Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja continues to speak out for Palestine, urges action

Express Tribune18-07-2025
Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has once again raised his voice in support of Palestine, highlighting the ongoing violence and its devastating impact on children.
The Test cricket star shared a heart-wrenching video on social media showing injured Palestinian children, condemning the atrocities in Gaza.
Known for his advocacy on humanitarian issues, Khawaja's post stressed the continued suffering of innocent civilians, especially children. He urged people not to ignore the violence, sharing UNICEF's description of the situation as 'a graveyard for children.'
'Hard to watch... Imagine living it,' Khawaja wrote, expressing his shock at the ongoing killings, starvation, and attacks on aid points.

He added, 'I will keep saying it—if this ever becomes normal for us, we are truly lost. Don't stop speaking up. Always stand for humanity, for equality, for a better tomorrow.'
This follows Khawaja's earlier condemnation of the deaths of over 130 Palestinian children in a single day, where he highlighted the lack of global outrage. "These kids have names and families, just like you," he stated.
Khawaja, born in Pakistan and a practicing Muslim, has consistently used his platform to oppose the violence in Gaza.
During Australia's 2023 Test series, he attempted a silent protest with messages on his shoes, but was reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC), leading him to wear a black armband instead.
Khawaja criticised the ICC for its inconsistent rule enforcement, saying, "Other guys that have religious things on their equipment, under the ICC guidelines, that's not technically allowed, but the ICC never says anything on that."

Through his continued advocacy, Khawaja remains a vocal critic of the violence in Gaza, urging the world to not normalise such brutality.

Israel will let foreign countries drop aid into Gaza, Israel army radio says 'Look, he's a different kind of a guy. He's okay. He's a team player, pretty much. Joe Root becomes third highest run-scorer in Test cricket history

England's Joe Root moved into third place on the all-time list of Test run-scorers on Friday, surpassing legends Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis during the fourth Rothesay Test against India at Old Trafford. The 34-year-old Yorkshireman passed Dravid's total of 13,288 runs after reaching 30 on the third morning in Manchester. Two deliveries later, he edged past Kallis' tally of 13,289 to become the third-highest scorer in Test history, behind only Australia's Ricky Ponting and India's Sachin Tendulkar. Root, who is already England's leading run-scorer in Test and one-day international cricket, now sits on 13,259 career Test runs from 156 matches. His Test average currently stands at 50.80, with 37 centuries and 66 fifties. While Ponting's total of 13,378 runs is within reach - Root would need to score 120 in this innings to overtake the Australian - Tendulkar's long-standing world record of 15,921 remains a distant target. Root eclipsed Sir Alastair Cook's England Test record of 12,472 runs in December 2024 during the tour of Pakistan. He also became England's all-time top scorer in one-day internationals last month, overtaking former captain Eoin Morgan. His ascent to third place further cements his status as one of the most consistent batters of the modern era, and one of the finest ever to don the Three Lions in Test cricket. The updated top five Test run-scorers now stand as follows: Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) Ricky Ponting (13,378) Joe Root (13,322 and counting) Jacques Kallis (13,289) Rahul Dravid (13,288) Root made his Test debut in 2012 and has been a cornerstone of England's batting order ever since, captaining the side from 2017 to 2022.

Pakistan condemns Israeli attempt to assert sovereignty over Occupied West Bank

Pakistan unequivocally condemned on Friday the Israeli parliament's unlawful attempt to assert 'sovereignty' over the Occupied West Bank. 'This deplorable act constitutes a grave violation of international law and reflects Israel's persistent disregard for Palestinian rights and established international norms,' the Foreign Office (FO) said in a press release today. The FO said that such deliberate and provocative actions highlight the occupying power's systematic attempts to undermine efforts for peace and entrench its illegal occupation. 'These unilateral measures represent a dangerous escalation that jeopardizes regional stability and prospects for a just and lasting settlement.' Violence has surged in the West Bank since the beginning of the war in Gaza, sparked by an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023. At least 960 Palestinians – including militants and civilians – have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian Authority data. In the same time period, at least 36 Israelis – including civilians and security forces – have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations there, according to official Israeli figures. Moreover, the FO, in its press release urged the international community to take swift and decisive action to hold Israel accountable for its violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions and international humanitarian law. These measures will neither be recognized nor alter the internationally acknowledged status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the FO said. 'Pakistan reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination. We steadfastly advocate for the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and viable Palestinian state based on the pre-June 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.'
