Encarnacion-Strand lifts the Reds over the Diamondbacks 4-3 in 10th inning of suspended game
CINCINNATI — Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered in the sixth inning to tie the game before it was suspended Friday night and then hit a walk-off double in the 10th on Saturday to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.
Encarnacion-Strand's heroics came in his first game since April 17 after coming off the injured list Friday. It was the first walk-off win this season for the Reds (31-33) and their first victory in extra innings.
Encarnacion-Strand hit his third home run — a one-out solo shot off rookie Cristian Mena to tie it at 3-all in the sixth. Mena got pinch hitter Gavin Lux to ground out with men on to end the inning before rain stopped play.
Ketel Marte hit his 12th home run — a two-run shot in the third — and Geraldo Perdomo followed with his sixth as Arizona grabbed a 3-0 lead.
TJ Friedl hit his fifth homer — a two-run shot in the bottom half — to make it 3-2.
Tony Santillan (1-1) struck out two in a scoreless 10th for the win. Graham Ashcraft struck out four in the first two innings Saturday and Emilio Pagán fanned two in a perfect ninth. Starter Nick Lodolo allowed three runs on five hits in six innings.
Ryan Thompson (1-2) was tagged with the loss after Encarnacion-Strand drove in mandatory runner Jake Fraley. Starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs on six hits in five innings. Reliever Jalen Beeks struck out 3 of 5 batters after play resumed.
Encarnacion-Strand's homer on Friday came just in time to take a rain-shortened win away from the D-backs and force a suspension.
Five of Arizona's six hits came in the first five innings.
Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (2-1, 3.43) will start the regularly scheduled game against Reds RHP Nick Martinez (3-6, 3.89).

Davis earned the nickname "Big Game Gabe" during his tenure in Buffalo. He had a number of standout performances for the Bills, namely in the playoffs. Davis tallied 201 yards and four touchdowns on just eight receptions, having one of the greatest playoff performances in Bills' history. His heroics in the divisional game marked just the ninth time a player has recorded 200+ receiving yards in a playoff game, and the first time a receiver has hauled in four touchdowns. A look at Saturday's Special Olympics
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Today was the second day of the Special Olympics in Terre Hauteand athletes and their families gathered at Indiana State campus to kick off today's events. Hundreds of people came out to Indiana State University for the Special Olympics on Saturday and so far, it's been a hit. Fulton Mraz says track and field has been his favorite event. Last year he won a gold medal. Mraz says he is looking forward to other events being held over the weekend. 'It feels pretty good. Um I'm enjoying it. The weather's nice and the dance is tonight, so I'm gonna party tonight and wear some gold suits, ' said Mraz. This weekend's activities included bingo, pickleball, and basketball. Athlete Tanner Wills is competing in track and field, the main javelin, and shotput. 'I love being coming here. Get to meet all of the people that you don't get to see during the year,' said Wills. According to Olando Nicks, it's been very impactful to have the Special Olympics events. 'Really inspiring. This is my third year, and you know, um just being with our coaches and they encourage us to work hard and try our best it's like I've never been a part of this before,' said Nicks. Bengals Move Joe Burrow Schedule Amid Hendrickson Controversy
Maybe it's all a coincidence ... just like the Cincinnati Bengals having selected Texas A&M pass rusher Shemar Stewart in the 2025 NFL Draft had nothing to do with the foreshadowing the team's plan for current edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. But the timing of a new Joe Burrow move is certainly notable. Advertisement Hendrickson is desirous of a hefty contract extension with the Bengals after his fourth year in Cincy. He topped the NFL in sacks last year with 17.5, meeting that total now in back-to-back seasons. Is Cincy giving up on him? Doubtful. Even with the young addition in Stewart. But Cincy is pulling the plug on negotiations, Hendrickson is now claiming, adding that the Bengals essentially lied to him about their plans to up his salary. "The (contract) offers prior to the draft did not reflect the vision we shared and were promised last offseason if I continued to play at a high level,'' Hendrickson tells ESPN. "Coaches are aware of these past conversations.'' Advertisement And, as things have turned ugly, Bengals QB Joe Burrow - who has been vocal and supportive of the idea of management paying to keep the gang together - is in the news due to a schedule change. Burrow was initially scheduled to speak with local reporters on Tuesday. But in the wake of this statement from Hendrickson - maybe just coincidentally - the Bengals have told local reporters that they have pushed the press conference to Tuesday, May 20. Maybe by then ... the Hendrickson heat will have cooled? The player is asserting that the Bengals have shut down talks altogether. ... and he's obviously angry about it. Advertisement "Rather than using collaboration to get us to a point to bring me home to the team, THEY are no longer communicating,'' he said. "I have been eagerly awaiting a resolution of this situation, but that's hard to do when there is no discussion and an evident lack of interest in reaching mutual goals. The Athletic recently reported that things were moving in the right direction. That is clearly not quite accurate, as the claim that they are "getting really good vibes coming out of Cincy that they're going to try to get a deal done with Trey'' does not jibe at all with this news. Like he has done for past deals, quarterback Burrow is adding to the "good vibes" by campaigning to keep Hendrickson with the Bengals.
