Indian Navy to Commission 1st ASW Shallow Water Craft, Arnala on June 18; CDS Gen Anil Chauhan to preside
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): The Indian Navy is set to commission its first Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Shallow Water Craft, Arnala, at Visakhapatnam Naval Dockyard, on June 18, 2025. The ship's crest features a stylized Auger Shell, symbolizing resilience, vigilance, and dominance in challenging environments.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan, will preside over the ceremony. As per the release, the Vice Adm Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, will host the ceremony, which will be attended by senior naval officials, distinguished guests, and representatives from the shipbuilders and various other agencies associated with its construction.
The ship's motto, 'arnnve shaurym' (Arnave Shauryam), meaning 'Valour in the Ocean,' embodies the crew's unwavering courage and strength in the face of challenges at sea. This motto serves as a constant inspiration for the crew to remain steadfast and fearless.
Inscribed in Devanagari script, the ship's name, Arnala, is set against a blue backdrop, representing the ocean.

The event marks the formal induction of the first of the sixteen ASW-SWC class ships into the Indian Navy. Designed and constructed by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with M/s L&T Shipbuilders, Arnala is a testament to the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing, according to the release.
Constructed under the guidance of the Directorate of Ship Production and the oversight of the Warship Overseeing Teams in Kolkata and Kattupalli, Arnala was delivered to the Indian Navy on May 8.
Named after the historic Arnala Fort off Vasai, Maharashtra, the warship reflects India's rich maritime heritage. Much like the fort, which stood resiliently against various threats, the ship is designed to have a formidable presence at sea. Its robust construction and advanced capabilities ensure that it can withstand the challenges of the maritime domain, safeguarding India's waters from emerging threats.
The Ship's Crest is a powerful emblem that encapsulates the spirit and mission of this formidable naval vessel. At its heart is a stylised Auger Shell, a striking symbol set against a deep blue backdrop, evoking the vast, untamed ocean. The Auger Shell, with its spiralled, reinforced structure and precision tip, is no mere decorative element--it represents resilience, vigilance, survival, and dominance in the harshest of environments.
Much like the shell, the ship is engineered to endure the ocean's relentless forces, executing flawless anti-submarine operations with pinpoint accuracy, delivering ordnance on target with unmatched precision. The ship's name, inscribed in the elegant Devanagari script at the base of the crest, anchors this imagery with cultural pride and identity.
The warship incorporates more than 80% indigenous content and integrates advanced systems from leading Indian defence firms, including Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), L&T, Mahindra Defence, and MEIL. The project has engaged over 55 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), promoting domestic industry and generating related economic activity.
Designed for a range of ASW operations, Arnala is equipped to conduct Subsurface Surveillance, Search and Rescue missions, and Low-Intensity Maritime Operations. This 77.6 m long warship, with a gross tonnage of over 1490 tonnes, is the largest Indian Naval warship propelled by a Diesel Engine-Waterjet combination.
The commissioning of Arnala will mark a transformative moment in India's naval capabilities, strengthening coastal defence and reaffirming India's position as a self-reliant maritime power in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region. (ANI)

Char Dham Yatra: DGCA enhances surveillance on helicopter operations
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Reaffirming its steadfast commitment to aviation safety, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday ordered special audits and enhanced surveillance of helicopter operators conducting shuttle and charter services during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. The move comes after several recent incidents involving helicopter operations in the hill state. The aviation watchdog has also suspended the operations of Kestrel Aviation Private Limited with immediate effect after one of its helicopters made an emergency landing in the middle of a highway in Guptkashi on June 7. Five passengers on board the chopper, en route to Kedarnath from Rudraprayag, narrowly escaped. 'This is in addition to the suspension of operations of another operator for safety violations in May 2025,' DGCA said in a statement. As a precautionary measure, the DGCA is also reviewing the necessity of curtailing helicopter operations to the Char Dham entirely if required. It has started actively monitoring the live camera feeds provided by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) at Kedarnath, the statement said. The aviation watchdog said that any deviation from standard operating procedures (SOP) by helicopter operators is detected in real time, allowing for immediate corrective measures. 'Today, two helicopter operators conducting shuttle and charter services to Kedarnath from their respective helipads failed to adhere to SOPs, particularly regarding proper helicopter parking procedures,' said the DGCA A safety investigation has been initiated to identify contributing factors, including mechanical failures, operational errors, and weather-related challenges, the statement said. Additionally, directives have been issued to all helicopter operators, restricting operations to Out of Ground Effect (OGE) conditions till further notice. (ANI)

Singapore-flagged container ship MV Wan Hai 503 catches fire; Indian Navy rescues 18, four remain missing
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): The Indian Navy, in a closely coordinated search and rescue operation with the Coast Guard, DG Shipping and other stakeholders, safely rescued 18 out of 22 crew members of the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 after a fire broke out. 'The inputs of the incident were received at IFC IOR at about 0930 hr on June 9. INS Surat and a Dornier aircraft were immediately deployed by the Indian Navy to render necessary assistance, and at about 1630 hr, 18 out of 22 crew members were safely rescued by Surat. First aid has been rendered to the injured crew members, and the ship is presently proceeding to New Mangalore for disembarkation and further medical management,' the Navy said in a statement. According to the Indian Navy, the vessel was carrying 22 crew members, including 8 Chinese, 6 Taiwanese, 5 Myanmarese, and 3 Indonesian nationals. Following the explosion and escalation of the fire, the crew abandoned the ship. '18 crew members have been rescued, while four remain missing. A search and rescue operation is currently underway,' it said. The MV had reported an internal container explosion and a resultant major fire onboard. The incident occurred at around 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal, Kerala and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi. According to a release, preliminary reports suggest that 10-15 containers have fallen overboard. The vessel was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Nhava Sheva, Mumbai, with an expected time of arrival (ETA) on 10 June. The fire rapidly engulfed the midsection of the vessel, which is currently adrift. 'The Flag Administration of Singapore has been formally notified. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, has instructed the ship's owners to immediately engage qualified salvors and firefighting experts,' the release stated. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) initiated an immediate response, deploying two Dornier aircraft equipped with life rafts for aerial surveillance and situational assessment. Five ICG ships, including specialised firefighting and pollution response vessels, have been mobilised to the incident site. As per the release, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, activated the International Safety Net (ISN), prompting nearby merchant vessels MV AMBRA and MV ONE MARVEL to divert and assist in the rescue effort. The distress alert was initially relayed by MV Cape Valencia to MRCC Mumbai. The vessel continues to emit dense smoke, and the onboard fire poses a risk of further explosions and structural failure. Maritime traffic in the area has been advised to maintain a safe distance from the vessel. 'The Flag Administration of Singapore has been formally notified. Mortal remains of soldier killed in Sikkim landslide flown to home in Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep [India], June 9 (ANI): The mortal remains of Sepoy Sainudheen PK, who was killed during the devastating landslide at Chatten, North Sikkim were flown to his home in Androth, Lakshadweep, an official statement from the Army said. The mortal remains were recovered on June 8 after eight days of search efforts by the Army. 'His final journey--traversing nearly 2,500 kilometres from Chatten in North Sikkim to his native island of Androth in Lakshadweep--was a solemn and dignified tribute to a life dedicated to the nation. This long and logistically complex repatriation was made possible through a coordinated tri-services operation involving the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, supported ably by the local administration,' the army's statement read. Army Aviation helicopters and Indian Air Force aircraft, including the C-295, were employed for this effort, ensuring timely and seamless transportation across multiple legs of the journey. A ceremonial wreath-laying tribute was conducted with full military honours at Bengdubi Military Station on June 8, marking the Indian Army's profound respect. At Androth, the Indian Navy rendered a Guard of Honour, reaffirming the sanctity of soldierly sacrifice, according to the statement. 'Sepoy Sainudheen PK embodied the finest traditions of the Indian Army--quiet professionalism, absolute integrity, and unmatched dedication. Whether in Siachen or Sikkim, he served with a quiet courage that inspired all ranks. His sacrifice is a reminder that true valour lies in selfless service even in the face of unseen dangers. We salute a soldier, a comrade and a son of India whose memory will forever guide us,' said the soldier's commanding officer. Born on 20 December 1991 in Androth, Lakshadweep, Sepoy Sainudheen joined the Indian Army on 24 March 2012. Over the past 13 years, he served with honour and distinction across some of the harshest operational terrains, including the forbidding heights of the Siachen Glacier, the Army said. Incessant rainfall and a cloudburst in northern Sikkim on the night of May 30-31 triggered widespread devastation, severely damaging critical roads and bridges. A week ago, atleast 6 people went missing and 3 army personnel lost their lives in North Sikkim's Chaten area. (ANI)
