KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested five individuals suspected of embezzling RM26 million in public donations from a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
Sources said the five suspects include the NGO's chairman, secretary, treasurer and financial officer.
They were detained in "Ops Serantau", an operation conducted by the Selangor MACC across several locations in Selangor, Melaka and Penang from last Thursday.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days — four until Wednesday and the fifth until Thursday.
"The money was transferred to their personal accounts and used to purchase jewellery, cars, land, houses and even cryptocurrency.
"They are also believed to have diverted organisational funds into personal accounts to provide loans to staff and siphoned surplus funds from a humanitarian well-building project in Syria for personal use," a source told Bernama.
The source added that the misappropriation of public donations is believed to have been ongoing since 2015.
Meanwhile, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and disclosed that assets worth over RM8 million had been seized or frozen.
"Among the seized items are jewellery valued at approximately RM100,000, over RM1 million in cash, cryptocurrency accounts worth around RM650,000, and four houses estimated at more than RM1.4 million.

PLKN 3.0 Absentees Under Scrutiny, May Face Legal Action

MELAKA, June 16 (Bernama) -- The National Service Training Department (JLKN) is currently assessing and reviewing the reasons given by candidates who did not turn up for the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 Series 2 of 2025, which kicked off on May 11. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said a report on this matter will be presented to the ministry soon for further action, as attendance for selected individuals in the second series is mandatory. "Yes, there are indeed several (individuals) who did not show up, and at present, we are receiving and reviewing all the reports in detail regarding their reasons for absence. "JLKN will present the findings to the Ministry of Defence soon. Essentially, this process is to raise awareness that once selected, it is mandatory for them to register, and we have provisions under the law to act on this," he told a press conference after officiating the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) award ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh here today. He said a review of the reasons is currently underway, as trainees' attendance is governed by Section 18(1) of the National Service Training Act 2003 (Act 628) and that selected individuals who failed to attend without a valid excuse may face legal consequences, including a fine of up to RM3,000, imprisonment for a maximum of six months, or both. It was previously reported that 344 PLKN 3.0, Series 2/2025 trainees had reported for 45 days of training between May 11 and June 24. Out of this number, 206 male trainees and 138 female trainees reported at Rejimen 505 (AW) Camp, Force 136 Camp in Pekan, Pahang, and Rejimen 515 (AW) Camp, Jalan Buku Lima, Kuala Lumpur. "So far, the main reasons for trainee absences that we have received are related to health, employment, and furthering studies. We are trying to improve related aspects to ensure 100 per cent attendance for every session of the programme," he said. At the ceremony earlier, 1,000 veterans from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), along with widows and heirs of veterans from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, were presented with the PJM. The award honours the bravery and sacrifice of military personnel in fulfilling their duties to the nation.

Ganja resembling belacan, chocolate, and keropok lekor seized

KANGAR: Belacan, chocolate bars and keropok lekor — these familiar favourites turned out to be a cover for a pungent plot here. The drugs, valued at RM9,238, were found in the possession of a 21-year-old Thai national who was arrested while attempting to board the Electric Train Service (ETS) heading south from Bukit Keteri Railway Station. Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the incident took place at Bukit Keteri railway station after police received information regarding a Thai man carrying cannabis who was planning to board the ETS. "Based on the information received, our personnel from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Perlis police contingent headquarters went to the station and successfully identified the 21-year-old suspect. "The man was believed to be waiting for the ETS heading south, and upon inspecting the backpack he was carrying, we found 27 plastic packets containing green plant material suspected to be cannabis, weighing 2.98 kilogrammes and valued at RM9,238," he said. Muhammad said preliminary investigations revealed the suspect was paid more than RM1,000 by the syndicate to deliver the cannabis via the ETS. "The cannabis was shaped and packaged to resemble shrimp paste, chocolate bars, and raw 'keropok lekor' in an attempt to fool the authorities during inspections. "The supply is believed to have been sourced from a neighbouring country, with Perlis used as a transit point before being distributed or sold in southern states. "The suspect's modus operandi involved delivering drug supplies from Thailand into the country on demand, for a fee of RM1,500," he said. Following this, police arrested another suspect, a 25-year-old local man in Alor Setar, who is also believed to be involved in the drug distribution syndicate. "Initial drug screening on the main suspect found him positive for methamphetamine. A background check revealed he has four prior criminal records related to drug offences. "The total amount of drugs seized in this case could serve approximately 29,870 drug addicts," he said. Muhammad said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until this Thursday to assist with investigations.
