Encarnacion-Strand lifts the Reds over the Diamondbacks 4-3 in 10th inning of suspended game

CINCINNATI — Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered in the sixth inning to tie the game before it was suspended Friday night and then hit a walk-off double in the 10th on Saturday to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3. Encarnacion-Strand's heroics came in his first game since April 17 after coming off the injured list Friday. It was the first walk-off win this season for the Reds (31-33) and their first victory in extra innings. Encarnacion-Strand hit his third home run — a one-out solo shot off rookie Cristian Mena to tie it at 3-all in the sixth. Mena got pinch hitter Gavin Lux to ground out with men on to end the inning before rain stopped play. Ketel Marte hit his 12th home run — a two-run shot in the third — and Geraldo Perdomo followed with his sixth as Arizona grabbed a 3-0 lead. TJ Friedl hit his fifth homer — a two-run shot in the bottom half — to make it 3-2. Tony Santillan (1-1) struck out two in a scoreless 10th for the win. Graham Ashcraft struck out four in the first two innings Saturday and Emilio Pagán fanned two in a perfect ninth. Starter Nick Lodolo allowed three runs on five hits in six innings. Ryan Thompson (1-2) was tagged with the loss after Encarnacion-Strand drove in mandatory runner Jake Fraley. Starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs on six hits in five innings. Reliever Jalen Beeks struck out 3 of 5 batters after play resumed. Encarnacion-Strand's homer on Friday came just in time to take a rain-shortened win away from the D-backs and force a suspension. Five of Arizona's six hits came in the first five innings. Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (2-1, 3.43) will start the regularly scheduled game against Reds RHP Nick Martinez (3-6, 3.89). ___ AP MLB:

TJ Friedl's game-saving catch ends Reds' win over Brewers

June 4 - Pinch hitter Connor Joe drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly as the Cincinnati Reds edged the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Tuesday. Reds center fielder TJ Friedl robbed pinch hitter Jake Bauers of a game-tying home run for the final out when he leaped over the wall and brought the ball back. Tyler Stephenson and Will Benson homered for Cincinnati, which snapped a three-game skid and put an end to Milwaukee's eight-game winning streak. Matt McLain had a key double in the Reds' seventh-inning rally and made a lunging grab of a Christian Yelich line drive to second base in the eighth to help preserve the lead. Cincinnati reliever Graham Ashcraft (4-4) retired all four batters he faced in the seventh and eighth. Emilio Pagan pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in 17 chances. The Reds leveled the three-game series entering the rubber game on Wednesday. The Brewers wasted no time in getting to Cincinnati starter Hunter Greene, as Brice Turang lined the third pitch of the game down the right field line for a double. Jackson Chourio hit a rope to left-center that left fielder Benson caught while sliding awkwardly on the grass and fighting off the sun in his eyes. The red-hot Christian Yelich continued the solid contact off Greene with a sinking line-drive single to left-center, scoring Turang for a 1-0 Milwaukee lead. Yelich extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Milwaukee's Sal Frelick belted his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning. He drove a two-out, two-strike offering that Greene left over the middle of the plate over the fence in right field for a 2-0 lead. Greene allowed two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out seven, walking three and throwing 85 pitches. Brewers starter Freddy Peralta (5-4) was overpowering to start the game, striking out five of the first six Cincinnati batters and six of eight. He wound up permitting three runs on seven hits in his six-plus innings, striking out nine and walking three. The Reds finally got to Peralta in the fourth when Elly De La Cruz doubled with two outs and Stephenson followed with an opposite field two-run homer to right to tie the game 2-2. Peralta was left in the game by Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy to start the seventh inning at 92 pitches. The right-hander walked Jake Fraley and gave up a double to McLain, moving Fraley to third. Joe pinch-hit for Gavin Lux and drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out sacrifice fly to right off reliever Rob Zastryzny. --Field Level Media

'The training wheels are off' for Graham Ashcraft in the Reds' bullpen

'The training wheels are off' for Graham Ashcraft in the Reds' bullpen It had long been discussed that Graham Ashcraft's demeanor and pitching style might make him well-suited for a high-leverage bullpen role with the Cincinnati Reds. Late innings and pressure-cooker situations aren't for everyone, but Ashcraft's fastball-slider mix, plus his emotional nature on the mound, was thought to be a cocktail of qualities that would allow him to cope with the big, late-game situations. That was the hope for Ashcraft when he was moved to a bullpen role late in spring training. Advertisement Reds top prospects Chase Burns Reds top pitching prospect Chase Burns strikes out seven in his second start for Dayton Reds wakeup songs Elly De La Cruz What's Elly De La Cruz's walk-up song? Here are 2025 walk-up songs for various Reds stars Now, Ashcraft is living out that role, and doing it with great effect for the Reds. On Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ashcraft saw Cincinnati safely through the seventh and eighth innings, setting the table for Emilio Pagán's save in the 5-3 victory. Ashcraft's two-inning appearance was his second of the week. He also posted two scoreless frames in Tuesday's 1-0 win against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, and again set Pagán up for the save. After striking out the final batter he faced that night, Ashcraft glided off the mount and pumped his fast, a show of his zest for the big moments. Advertisement In total, Ashcraft logged five and 1/3 innings over four appearances in a weeklong span against the Milwaukee Brewers, Giants and Pirates. He's leaving a strong impression on his manager and teammates, and trending toward making a play to be the Reds' closer. Graham Ashcraft pitched two scoreless innings in the Reds' 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday night, his second straight scoreless two-inning stint. After Ashcraft competed for a place in the starting rotation in spring training, the Reds' decision to move him to the bullpen was met by the pitcher with enthusiasm, Reds manager Terry Francona said on Friday. "I actually think he was kind of excited when we told him," Francona said. "Not sure how he would react to it but I think he's − I think he was very excited and that helped. He's taken to it very quickly, and he didn't go kicking and screaming, which is good. Advertisement "Graham's growing into a pretty trusted reliever. Again, I know he's young in that role but I think his future is very bright." Ashcraft had already demonstrated some of the trademark characteristics of a closer long before his move to the bullpen. Manager Terry Francona was pleasantly surprised how Graham Ashcraft took the news he was being moved to the bullpen, and now it's paying dividends. "Graham's growing into a pretty trusted reliever," Francona said. "Again, I know he's young in that role but I think his future is very bright." Pagán described Ashcraft as an emotional pitcher. Getting out of a tough situation would sometimes produce a reaction from him, Pagán said, but it's hard to ride that emotional rollercoaster as a starter. Ashcraft managed the role of a starter well enough over four seasons, though. Sixty of his 66 appearances for the Reds were starts. He posted a career 17-20 record with a 4.80 ERA. Advertisement The early returns on his bullpen stint in 2025 are impossible to ignore: No runs allowed in 7 1/3 innings. Something good is happening here, and Ashcraft's bullpen counterparts see it. "We were saying in the bullpen, 'the training wheels are officially off with Graham in the bullpen,' " Pagán said. "I mean, he's gone multiple (innings two) times, I think? That's not easy to do at all, and in my opinion, tonight was the best his stuff has been, which is a credit to where he's at physically, how well he's repeating his delivery and you can see the confidence is kind of skyrocketing... The way he's throwing is an absolute weapon to us and we're fortunate to have him."
