India, US to "coordinate in the upcoming" Financial Action Task Force (FATF) processes
Washington DC: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri engaged in several high-level engagements with senior officials of the US Administration.
Misri held talks with Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender, where they discussed collaboration in the upcoming Financial Action Task Force (FATF) processes.
"With Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Financial Action Task Force Financial Action Task Force, the Foreign Secretary discussed ways to deepen economic and financial ties, including collaboration in international financial institutions and coordination in the upcoming Financial Action Task Force (FATF) processes," a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs read.
Sources say India will spare no effort to bring Pakistan onto the grey list during the FATF proceedings. The global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog has been informed about India's intentions. Sources say that India will send a detailed dossier to the FATF, outlining evidence and concerns regarding the involvement of certain entities and individuals in terror financing and money laundering activities. The dossier will highlight India's findings and demand strict scrutiny and action by the FATF under international protocols.
Meanwhile, FS Misri held talks for the inter-agency discussions on the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century.
"During his visit, Misri held wide-ranging discussions with counterparts across the Department of State, National Security Council, Department of Defense, Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Commerce," the statement said.
Misri also held talks with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, where they agreed that Tech-Trade-Talent will shape the India-US partnership in the 21st century.
"At a luncheon meeting with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, both sides reviewed the full spectrum of the bilateral agenda. They underscored that Technology, Trade, and Talent would be the key pillars shaping the India-US partnership in the 21st century," the statement said.
"In meetings with Deputy Secretary of Defence Steve Feinberg and Under Secretary for Policy Elbridge Colby, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a robust and forward-looking defence partnership. Discussions focused on co-production and co-development initiatives, sustained joint military exercises, logistics and information-sharing frameworks, and enhancing interoperability between the armed forces," the statement added.
Misri also held talks with Under Secretary of Commerce Jeffrey Kessler and reviewed progress on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.
"In his meeting with Under Secretary of Commerce Jeffrey Kessler, both sides reviewed progress on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, and the need to streamline ITAR and export control regulations. They agreed to convene the next meeting of the India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue at the earliest opportunity," the statement said.
"Consistent with the vision outlined in the COMPACT, detailed inter-agency discussions were held on a range of strategic areas including defence cooperation, energy security, TRUST initiative, counter-terrorism, the Indian Ocean Strategic Venture, and collaboration through platforms such as the Quad, I2U2, and IMEEC," the statement added.
Misri, along with US Deputy National Security Advisor Pavan Kapoor, also held talks on deepening bilateral collaboration in critical and emerging technologies.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Washington, DC from May 27-29, 2025, for a series of high-level engagements with senior officials of the US Administration. The visit was a follow-up to the Prime Minister's visit to the United States on February 13, 2025, during which both sides launched the India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century. Deputy National Security Advisor Shri Pavan Kapoor was also part of the Indian delegation.

Trump's Tariffs are back
A US Federal Court has blocked President Donald Trump's tariff, a major setback to his trade policies. The Manhattan-based three-judge court of International Trade said the US Constitution gave Congress exclusive powers to regulate commerce with other nations, but did not give the President unilateral authority to impose tariffs on all countries. However, the US Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay of the order. Speaking to The Times of Oman, R. Madhusoodanan, a former SBI Official and a financial expert based in Muscat, said, the court ruling has cheered the financial markets; however, with the temporary stay, the tariffs are back now. Typically, such vital decisions like changes in tariffs need to be approved by the Congress, but were bypassed by the President, according to the petitioners. After taking office as President in January 2025, Trump announced his tariff plan against most countries of the world, citing that the US is being treated unfairly in global trade, creating an imbalance in tariffs. His stance was that if they charge us, we charge them. He said, the higher tariffs announcement has caused several economic, political, and strategic impacts on both Advanced Economies (AEs) and Emerging Market (EM) Economies of the world. It has disrupted the established supply chains and slowed economic growth. Despite the 90 days pause on the tariffs announced on 9th April 2025 for countries excepting China and China on 11th of May 2025, after the de-escalation of the trade tension meeting held in Geneva between the two countries, the Trump administration continued to fuel global economic uncertainty with its unpredictable trade policies. This was evidenced by the announcement of a 50% tariff on the European Union(EU) effective from June 1st and later shifted to July 9th 2025. Reports also indicated that he threatened a 25% tariff on Apple if it continued to manufacture iPhones overseas. R. Madhusoodanan said, no countries are insulated from the adverse impacts of the tariff threat. The global economy has been affected due to the tariffs and retaliatory tariffs announcements. There are signs of economic slowdown in the US, China, among other countries. The US is well aware of the long-term impact of the tariffs, i.e. a possible downturn in the GDP growth along with a slowdown in the US exports and consumption. If continued, it will push up inflation and hurt employment in the US. The Chinese economy has also been affected by the tariff war. Its export to US fell sharply, impacting the country's enormous manufacturing sector. China had to roll out fresh economic stimulus to the affected sectors. Large-scale incentives and subsidies were given to companies to make their products and services more competitive in the global markets. China also had to introduce many austerity measures to tide it over the situation arising out of this. The Emerging Market(EM) Economies are also affected, but have taken steps to reduce their dependency on the US and have formed new trading blocs, he said. Earlier, the US has made it clear that the tariff rates will soon return to a 'reciprocal ' level if countries don't reach trade agreements during the 90-day pause. The disruptive trade agenda will not help any country, for that matter. Now with the ruling of the US Court, I believe there remains a possibility of a mutually beneficial long-lasting resolution that can restore the stability of global trade, R. Madhusoodanan said.

France expresses strong support for India against terrorism, trade ties deepen: Piyush Goyal
Paris: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed India's gratitude to France for its unwavering support and solidarity following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, emphasising the shared commitment between both nations in maintaining zero tolerance against terrorism. Goyal is on his three-day official visit to Paris as part of his ongoing visit to France and Italy from 1-5 June 2025. Goyal highlighted the strong understanding between India and France on counter-terrorism efforts. "The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India," he stated. "The French Senate delegation that visited India fully supported India's stand and gave us confidence that the world stands with India when we are fighting against terrorism in all forms, whether state-sponsored or non-state actors," Goyal said. The April 22 attack, carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, is one of the deadliest in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama strike in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. The minister drew parallels between both countries' experiences with terrorism, referencing the devastating 2015 Paris attacks that killed approximately 125 people just days before the COP21 climate summit. "Acts of terrorism in France have caused a lot of damage," Goyal noted. "The people and the government of France can understand India's anger. They could connect with the displeasure the people of India felt," Goyal said. The visit underscores the deepening ties between India and France, built on the strong personal relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Macron share a very deep personal connect and rapport and have had frequent interactions, giving afresh momentum to the strong French-India ties," Goyal emphasised. This momentum was recently demonstrated in February 2025 when India and France co-hosted the AI Action Summit, which Goyal described as "a strong endorsement of our shared objective to further the ethical use of artificial intelligence and promote good regulations." During his Paris visit, Goyal is scheduled to meet with CEOs of several French companies to encourage investment in India, leveraging the country's market of 1.4 billion people and its skilled workforce. The minister will also hold bilateral meetings with his French counterparts and trade ministers from around the world. A key focus of the discussions will be advancing the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with France being one of its strongest supporters. Goyal is set to meet EU Trade Commissioner Maurus Sarkovic to take the trade partnership "to the next level at the earliest." The meetings aim to advance the Horizon 2047 roadmap finalised between Modi and Macron, which includes a mini-ministerial gathering of trade ministers from major economies to discuss strengthening multilateral trading systems and WTO reforms. The minister highlighted the role of approximately 120,000 Indians living in France as "a living bridge between India and France." He also mentioned the upcoming Swaminarayan temple near Paris as a symbol of Indian culture and heritage in Europe. In a significant cultural collaboration, the Louvre has entered into an MoU with India to help establish the Yug Yugeen Bharat Museum, described as the world's largest museum, which will showcase India's rich cultural heritage at the North and South Block complex in New Delhi.

FBI Chief says it is investigating "targeted terror attack" in Colorado
Colorado: FBI Director Kash Patel said on Sunday that the agency is investigating a "targeted terror attack" in Boulder, Colorado. Police in Boulder are responding to the attack at the Pearl Street Mall, where they say several people have been injured, ABC News reported. The incident took place at the intersection of 13th Street and Pearl Street on Sunday afternoon (local time), ABC News reported. In a post on X, Patel stated, "We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado. Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available." Authorities have evacuated the area from Broadway to the west, Pine Street to the north and 16th Street to the east, and Walnut Street to the south and have been conducting the probe into the incident, as per the report.
