UAE top court reconvicts 24 to life in prison in terror case
Following an appeal, the court charged the defendants for collaborating with the 'Justice and Dignity' terror group and for financing the Al-Islah terror organisation.
The court also ordered the confiscation of all funds and items linked to these crimes.
The previous verdict by State Security Chamber at the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal had dropped the criminal charges against the 24 defendants.
In his appeal, Attorney General Chancellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi explained that the lower court had overlooked the defendants involvement in financing and collaborating with the "Jusitice and Dignity" terror group.
On July 10, the Abu Dhabi Federal Appeals Court convicted 53 defendants linked to the 'Justice and Dignity Committee' terrorist organisation. Forty-three of them were sentenced to life in prison and five were handed 15-year jail terms, while five others were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined AED 10 million.
The court also imposed a fine of AED 20 million each on six companies that were convicted of money laundering to support a terrorist organisation. These firms have been ordered to close and all their assets will be confiscated. One defendant was acquitted.

Dubai Police has announced that more than 1,500 players from various nationalities, including international participants, will take part in the fifth edition of the Dubai Police Esports Tournament. Scheduled from 14 to 17 August at the Dubai Police Officers Club in Al Jaddaf, the event will feature a prize pool of AED 200,000. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Cycling Hub in the Dubai Police Officers Club. Over 17.6 million illegal excise goods seized in UAE
Image for illustration Inspectors from the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) have seized more than 17.6 million illegal excise goods from across markets in the UAE during the first six months of the year, marking an increase of 144.4 per cent. The raid uncovered products that lacked digital tax stamps and were not registered in the authority's electronic system. Among the confiscated items were 11.52 million tobacco products and 6.1 million goods, including soft drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened beverages. The FTA said it carried out a record of 85,500 inspections during the same period and collected AED 357.2 million in taxes and fines. All products have been confiscated, fines issued, and legal action taken against the violators. The FTA said the inspections are part of ongoing efforts to tackle tax fraud and protect consumers. Sara AlHabshi, Tax Compliance Executive Director of the Tax Affairs sector at FTA said they use advanced "digital technologies" to ensure goods "meet tax requirements for circulation in the UAE market".
