Brunson sparks Knicks in comeback win over Celtics
Los Angeles – Jalen Brunson scored 29 points as the New York Knicks overturned a 20-point deficit to stun the Boston Celtics 108-105 in overtime in their opening NBA Eastern Conference semi-final series clash on Monday.
Brunson — the 40-point hero of New York's series-clinching win over Detroit last week — was once again in superb form as the Knicks silenced Boston's TD Garden with a remarkable second-half fightback.
Brunson's 29 points included five-of-nine from three-point range, with OG Anunoby also getting hot with 29 points including six three-pointers.
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum led Boston's scoring with 23 points apiece.
'It was a great team win,' Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said afterwards.
'We started well, then we fell into a hole and then we fought our way out and then we made tough plays down the stretch,' Thibodeau added.
Second seeds Boston, the reigning NBA champions, looked poised to get the best-of-seven series off to a winning start after pulling into a 72-52 lead early in the third quarter.
But Boston's double-digit cushion was whittled away after Anunoby and Brunson combined for 21 points in the third quarter as the Celtics scoring dried up.
Al Horford settled Boston's nerves with a three-pointer to close the quarter that left the Celtics up by nine points at 84-75.
The Knicks opened the fourth quarter though with quick three-pointers from Miles McBride and Anunoby either side of a Karl-Anthony Towns layup to close to within one point.
New York pulled level at 86-86 with just under eight minutes left in the quarter before a run of 11 points from Brunson helped New York sweep into a 97-91 lead.
Brunson had a golden chance to win it in regulation with the score tied at 100-100 but missed a layup with three seconds remaining.
Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Towns then took over in overtime to seal a gutsy win for the Knicks.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said lax defense in the second half had cost his team dearly.
'We left some of their good shooters open,' Mazzulla said. 'There's detail stuff that we have to be better at.'
Game two of the series takes place in Boston on Wednesday.

NBA champion Celtics eliminated from playoffs by rampant Knicks
New York – The New York Knicks thrashed the Boston Celtics 119-81 to send the defending champions crashing out of the NBA playoffs on Friday. The Knicks booked their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years with a rampant display to complete a 4-2 series victory. Six Knicks players finished in double figures, with Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby leading the way with 23 points apiece. Mikal Bridges drained four three-pointers on his way to 22 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns added 21. Josh Hart finished with a triple-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The blowout win sets up a showdown against the Knicks' arch-rivals the Indiana Pacers next week for a place in the NBA Finals. New York will head into that best-of-seven series brimming with confidence after an electrifying performance that swept aside a Boston team who had dominated the Knicks in a game five win on Wednesday. 'In game five they got the best of us and we responded tonight,' Brunson told ESPN after Friday's win. 'We just found a way to keep making plays on the defensive side, the offense was just rolling.' Brunson will spearhead the Knicks challenge 25 years after his father Rick was a member of the New York team that last played in the Eastern Conference finals in 2000. 'This is great. I mean, the fact that we haven't been here since my dad was on the team — he's not gonna like that — but it means a lot to this organization and this city.' – 'New York is dying for it' – Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said his team had delivered a complete performance to oust the reigning champions. 'I thought from start to finish we were terrific,' Thibodeau said. '(The Celtics) are a terrific team on both sides of the ball. They play their style no matter what, and so they're not going to hand you anything. You have to earn it. And I felt we did that. 'But we can't get carried away. Obviously it's a great win and we advance. But you also understand that you have to get ready for the next series. We know that Indiana is a terrific team and we're going to have to be ready.' A slew of celebrities such as Timothee Chalamet, Lenny Kravitz, Ben Stiller and Spike Lee were courtside at Madison Square Garden to see the Knicks romp to victory. Thousands of Knicks fans, who could either not get tickets or were unable to shell out $600 for the last ones available, watched on giant screens. A sea of orange and blue seized possession of Seventh Avenue from Madison Square Garden to Macy's, whilst fans celebrated as if they had won the title. Some climbed lamp posts, others stood on car roofs whilst the historic landmark the Empire State Building was illuminated with the Knicks colours. 'I had to be here … It's incredible … the city is buzzing!' said teacher Jason Zegarski, who had come in from Trenton in neighbouring New Jersey. Apricot Brown, an author and content creator for children, is old enough to recall the last time the Knicks made the Conference final. 'It's like a lifetime, when I was about a teen, with (team legend) Patrick Ewing,' she told AFP. 'It was, like, this huge thing in my family.' Not many Knicks fans, though, recall the last time they were crowned overall champions, back in 1973, making the desire to go all the way even more fervent. 'The Knicks have the most loyal fans and the most desperate fans,' brand manager Glenn Beyer told AFP. 'New York is dying for it.' Boston — who were dealt a crushing blow in game four with a season-ending injury to star Jayson Tatum — had given their fans hope of a miraculous comeback after their game five win. However, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged the Knicks had just been too good. 'At the end of the day, we set a goal out, and we didn't achieve that goal,' he said afterwards. 'You have to take your hats off to the Knicks. They played a great series and they've been great all year, and Thibs is a great coach — so you have to take your hat off to them.'

Pistons snap NBA playoff skid, vintage Leonard leads Clippers
Los Angeles – The Detroit Pistons snapped their record 15-game NBA playoff losing streak with a 100-94 victory over the New York Knicks on Monday to level their Eastern Conference first-round series at one game apiece. Cade Cunningham scored 33 points with 12 rebounds and Dennis Schroder added 20 points off the bench — including a go-ahead three-pointer with 55.7 seconds left — as the Pistons thwarted another Knicks' rally bid. The Los Angeles Clippers also bounced back from a game-one defeat, beating the Nuggets 105-102 in Denver behind a brilliant 39-point performance from Kawhi Leonard. Leonard made 15 of his 19 shot attempts and the Clippers withstood NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic's triple-double of 26 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to level their Western Conference series at 1-1. The Pistons, in the playoffs for the first time since 2019, notched their first playoff victory since game four of the 2008 Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics. Two days after the Knicks authored a 21-0 scoring run to rally in game one, the Pistons were pushed to the finish in a fast-paced, physical encounter at Madison Square Garden. They led by as many as 15 in the third quarter, but the Knicks had cut the deficit to eight going into the final period. New York star Jalen Brunson scored 14 of his 37 points in the fourth and fed Josh Hart for a dunk that tied it at 94-94 with 1:15 to play. But Schroder answered immediately, drilling a three-pointer that put the Pistons ahead for good. The Knicks came up empty on three straight possessions while Schroder and Jalen Duren connected at the free-throw line to seal Detroit's win. Tobias Harris scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Duren had 12 points and 13 boards for the Pistons, who host game three on Thursday. 'Feels good to represent the city like we did tonight,' Cunningham said. 'It's something that the city's been waiting on a long time, so we feel good about it and we're ready to get back to the crib and perform in front of them.' Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau was irked at what he considered inconsistent officiating, noting that the Pistons went to the free-throw line 34 times to the Knicks' 19. 'If Cunningham's driving and there's marginal contact and he's getting to the line, then Jalen (Brunson) deserves to be getting to the line,' Thibodeau said. – Vintage Leonard – It was another pulsating contest in Denver, where the Clippers bounced back from a narrow game-one overtime defeat thanks to a vintage performance from Leonard — an NBA champion in 2014 and 2019 who has been hindered by injury in recent seasons. Leonard set the tone early, making nine of his 10 shots in the first half and sending the Clippers into halftime up 55-52 with a buzzer-beating three-pointer. In a game that featured 18 lead changes, the Nuggets tied it at 100-100 with 2:07 to play on a three-pointer by Murray. But Norman Powell came up with a steal and drained a three-pointer and Leonard made a jump shot to put the Clippers up 105-102. Leonard stole a Jokic pass with 37.3 seconds left and Los Angeles held on as Christian Braun and Jokic missed in the waning seconds. 'I just kept going and stayed in the zone,' Leonard said. 'I didn't worry about what shots were making or missing. I just kept shooting.'
