position for Rodgers. Pittsburgh has already been active on the trade market this offseason with the addition of DK Metcalf and the departure of George Pickens. Metcalf cost the Steelers a second-round pick and the Pickens trade involved an additional seventh-round pick in exchange for a third-round and fifth-round pick. Now, the Steelers have the opportunity to add Smith to an offense with Metcalf, Robert Woods, Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson at running back, alongside a future Hall of Famer at quarterback. Advertisement Not to mention, Smith has a connection with the Steelers new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Smith coached the tight end in Tennessee, and then was his offensive coordinator. Three years later, Smith was the head coach of the Falcons with the current Dolphins' tight end playing for him. Arthur Smith and Jonnu Smith have plenty of experience together, which is a main reason the Steelers are such a viable trade target for the Dolphins tight end. The proposed trade idea by Bleacher Report's Kurt Benkert for Smith to the Steelers had the Dolphins getting a fourth round pick in return. However, in his other six trade proposals, the Dolphins were getting a mix of fifth or sixth round picks in return. This seems more like the accurate price for the veteran tight end, but it'll ultimately come down to how much the desired team values Smith. Advertisement With all of this being said, it's not a done deal that Smith gets dealt. His agent has said Smith would love to play in Miami in 2025, and Mike McDaniel said he wants Smith on the team.
