Stunning Highlands beach with pristine pink sands named among UK's best hidden coastlines
A wild and remote beach in the far north of Scotland, known for its pristine pink sands and mysterious folklore, has been named among the UK's best hidden coastlines.
Tucked away in the north-west Highlands near Durness, Sandwood Bay has earned a spot on Simply Sea Views' list of the top ten secret beaches and coves where holidaymakers can escape the crowds and reconnect with nature.
While pink sands are usually associated with tropical spots like Bermuda or Indonesia, this little-known Scottish gem offers a slice of rosy paradise much closer to home.
Simply Sea Views said: "Tucked in the far northwest Highlands near Durness, Sandwood Bay is only accessible via a four-mile hike through moorland and lochans.
"The reward is a pristine stretch of pale sand and dramatic waves. It's utterly remote, with no facilities and no phone signal, just you, the sea, and the sky."
With no roads leading in, visitors must park at Blairmore and walk four miles across rugged terrain before reaching the untouched bay.
But for those who make the journey, the reward is immense, a breathtaking expanse of pale pink sand stretching for nearly 1.5 miles, backed by towering dunes and a tranquil loch.
Even during peak season, its isolation ensures a deep sense of seclusion. The area is part of the Sandwood Estate, managed by the John Muir Trust, and offers a raw, unspoilt slice of Scotland's natural beauty.
Domestic travel has soared in popularity in recent years, with more people than ever seeking out quiet, off-the-map destinations.
Last year, 67 per cent of Brits said they planned to holiday in the UK, often to save money and avoid airport chaos. A report found 52 per cent choose a domestic break, and 34 per cent took two or more staycations.
Sandwood Bay is more than just a pretty place. It is also rich in folklore. In 1900, local farmer Alexander Gunn set out with his dog in search of a missing sheep when he came across something extraordinary.
At first glance, he thought he saw a seal on the rocks, but as he drew closer, he realised it had flaming red hair, green-blue eyes, and a long, human-like form. According to local legend, Gunn had spotted a mermaid resting on the shore.
Today, the bay is still a haven for wildlife. Seals and dolphins are frequently spotted just offshore, adding to the sense of otherworldly magic.
Nearby, Kinlochbervie offers accommodation ranging from remote guesthouses to glamping sites, with prices from around £90 to £150 per night. The crofting community is also home to a large fish-processing plant and a modern harbour that welcomes trucks from across Europe.

From Kinlochbervie, a scenic single-track road winds past the isolated hamlet of Oldshoremore and its white sand beach, before reaching Blairmore, the starting point for the hike to Sandwood Bay.
The surrounding region offers much more for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Durness, the most north-westerly village on the British mainland, sits amidst dramatic scenery and open skies. The nearby North West Highlands Geopark draws hillwalkers and climbers eager to explore the rugged mountains, towering cliffs, and vast moorlands.
The village itself straddles the coastline where the road turns from inland peat bogs to the rocky shore, and visitors can even get a special passport stamp at the local post office if they're walking the North Highland Way.
Highlights include the eerie Smoo Cave, carved into a limestone cliff, and the beautiful white sands of Balnakeil Beach.

They then used this data to compile a list of the best ten locations, and three Scottish cities ranked high in the list. The 13th-century castle has a jaw-dropping 123-acre garden and estate and was taken over by the National Trust for Scotland back in 1984. And now, new master plans have revealed what is in store for the future of the 800-year-old castle. According to the Press and Journal, the works will be carried out in phases, and the first phase is set to see 'essential' conversation work carried out on the castle. The works will also look at some 'critical issues' in the castle, including decay of carved stonework. It will also see the B-listed 'at-risk' Old Home Farm complex, which sits inside the estate grounds, fixed and transformed into a welcoming new hub. Through this masterplan, we are taking the castle, gardens and grounds into their next era John Brown Drawings have revealed plans for an incredible new visitor hub, complete with a cafe, to be created. There is also expected to be a brand-new exhibition, as well as a conference, retail, skills and workshop spaces. After all the conservation efforts are carried out, it is expected that the public will be able to access different parts of the building for the first time. This includes seeing rooms and areas like the Victorian stables, as well as other never-seen-before artefacts. Mystery castle built in lake…but no one knows who owns it or how it was built The first phase is expected to be completed by 2027 and will cost around £5million. However, the full renovation and revamp project is thought to take around a decade to complete. And it means that a major 'international' fundraising effort will be required to pull it all together. Steeped in history FYVIE Castle, a remarkable fortress located near Oldmeldrum and Turriff, is one of Scotland's most iconic landmarks. It has been home to notable historical figures, including William the Lion, Robert the Bruce, and Charles I. It is also steeped in folklore, making it a fascinating workplace for those with an interest in Scottish history. The castle, which boasts nearly nine centuries of history, has become a sought-after venue for weddings and corporate events. Renowned for its opulent interiors, ornate ceilings, and world-famous art collection, the castle provides a truly magical setting for celebrations and gatherings. Park director John Brown told the Press and Journal: 'We are delighted to have been selected by the National Trust for Scotland to design the strategic masterplan for Fyvie Estate and develop the conservation proposals for Fyvie Castle. 'At its heart is an exploration of the joyful spirit of Fyvie'. National Trust for Scotland (NTS) chief executive Phil Long added: 'Through this masterplan, we are taking the castle, gardens and grounds into their next era. The 'perfect' Scottish cabin in the woods with hot tub you can book this summer
It is situated in a secluded woodland location. A cabin situated in a secluded location in a Scottish forest is currently available to book for a summer getaway. The unique accommodation has been described by one previous guest as "perfect". The cabin is located in Ardross in the Scottish Highlands. It is approximately a 10-minute drive away from the town of Alness in Ross and Cromarty and 25 miles north of Inverness. At the moment, holidaymakers can book a stay at the cabin through Airbnb. The accommodation is priced at £150 per night, with a minimum stay of two nights, plus additional cleaning and booking fees. The cabin, which has been recently refurbished, is "full of character" according to the Airbnb listing. It sleeps up to two people, featuring one king-size bed. Elsewhere, the property includes a living area with a "warm and cosy" wood burning stove. There is also a kitchen that features a range of appliances, as well as a bathroom with a walk-in shower. Outside, the cabin is surrounded by idyllic woodlands. The property shares grounds with another wooden house, though has its own fully enclosed garden to give privacy. One of the most notable features of the outdoor space is the hot tub. The jacuzzi offers green views out across the forest to enjoy. There is also a large number of walks and beauty spots to check out in the surrounding area. Highlights include the picturesque Fyrish Monument, which offers incredible views over the Cromarty Firth, and the 18th century Ardross Castle. While the Airbnb cabin will appeal to some holidaymakers, others may prefer to stay in a hotel with easier access to amenities. Fortunately, there are multiple accommodation options in Alness. One of the most popular hotels in the town is The Station Hotel, which features 23 guest rooms and offers live music and steak nights. Elsewhere, the Tullochard Guest House is a four-star retreat with a garden and in-room Wi-Fi. On Airbnb, the cabin is classed as a "guest favourite" property—meaning it is among the website's top properties based on ratings from visitors. The accommodation has an overall score of 4.96 out of five based on 185 reviews. One happy guest shared: "We spontaneously booked this cabin as the weather was due to get bad and thank god it had availability. "What a beautiful cabin with the perfect extras, especially the jacuzzi and wood burner. [They] just made it the most relaxing, cosy break for us and our dogs. "The perfect place to unwind and regroup surrounded by woodland and peace and quiet. We will definitely be back!" A previous review that was more mixed reads: "Overall we enjoyed our stay—however there are some improvements that could be made to make our stay five star, mainly in the comfort of the settee and chair provided." Another positive write-up reads: "Lovely cottage in the middle of the forest! Well-equipped and very comfortable bed. We really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub in the evenings."
