PETALING JAYA: Allianz Malaysia Bhd recorded insurance revenue of RM1.53 billion for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025, an increase of 14.3% over the RM1.34 billion recorded in the same quarter a year ago.
Gross written premiums (GWP) for the first three months of the year rose to RM2.01 billion from RM1.90 billion the year before. The group's total assets as at March 31, 2025 stood at RM28.59 billion compared to RM28.49 billion as at Dec 31, 2024.
'We started the year strong, sustaining the momentum from the previous year with both our life and general subsidiaries growing strongly. Going into the second quarter and beyond, we remain focused on driving key initiatives to fulfil the needs of our customers and agents, while staying agile and adaptable in growing the business. We are also constantly striving to be the trusted partner for protecting and growing our customers' most valuable assets,' said Allianz Malaysia CEO Sean Wang.
The general insurance subsidiary of the group, Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Bhd, recorded RM978 million in GWP for the quarter in focus, reflecting a 10.6% increase from RM884.6 million a year earlier. The general insurance segment posted insurance revenue of RM862.5 million in the first three months of 2025, an increase of 14.3% from RM754.8 million the year before. Profit before tax (PBT) stood at RM159.7 million, up 20.7% from RM132.3 million recorded the year prior.
Allianz General maintained its pole position in the industry with a market share of 14.9%, mainly driven by strong motor and commercial growth. Combined ratio for the first quarter of 2025 improved to 85.8%, compared to 87% in the same quarter last year.
'We saw robust growth in our motor and commercial business over the January to March 2025 period, which strengthened our market leadership and deepened our commitment towards providing the best services to our customers,' said Wang, who is also CEO of Allianz General.
The group's life insurance subsidiary, Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia Bhd, saw GWP grow to RM1.03 billion in the first quarter of 2025, from RM1.02 billion a year ago. Annualised new premiums came in at RM213.5 million for the quarter in review, following the RM234.8 million posted in the previous year. Gay Chinese couple fulfil wedding dream in 'freer' Thailand

Thailand ranks high on recent indexes measuring public attitudes towards LGBTQ people. -- PHOTO: AFP PATTAYA, Thailand (AFP): When Wang Zengyi, 41, and Song Jihan, 29, first met at a friend's dinner party in China, it was love at first sight. "I thought he was handsome and pure," says Wang. "Our love has deepened over time." Nearly three years later, the gay Chinese couple are getting married in Thailand, which became Asia's largest nation to legalise same-sex marriage earlier this year -- including for foreign couples. They are among the first Chinese LGBTQ pairs to tie the knot in the Sout-East Asian country as it celebrates its first Pride since the law's passage. "Thailand is a freer country," said Wang after they signed their marriage certificate at a Bangkok registry office. "It's also more inclusive to our community." He believes they are the first gay Chinese couple to host a full wedding ceremony in Thailand, but that "gradually" more will follow in their footsteps. "I think we are unique so far... but I hope we can have a positive influence." They enlisted the help of an agent and a consultant to organise the wedding and paperwork to finally make their dream come true. - Bureaucratic hurdles - Chinese authorities decriminalised homosexuality in 1997, but same-sex marriage is not legal and social stigma is widespread. Despite a period of relative relaxation in the 2000s to mid-2010s, rights groups say recent years have seen a crackdown on the community's spaces and freedom of expression. Real estate agent Owen Zhu has a property business in Thailand that also helps gay Chinese couples come to Thailand to get married. Zhu, 40, said that the biggest difficulties couples like Wang and Song face are linked to paperwork, as well as prejudice. It is difficult for Chinese LGBTQ individuals to obtain the certificate of single status required by Thailand proving that they are not married, he told AFP. China also does not recognise same-sex marriages registered abroad. But Zhu believes that despite China's bureaucratic hurdles, there will be a rise in the number of Chinese couples looking to wed and even live long-term in Thailand. "There is large market demand from many Chinese same-sex couples," he says. "Thailand is a particularly tempting place, allowing freedom to do things not possible in China, like holding hands or kissing in public with a partner. In China, they may not dare do such things." Zhu says the simple act of signing a marriage document is deeply meaningful for his clients. "Though this piece of paper might not be recognised in China, in their hearts, they see it as recognition and acceptance from the world," he says. - Love ballads, vows - More than 30 countries have legalised marriage for all since the Netherlands became the first to allow same-sex unions in 2001. Thailand was the third place in Asia after Taiwan and Nepal. The kingdom ranks high on recent indexes measuring public attitudes towards LGBTQ people, but matching legal structures were absent before it passed the same-sex marriage bill in a historic parliamentary vote last June. Thousands of couples across the kingdom tied the knot in a mass wedding the day same-sex unions became legal in January this year. Chris Yan, a legal consultant who helped Wang and Song navigate Thai administration to formalise their partnership, says the process for foreigners to register their marriage in Thailand is fairly smooth as long as they can provide the necessary documents. "I believe it is more advanced than many other countries, since the cost in Thailand is quite low," he says. "They can stay in the country for longer and processing the documents is quicker." Surrounded by dozens of close friends and their ring-bearing small fluffy dog, Wang and Song sing love ballads to each other on a sandy Pattaya beach before tearfully reading their wedding vows. They will return home to China after their honeymoon, but hope to eventually retire in Thailand. Life is short, is the message they have for other couples like them. Wang said: "Be with the one you want to be with." - AFP

Chinese firm offers scholarships to local students in W. Uganda

KAMPALA, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has awarded scholarships to 300 top-performing students in western Uganda's oil region to further their education. At the 2025 Best Performers Awards ceremony held at the Hoima District headquarters on Friday, the oil giant announced that the winners, who performed well on last year's national exams, are in different categories, including primary, secondary, and university-bound students. Six students with disabilities were also awarded. According to a CNOOC press release shared here on Saturday, the winners are from Hoima District and Kikuube District. They received cash prizes and certificates of recognition for their achievement. Wang Jufeng, vice president of CNOOC Uganda Limited, said the annual program aims to invest in youth to shape Uganda's future. "We believe that education is the key to a better future. That is why we started this Best Performers Awards program. Since 2013, we have supported 1,448 students through this initiative," Wang said. He said the company is also implementing initiatives that help schools by donating books, furniture, and other learning materials. "Some students from Hoima and Kikuube have received international scholarships, and at the moment, we have Musinguzi Ronald from Kikuube and Amanya Jean Remmy in China University of Petroleum, studying petroleum engineering under full sponsorship from CNOOC Uganda Limited," he added. He said these initiatives will help students gain knowledge and grow into strong, confident adults who will contribute positively to the development of Uganda. CNOOC is currently managing the Kingfisher Oil Field in western Uganda, where commercial oil drilling is underway. Uganda discovered 6.5 billion barrels of oil in 2006, with 1.4 billion barrels deemed commercially viable, according to the country's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.

Rolls-Royce to operate new aero engine facility in Beijing

Airbus showcases the model of its latest passenger aircraft at the 7th China International Import Expo in Shanghai in November. YIN LIQIN/CHINA NEWS SERVICE BEIJING: Rolls-Royce's first aero engine maintenance, repair and overhaul joint venture in the Chinese mainland is on track to begin operations by the end of 2025, said a senior executive of the British aircraft engine manufacturer. The new facility in the northeastern suburbs of Beijing marks the aero engine giant's significant expansion in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, indicating the company's optimism about the Chinese market and its recognition of the country's supply chain. Beijing Aero Engine Services Ltd, a JV with Air China, is set to initially service Trent 700 engines for Airbus A330 aircraft before expanding to Trent XWB and Trent 1000 engines for Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft, respectively, said Troy Wang, executive vice-president for Greater China at Rolls-Royce, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency. "At its full capacity, which is expected to be achieved in the mid-2030s, BAESL will be able to support up to 250 shop visits per year," said Wang. The facility, which will employ up to 800 people at full capacity, represents a strategic growth initiative in China, Rolls-Royce's third-largest single-country market globally by revenue. Prior to BAESL, Rolls-Royce has been servicing Chinese mainland customers through its global MRO network, including HAESL in Hong Kong, which was established in 1997. The BAESL project is the latest in a series of investments by Rolls-Royce in China, including five JVs with Chinese partners. According to a report released by Aviation Industry Corporation of China, China's aviation sector is projected to require over 8,200 new passenger aircraft by 2043 to meet growing demand, including more than 1,500 wide-body jets. "China is not only a market, but also an important part of our supply chain," said Wang. He highlighted that Rolls-Royce has built a wide network of over 50 suppliers across the country, which manufacture key engine components and parts while "embedding digital and automation innovation capability". BAESL is being built as a "world-leading digitally enabled aero engine repair and overhaul shop" incorporating the latest digital technology. The JV is already partnering with leading digital solution providers in China to develop AI-enabled capabilities. China's aviation sector has shown remarkable resilience and growth potential despite global economic uncertainties as its industrial ecosystem continues to demonstrate competitiveness in "cost, quality and lead time", Wang said. Last year, Rolls-Royce expanded its JV in China with Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co Ltd, a Chinese internal combustion engine manufacturer, to address the country's fast-growing market. - China Daily/ANN
