RM1.5 mln allocated for Pantai Siring erosion project in Melaka
JASIN: The Federal Government has allocated RM1.5 million to address coastal erosion at Pantai Siring in Pulai, Melaka, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID). The project involves constructing a 120-metre rock revetment, set to begin in October and complete by year-end. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh stated that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate erosion, classified as moderate under the 2024 Integrated Shoreline Management Plan (ISMP). 'Pantai Siring currently experiences an erosion rate of 3.7 metres per year, down from 6.5 metres in 2015. However, three barrier collapses have occurred since September 2024, the latest on June 5,' he said during a site visit. The high tide phenomenon has also affected nearby shrimp farms and agricultural land, disrupting local livelihoods. Temporary measures, including jumbo bags and mangrove piling, were implemented at a cost of RM100,000. 'The state welcomes this allocation and remains committed to protecting Melaka's coastline for sustainability and economic stability,' Ab Rauf added. - Bernama

Apologise, Nga tells critics who labelled MyKiosk project a white elephant
KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has demanded that critics of the ministry's MyKiosk initiative issue an apology. He made the call after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) found no elements of corruption or abuse of power in the project. "There were allegations that this was a white elephant project. Because of that, the ministry took the initiative to invite the MACC to investigate. When the anti-graft body did not come, we went to them. "We provided all the necessary documents for the MACC to conduct a thorough investigation. Last week, the MACC issued a statement confirming there was no abuse of power, no criminal elements, and no corruption. So, to those who threw stones, do not now hide your hands. "On behalf of all the ministry's staff who have worked tirelessly to serve the people, I demand that those who made baseless accusations apologise. "We believe the sacrifices of civil servants must be respected, not met with unfounded allegations," he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said this when responding to a question from Onn Abu Bakar (PH–Batu Pahat), who inquired about the implementation statistics of the MyKiosk 2.0 programme. Meanwhile, Nga said that in 2023, an allocation of RM50 million under the MyKiosk@KPKT programme was used to provide 3,189 kiosk units. Last year, RM100 million was allocated for MyKiosk 2.0, which involved the construction of 4,054 new kiosk units. "In line with the ministry's commitment to continuous improvement based on traders' feedback, the design specifications for MyKiosk 2.0 have been modified to be more environmentally sustainable and equipped with better facilities, without any increase in rental rates. "As of July this year, the occupancy rate for MyKiosk@KPKT (2023) stands at 2,926 units (91.75 per cent), while MyKiosk 2.0 (2024) has reached 3,518 units (86.78 per cent)." In another development, Nga said that a traffic light system will be implemented to evaluate the performance of local authorities. "I admit that there have been some shortcomings in implementation, which is why this year we are introducing reforms through a traffic light system. Local councils will be evaluated based on this system. "If the indicator is green, it means excellent performance and their allocation will be increased. If it is yellow, the allocation will be reviewed. If it is red, the allocation will be cancelled," he said.

RM45 million monthly savings since egg subsidy slashed, says minister
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: Agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu said the supply of chicken eggs is currently stable and that prices remain reasonable. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The government is estimated to have saved RM45 million a month following the reduction of egg subsidies which took effect on May 1, said agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu. He told the Dewan Rakyat that the subsidy cut would result in savings of up to RM135 million over a three-month period before the full termination of the subsidy on Aug 1. He was responding to a question from Sheikh Puzi Sheikh Ali (BN-Pekan) about the savings from the reduced subsidy spending and its impact on the egg market and overall cost of living. Mohamad, known as Mat Sabu, said the supply of chicken eggs was stable and that prices remained reasonable. In July alone, egg production is expected to reach 1.75 billion eggs, while domestic consumption is estimated at 1.06 billion, he said. 'This indicates a surplus of 0.69 billion eggs, some of which will be exported,' he added. Mohamad said that to ensure continued stability in egg supply and pricing, his ministry, together with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, would closely monitor the situation. He added that the savings from the reduced subsidy spending would allow the government to redirect funds towards initiatives and programmes that provide direct benefits for the people. In April, the agriculture and food security ministry announced its decision to end the subsidy after industry players committed to ensuring a stable and sufficient egg supply, following the stabilisation of production costs. In June 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government had decided to reduce the retail price of grade A, B and C eggs nationwide by three sen. This subsidy scheme involved an expenditure of RM100 million. The government initially planned to float egg prices in July 2023, but postponed the move due to concerns about potential price increases and the impact on consumers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MACC to call up 20 more witnesses in data centre graft case
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to record statements from 20 witnesses to assist in the corruption case involving the procurement of a data centre construction project tender in Johor worth approximately RM180mil. MACC Investigation Division senior director Datuk Zainul Darus said that, so far, they have recorded statements from 12 individuals in connection with the case. He said the three suspects – the project manager of a construction company and two company directors – arrested by MACC are still under remand, while a female suspect was released on Sunday after her remand order ended. 'So far, there have been no new arrests in this case,' he said yesterday, Bernama reported. The media previously reported that a project manager detained for the corruption case was willing to burn almost RM1mil in cash to destroy evidence during an MACC raid on July 17. According to sources, during the raid conducted at his home in Petaling Jaya, a team of officers found RM100 banknotes totalling almost RM1mil in flames. Following a thorough inspection of the home, the MACC also found cash totalling approximately RM7.5mil stored in several boxes, three Rolex, Omega and Cartier watches, as well as jewellery such as rings and gold coins.
