Jamie George summoned by Lions after Luke Cowan-Dickie suffers head injury

Rhyl Journal12-07-2025
Hooker Cowan-Dickie appeared to be knocked out in Saturday's 48-0 win against an AUNZ Invitational XV at Adelaide Oval and left the field in the medical cart with his head in a supportive brace.
He faces a spell on the sidelines and Saracens front-rower George, appointed co-captain for England's ongoing summer tour to Argentina and the United States, will fly to Australia for his third Lions tour having featured in New Zealand in 2017 and South Africa in 2021.

A brief Lions statement read: '(George) will join up with head coach Andy Farrell's squad in Brisbane next week.
'George, Lion number 819, was a tourist in 2017 and 2021. He also trained with the squad in Portugal and Dublin ahead of the Qatar Airways Lions Men's Series Australia 2025.'
Garry Ringrose is unavailable for next Saturday's first Test against Australia after Farrell confirmed he was struggling with concussion.
Ringrose suffered a head injury in Wednesday's victory over the ACT Brumbies and faces a minimum 12-day stand down period, preventing him from taking part in the series opener in Brisbane.
'Garry had a delayed reaction. He had headaches for a day and it carried on for the next day so he went through concussion protocols and failed those,' Farrell said.
'Unfortunately for him and for us he's 12 days so that puts him out of the first Test and back in for the midweek game before the second Test (against First Nations and Pasifika XV on July 22).
'You don't mess around with these things and it is unfortunate for him and everyone else. He's in good spirits anyway so we crack on.'
Cowan-Dickie took a heavy blow to the head in Saturday's win after being hit by Lukhan Salakaia-Loto's knee, shortly before half-time.
The England front-rower later waved to fans as he walked around the pitch but he is now likely to face a spell out that opened the door for 34-year-old George.

Owen Farrell produced an eye-catching 31 minutes in the first appearance of his fourth Lions tour but Andy Farrell limited his praise of his son to: 'He did OK, as did many others.'
Owen Farrell slotted in at inside centre and worked well alongside fly-half Marcus Smith, providing direction and an extra creative spark through his passing and kicking that led to two tries.
Huw Jones is now favourite to start against the Wallabies at outside centre following Ringrose's concussion and he was the Lions' most dangerous player until he was replaced by Farrell.
He gelled well with Scotland midfield partner Sione Tuipulotu and Farrell said: 'Huw and Sione were very good. We've got nice back-up there.'
Bundee Aki and Ringrose looked poised to start the first Test in the centres but the Lions could choose to stick with established national combinations, so Ringrose's misfortune might see Tuipulotu and Jones selected as a pair.
'Who knows which way we would have gone because it is true what we said about leaving it open,' Farrell said.
'I know people think we had a fixed mind after Wednesday's game against the Brumbies but that's not the truth.
'We will sit down and assess that game and then we will have a tough task in picking what's going to be a good Test side to take on Australia in the first game.'

EXCLUSIVE Tennis at the Australian Open, a visit to Ramsey Street... and Roar & Uncut tracks down James Haskell in the pool during the Lions' tour

Nik and Kev's Lions tour adventure continued as they arrived in Melbourne for the crescendo moment of the series. They touched down in Victoria where they were reunited with some old friends to show them the city that prides itself on being every bit different. With hidden gems around every corner, they ended up stepping out of the rugby bubble to experience street art, coffee culture and the state's vibrant multi-culture. Here is what the guys got up to in the fifth episode of Roar & Uncut, in association with Dr Squatch. MONDAY It was an early start for the Wallabies ' press conference at the Crowne Plaza Melbourne by IHG. As the official tour partners, IHG decked out the riverside hotel with paraphernalia ahead of the big match, so we checked out their pop-up bar before heading out of town to Ramsay Street. The Neighbours set brought back a few teenage memories, visiting the houses that played out so many storylines for the likes of the Bishops and the Kennedies. TUESDAY All kitted up, we made tracks to the iconic blue tennis courts that host the Australian Open. Kev prides himself on being the Essex schoolboys champion at Under 15 level so we brought Mail Sport columnist Dan Biggar along to step up the competition. Dan was a professional sportsman until last month and his athleticism shone through, wiping the court with both of us to win the inaugural Dr Squatch trophy. After the match, we stopped off at Proud Mary, which was recently named in the top 10 coffee shops in the world, to fuel up before the Lions match against the Pasifika XV. WEDNESDAY We boarded a boat up the river for a memorable tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It is a colossus of an arena, with 100,024 seats that host concerts, AFL, cricket and more. Damien Fleming, Australia's fast bowler from the 1990s, gave the travelling media a private tour, joining us for lunch in the Long Room. Come Christmas, the iconic stadium will be packed to its old rafters for the upcoming Ashes series. THURSDAY After Andy Farrell and Joe Schmidt named their teams for the second Test, we visited the Lightscape exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens. It was an immersive display featuring dozens of illuminations, strolling through floral canopies that offered an enchanting escape from the day-to-day touring schedule. And then it was back to the MCG, where the Hawks were hosting Carlton in an all-Victorian AFL derby. FRIDAY Our hotel, the voco Melbourne Central by IHG, was situated in the heart of the action. We were surrounded by the bright lights of China Town, vibrant street art and independent outlets on every corner. James Haskell and Mike Tindall were also staying in our hotel, as part of their work with the The Good, The Bad & The Rugby. We caught up with Haskell in the hotel's skyline swimming pool, where he shared a few hilarious anecdotes from his rugby career. SATURDAY Match day in Melbourne, but not before some fish and chips down on the beach in St Kilda. We boarded the city's free tram service for a hit of sea air, enjoying the winter coastline. Then it was back to the MCG to join more than 90,000 supporters for the series-defining Test. Kev was a guest of Qatar Airways in their hospitality area, while Nik was sat up in the media tribune to report on a thrilling Lions victory for the ages. Roar & Uncut comes to you in association with Dr Squatch, ensuring Nik and Kev are the best-smelling guys on tour.

George Russell facing anxious wait to discover if he has Mercedes seat next year

Max Verstappen's break clause from his Red Bull contract can no longer be activated after his fourth-placed finish at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix ensured the Dutchman will not be lower than third in the world championship when the sport enters its mid-season shutdown. Mercedes have made little secret of their desire to sign the four-time world champion. As it stands, Russell – who despite a series of impressive performances this year – is without a deal for 2026. Lights, camera, action 🎬 Ready to go racing in Hungary! 🇭🇺 — Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) July 28, 2025 Mercedes, however, would now be forced to buy Verstappen out of his Red Bull contract which runs until 2028 – and that could accelerate their decision to announce Russell will be retained. But the PA news agency has been told by a source there are no plans for an official update on the British driver's future prior to Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. A three-week break follows before the next round in the Netherlands on August 31. Despite the continued speculation surrounding suggestions Verstappen could trade Red Bull for Mercedes, those close to the Russell camp have indicated for a number of weeks the 27-year-old is extremely confident of striking a contract extension. And it would appear highly unlikely that a new deal with Mercedes will not be finalised. Russell finished fifth on Sunday but Mercedes endured a difficult weekend in the Ardennes. Russell's rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli's dismal run of form continued after he crossed the line in 16th. The 18-year-old has scored points in just one of his last seven appearances. He was close to tears after qualifying on Saturday, admitting he was struggling with his confidence. That prompted a visit from Lewis Hamilton to the Mercedes motorhome ahead of Sunday's race to offer the driver who replaced him some words of encouragement. Hamilton started in the pit lane and drove from 18th to seventh but Antonelli – who also begun the rain-hit race from the pits – laboured and finished 52 seconds behind team-mate Russell. Russell has scored 157 points to Antonelli's 63 after 13 of the 24 rounds. Mercedes are third in the constuctors' standings, 296 points adrift of McLaren.

Huw Jones admitted he had been riding an emotional rollercoaster, culminating in the British and Irish Lions clinching a series victory over Australia. Andy Farrell's men have returned to Sydney intent on becoming the first Lions team to complete a Test whitewash since the 1927 visit to Argentina – an aspiration made possible by Saturday's gripping 29-26 triumph in Melbourne. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Jones was destined to miss one of the greatest matches in the tourists' storied history after initially being left out of the starting XV, despite having impressed in the Suncorp Stadium opener. (Photo by WILLIAM WEST/AFP via Getty Images) But having been dropped for Garry Ringrose, he was reinstated at outside centre when the Ireland star self-reported a return of the concussion symptoms that had forced him to miss the first Test. 'It was a pretty mental week. I had the initial disappointment of not being in the squad on the Tuesday,' Jones said. 'I had a chat with Andy and I was gutted. I got over that and was ready to get behind the boys. 'And then on Thursday we trained and Garry – to be fair to him – said his head just wasn't right. I think he may have got a knock in the session and went to the doctor. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'That's brave. And pulling yourself out as well. It was at the end of training, I had no idea that he was struggling. Garry Ringrose self-reported concussions symptoms to rule himself out of the British & Irish Lions Test win over Australia on Saturday. (Photo by) 'I chatted to Garry afterwards and he was emotional. Its one of those….you think 'I'll be all right' but if it's bad, it's bad. 'But like people have said, it's just a game. Your head's very important, you only get one brain and all that. 'If he felt the need to say that he was struggling, then fair play to him. I just hope that he gets over it very quickly. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I was gutted for him because he deserved to play and I know he would have been unbelievable. Sometimes that's rugby and that's sport. 'So I got a nod after that session. I was ready to step in and luckily I'd run some of the plays on Tuesday, so I was ready to go and got the job done.' Jones played a key part in the Lions' comeback from 18 points down after showing his strength to power over just before half-time, but it was Hugo Keenan's dashing finish with 51 seconds left that ignited the celebrations. Remarkably, Keenan's try was the first time the Lions had led in the second Test. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'What a game. Unbelievable. We made it hard for ourselves, ill-discipline and all that, but came back at the end and Hugo….what a finish. It was a good feeling,' Jones said. 'It's a cliche, but we never stopped believing, even at half-time. Even if we'd been further down, we still had the belief that we'd go on and win.' Farrell has given his squad two days off to celebrate Saturday's achievement with the players being joined by their friends and family.
