Man jailed over Blackpool hotelier's 'brutal' murder

Yahoo22-05-2025

A man who stabbed a hotelier in a "frenzied attack" before stealing from him has been jailed.
Jurors found 51-year-old Blackpool man Adam Saunders guilty of murdering Kevin Price, who was supposedly his friend, at his hotel in the seaside town on Springfield Road on 7 November.
Saunders had messaged him earlier that day asking if he fancied some company before the 59-year-old's body was found with 56 stab wounds, Lancashire Police said.
Saunders, of no fixed address, was handed a life sentence and told he must serve at least 31 years in jail at Preston Crown Court.
Mr Price was last seen alive on the evening of 7 November, returning to the Garfield Hotel.
A police spokesman said Mr Price had responded to Saunders' offer of company by asking him return a bag he had stolen containing one of the hotelier's bank cards.
The court heard Saunders had gone to the hotel that night and brutally killed him.
Saunders left then returned to hotel and stole items including a television, and used Mr Price's bank card to buy mobile phones and withdraw cash, the police spokesman said,
Whilst doing this, Saunders even wore his victim's clothes.
Two days after murdering him, Saunders booked a stay at a local hotel, where he boasted about having access to money from a friend's credit card.
A friend of Mr Price's reported him missing on 10 November after not having heard from him for a few days.
Officers found the hotelier's body in his property with extensive injuries.
A post-mortem found Mr Price had been stabbed 56 times and had significant injuries to his neck, chest and back, along with other stab injuries across his body.
Saunders, who denied murder but admitted theft, was sentenced to one month in prison to run concurrently.
In a victim impact statement, Mr Price's sister, Diane, said: "Kevin was the most thoughtful, kind, warm and loving person anybody could wish to meet.
"I loved him so dearly and still do. I hold him in my heart, and I always will. He was always in my thoughts when he was alive as he is in death."
She said listening to Saunders at the trial she was "sickened hearing all his lies knowing full well what disgusting and inhumane things he did to our Kevin".
"I am truly devastated by what's happened, and I will always love my brother dearly. "He will never be forgotten by all those that loved him. RIP Kevin."
Det Ch Insp Simon Pritchard said after sentencing he hope Mr Price' family and friends could now get some form of closure after his "horrific and inhumane death".
He said Saunders abused their friendship and stole his belongings while Kevin "lay lifeless in the home".

‘Out of hand': Inside missing girl's flat

New images of the house where missing teenager Pheobe Bishop resided before her disappearance reveal the squalor she was living in. Pheobe was living with two housemates – James Wood and Tamika Bromley – at a property in Gin Gin before her disappearance on May 15. One woman said junk accumulating at the property had gotten 'out of hand' in recent months. People in town had complained on local Facebook groups about dogs at the Millen St house barking and howling more than usual. The same woman told NewsWire she had heard yelling and seen Pheobe walking around town, where she 'always seemed happy'. 'Each week there was more junk coming out,' the woman said of the house, clarifying she never felt unsafe close by. The quiet street was mostly deserted on Thursday, save for several media crews. Pictures from the house depict its derelict state, with the front lawn still strewn with rubbish weeks after the police cordoned off the property. Part of the police tape had fallen away. A bus is parked outside of the house – carrying a crudely-drawn sign saying 'Let it Ride' – with its door open but most of its curtains drawn shut. Photos inside capture junk piled up to the roof. A computer chair is seen blocking the doors while the shelves, sides and floors are littered with containers, eskies, cooking lids and rubbish. Some are piled into a cabinet which has been crammed onto the bus. Pheobe was last seen by her housemates, Mr Wood and Ms Bromley, who drove her to Bundaberg Airport from their home in Gin Gin on May 15. Mr Wood, 34, was taken into police custody in Bundaberg on Wednesday and assisted police with inquiries. 'Detectives are continuing to run through several lines of inquiry as investigations continue and will conduct physical searches when required,' a police spokesman told NewsWire. 'Police are continuing to appeal for any information about Pheobe's whereabouts. 'For investigative reasons, there is no further information available.' Searches for the 17-year-old spanned her home in Gin Gin near Bundaberg, and the Good Night Scrub National Park. Police and State Emergency Services spent five days searching the national park for any sign of the missing teen, before that operation was suspended on May 28. Police on Wednesday announced they had called off all physical searches for Pheobe. 'There are currently no physical searches for Pheobe at this stage, however physical searches will happen as needed and as information is provided,' the spokesman told NewsWire. 'Investigations are ongoing and police are continuing to run out several lines of inquiry.' More to come.

Old Pakistan airport fire clip misrepresented as recent

"Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore, Pakistan is burning after a missile battery of Air Defence System exploded during installation," reads a Facebook post on April 26, 2025. "All Services have been suspended at Lahore airport & Pakistan Army has taken control," it went on to say, adding "14 Pakistani soldiers" died in the incident. It also shares a video showing a building filled with smoke as a crowd looks on, and Bengali-language text that largely repeats the false claim. The claim surfaced days after gunmen killed 26 people in an attack on tourists in Pahalgam in India-administered Kashmir on April 22, which New Delhi blames on its neighbour. Islamabad denies the charge (archived link). Four days of tense fighting broke out between the nuclear-armed foes in May -- claiming over 70 lives on both sides -- before they agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire (archived link). The false post was shared elsewhere on Facebook, with comments indicating some users believed the claim to be true. A comment reads, "This is only for the airport now, soon it will be for the whole of Pakistan." "Very well done, let it spread all over Pakistan now," reads another comment. But a reverse image search on Google using keyframes shows the video was uploaded to YouTube on May 9, 2024 (archived link). "Massive fire at Lahore Airport," the video's caption reads. "Investigation suggests that a short circuit was the cause of the fire." Further searches found the columns of smoke next to a sign in the false clip can also be seen at the 14th-second mark in a video report on the fire that Pakistani outlet Aaj TV published on the same day (archived link). Other Pakistani media outlets also reported on the fire at the time, saying a short circuit was to blame for the blaze (archived here and here). The state-owned Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on April 26, 2025 that the Pakistan Airports Authority said there had been no incident of fire, and dismissed the claim as "baseless, false and misleading" (archived link). AFP has debunked misinformation spreading following the Kashmir attack here and here.
