In Cairo, the Gems of the Past Are Polished for the Future

In Cairo, the Gems of the Past Are Polished for the Future

It's a warm Tuesday evening in April, and Mazeej Balad's rooftop restaurant is packed with well-dressed Cairenes eager to experience the neighborhood's newest arrival. Kareem Nabil and Ahmed Ganzoury, the Egyptian duo behind the recently opened Mazeej Balad boutique hotel, welcome guests and pose for photos before we sit down for a dinner of koshary arancini and pickled lemon hummus. They are the force behind some of Egypt's most glamorous parties and events, as well as a handful of hot spots like Kiki's Beach, an oceanfront club on the country's North Coast, the Mediterranean-facing sweep west of Alexandria where the summer party scene is beginning to rival that of Mykonos. But with the bijou Mazeej Balad, Nabil and Ganzoury have turned their attention firmly to the capital.
The hotel is located on a frenetic Cairo street where dented taxis vie for space with men on bicycles balancing trays of flatbreads on their head. Mazeej Balad's doorman, in a red jacket and jaunty bow tie, cuts a dashing figure at the hotel entrance. Behind him a burgundy carpet flows over a marble staircase like spilled wine, guiding guests into the 129-year-old building that once housed the Hôtel-Pension Viennoise and an embassy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The hotel's interiors have been reimagined by young Egyptian designer Malak Orfy. In the lobby a eucalyptus tree grows through the bottle-green-marble reception desk, light from a crystal chandelier reflects off the shiny checkerboard floor, and a sleek cantilevered staircase lures guests up to the rooftop. Ceiling frescoes featuring Egyptian abstract artist Kairo Lumumba's trademark squiggles lead to five individually designed suites. Artworks by other local and regional artists—figurative sculptures by Sam Shendi, abstract portraits by Sabhan Adam, among others—dot the rest of the hotel. 'From the start we wanted the interiors to feel like a dialogue between past and present,' says Nabil. 'The building already had so much to say. We just needed to listen.'
I've been seduced by Cairo's intoxicating energy since I first visited on a solo trip 10 years ago: its crowded, dusty noisiness; its showstopping sights and ordinary backstreets; its heartbreakingly scruffy street cats and residents who broke into wide smiles whenever I made eye contact. On that trip I walked as much as possible—from the medieval citadel to Garden City on the banks of the Nile; from the leafy island of Zamalek to the busy bazaars of Khan el-Khalili—and I would jump into battered old taxis only when my legs got too tired or my shopping bags too heavy. A decade later it feels like everyone is talking about Cairo. Big projects are underway in and around the capital, like the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. It will join the salmon-hued neoclassical Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, which, for almost 125 years, has housed a large collection of pharaonic antiquities, including many of the treasures from Tutankhamen's tomb. When the new museum, which faces the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure, officially opens later this year, it will be the largest archaeological museum in the world and no doubt a magnet for visitors both domestic and international. Adding to the regional buzz are new satellite cities with Dubai-style residential complexes that have sprung up around Cairo in an effort to decentralize the capital and reduce congestion. But what I find more compelling is the quieter change that is spreading throughout the city's downtown.

Here, creatives and entrepreneurs are bringing life and beauty back to the handsome buildings that have fallen into disrepair and accumulated decades of dust. New places to stay, shop, and eat are calling people to spend time in the city's central neighborhoods, proving that innovation and preservation can coexist, that a modern sensibility can be compatible with a reverence for history. 'It doesn't need to be polished to be beautiful,' Nabil says of the neighborhood. 'My hope is that we keep its grit and its charm and just give it the love and attention it deserves.'

Leonardo DiCaprio & his supermodel girlfriend double date with Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sanchez on their superyacht

Newlyweds Bezos and Sanchez welcomed the couple for a double date on their $485 million superyacht Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez show no signs of slowing their post-wedding revelry. In fact, they're in the news again. Fresh off their headline-grabbing nuptials in Venice—a lavish affair marked by celebrity sightings, climate protests, and more than 90 private jets—the couple was recently seen hosting Leonardo DiCaprio and supermodel Vittoria Ceretti aboard Bezos' $485 million sailing yacht, Koru, off the sun-drenched coast of Ibiza. Daily Mail photos capture the foursome in full vacation mode: DiCaprio, ever low-key, in a baseball cap and shades; Ceretti in a strapless top and yoga pants; Sánchez floating across the deck in a breezy kimono over her bikini; and Bezos in tropical swim trunks, all smiles as the longtime friends exchanged hugs. But beneath the glittering surface, criticism lingers. DiCaprio's attendance at the high-emissions wedding sparked a wave of backlash, given his outspoken environmental advocacy. Koru itself—commissioned in 2018 and now the tallest sailing yacht in the world—has become an emblem of the ultra-rich's disconnect from the climate realities they often champion. For now, the Mediterranean plays host to their floating playground—a gleaming, three-masted monument to their status, controversy and all. However, if you want to visit like a pro, travel experts say to wait until after September 10 to visit Italy. Solve the daily Crossword

Leonardo DiCaprio was searched by police in Ibiza, Spain, but they didn't even recognize him

When attempting to enter a party, Leonardo DiCaprio was searched and Travis Scott was turned away - here's what happened. Leo's back in the news again. Last time, it was about his double date with billionaire Bezos on his yacht. Now, it's about a party he attended in Ibiza. Leonardo DiCaprio found himself momentarily halted at a high-profile party in Ibiza, when local police—failing to recognize the Oscar-winning actor—stopped and searched him before granting entry. The 50-year-old star, typically known for his incognito style, ditched his usual face covering for the night but still flew under the radar. In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, DiCaprio is seen dressed in head-to-toe black, wearing his signature baseball cap and a chain, calmly scrolling through his phone as he waits to be frisked outside a tequila-fueled bash. In the background, a woman can be heard remarking, 'They are searching me full-on right now.' It's unclear whether the voice belonged to his girlfriend, 27-year-old model Vittoria Ceretti, who was also spotted with him on the island, according to reporting by Page Six. Travis Scott turned away from the party The private villa party—hosted by Patrón and Spanish actor-singer Aron Piper—turned away rapper Travis Scott, according to the Daily Mail, though other VIPs like Kendall Jenner and DiCaprio's longtime friend Tobey Maguire made it through the door. DiCaprio is no stranger to Ibiza's glittering summer scene. Just earlier this month, he and Ceretti were photographed aboard Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's mega yacht off the island's sun-drenched coast. The couple also joined the billionaire pair's wedding festivities in Venice back in June, where Ceretti revealed she suffered a wardrobe mishap—ripping her vintage Dolce & Gabbana dress. Linked to DiCaprio since summer 2023, Ceretti has been candid about the frustrations of being labeled 'the girlfriend of' a global icon. 'As soon as you're in a relationship with someone who has a larger following than you, you become 'girlfriend of' — or 'boyfriend of,' for that matter,' she told Vogue France in March. 'And that can be extremely annoying.' 'Suddenly, people are talking about you as so-and-so's girlfriend who was so-and-so's ex,' she added, according to Page Six. 'So it's not nice to think that you can't love whoever you want, because of the labels people need to stick on you.' Why was Leonardo DiCaprio searched by police? As for the Ibiza party mix-up, an insider told Page Six that DiCaprio wasn't being targeted—just part of standard protocol. 'Every single person was patted down and ID'd,' the source said. 'It's funny—they did a double take, and then he went in!' Solve the daily Crossword
