Time of India16 hours ago

NEW DELHI: State-controlled
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
(
BSNL
) will deploy an additional 1 lakh mobile towers for its commercial 4G services, following the successful installation of 1 lakh towers earlier this month, according to a report by The New Indian Express.
Union Minister of State for Communications
Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani
told the publication in a recent interview that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to shortly seek Cabinet approval for BSNL's 4G expansion in the country.
'After successfully installing 100,000 towers with optimal 4G equipment, we will approach the Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve another 100,000 towers,' Pemmasani said, as per the report.
The Centre, as per the report, is also planning to increase BSNL's cash flow to support deployment of more 4G and 5G equipment. The government reportedly plans to monetise BSNL assets.
A
Tata Consultancy Services
(TCS)-led consortium, which comprises the
Centre for Development of Telematics
(C-DoT) and homegrown gear maker Tejas Networks, along with
ITI Limited
, has deployed 1 lakh towers for BSNL's 4G network.
Acknowledging initial hiccups with the homegrown equipment in BSNL's network, the minister said it is expected to operate 'near perfection' by the end of July, or August next year.
BSNL has posted a profit after tax (PAT) of ₹280 crore in Q4FY25, up from ₹262 crore in Q3FY25, boosted by its nationwide roll-out of commercial fourth-generation (4G) services and 5G Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) initiatives.
The telecom PSU had posted a net loss of ₹849 crore in the fiscal fourth quarter that ended March 31, 2024. For entire FY25, BSNL's loss reduced by 58% to ₹2,247 crore, compared to a loss of ₹5,370 crore in FY24.
'The outlook for the coming year will continue to show strong top-line revenue growth alongside a steady decline in operating costs—both critical to sustained profitability,' the telecom carrier had said in its earnings statement.
Its private rivals, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), already provide commercial fifth-generation or 5G network services to customers.

PM Modi to begin 3-nation tour from Cyprus today

File photo: PM Modi (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi will travel to Cyprus on Sunday for the first leg of his three-nation tour that will see him participating in the G7 Summit in Canada and also visiting Croatia on his way back. Modi is also expected to have several bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit in Kananaskis. While the PM will have a meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, his other bilateral engagements are still being worked out, official sources said. Modi will also come face to face with US President Donald Trump for the first time since their meeting in Feb. The ministry of external affairs said in a statement that the visit to Cyprus - the first by an Indian PM since AB Vajpayee visited the country in 2002 - will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union. The visit to Cyprus is significant also as it comes in the middle of India's tensions with Turkiye over the latter's support to Pakistan. Ankara's recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northern region that was seized by Turkish forces in 1974 and differences over gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean remain a constant source of tensions between Turkiye and Cyprus. PM Modi's Air India One to take longer route to G7 Summit amid Israel-Iran conflict

Amid soaring tensions between Israel and Iran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flight to the G7 Summit in Canada has been forced to take a significant detour. The escalating conflict has thrown air traffic in West Asia into disarray, prompting countries to shut down airspaces and airlines to cancel or reroute flights. Even VIP travel is being affected, with PM Modi's specially designated aircraft, Air India One, now set for a longer-than-usual journey due to regional airspace Prime Minister will embark on a three-nation tour that includes Cyprus and Croatia, besides his G7 summit in Canada. He is scheduled to depart from Delhi on Sunday morning around 7:30 am and will first land in Larnaca, Cyprus, by 3:00 pm. The route to Cyprus would typically pass through airspaces of Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. However, with all these corridors either shut or deemed unsafe, a longer detour has been alternative route through UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan also remains uncertain amid regional instability. Indian aircraft have already been restricted from using Pakistani airspace since Operation Sindoor conducted from May 7 to 10. Sources confirm that these restrictions extend even to VIP flights such as Air India One. As a result, the Delhi-to-Larnaca leg of the Prime Minister's journey, which normally takes 8-9 hours, is expected to take longer. Following his 24-hour stop in Cyprus, Modi will continue to Canada on June 16, bypassing the conflict-ridden airspace over Russia and aerial crisis intensified following Israel's airstrikes on Iran on June 13. With several countries closing their skies to civilian flights, air routes between India and destinations in Europe and North America have become more complex. Passengers are now facing extended flight durations and rising fares. Sources estimate that flight times have gone up by one to two hours, while operating costs for airlines have surged by nearly 12 percent. Indian carriers such as Air India and IndiGo have already cancelled over a dozen international flights due to the unstable skies over West Asia remain tense, and the fallout is being felt not only by commercial airlines and travellers but also at the highest levels of diplomatic travel.
