Arsenal respond after top target Viktor Gyokeres snubs Man Utd transfer

Daily Mirror12 hours ago

Arsenal and Manchester United have been heavily linked with Viktor Gyokeres but the Sporting Lisbon star is now said to have ruled out a summer move to Old Trafford
Arsenal are said to be readying an offer for Viktor Gyokeres with the Sporting Lisbon striker seemingly not interested in reuniting with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
Gyokeres, 27, has been heavily linked with both the Gunners and United after another fine season in Portugal, where his goals fired Sporting to another league title. And after plenty of talk about a blockbuster transfer, it seems things are finally starting to happen.

Arsenal and United are both in the market for more firepower, with the former understood to be targeting either Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

United are coming off the back of their worst ever Premier League campaign and, with that in mind, Portuguese outlet Record claims Gyokeres' representatives have told the Red Devils he will not be joining them this summer.
And in a double whammy for United the report adds that Arsenal are now 'preparing a second offer' for the striker in a bid to bring him to north London.
It's claimed that Sporting have already rejected an offer from Arsenal in the hope of banking at least €70million (£59.2m) before agreeing to part ways with their star forward.
It remains to be seen if Arsenal do put down a fresh offer for Gyokeres given the recent noise centred around Sesko; the Slovenia striker, like Gyokeres, is expected to move this summer and has no shortage of suitors and Arsenal have held transfer talks.
In Gyokeres' case, he is known to have an £85m release clause in his contract. It was, however, reported that the club would sanction an exit for just £59m this summer.

Frederico Varandas, Sporting's president, has disputed that, though, in the recent days. Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, hesaid: "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60m euros plus 10m euros because I never promised that.
"To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres - neither today nor last season."

"Sporting will not demand the release clause, but they should know me better by now: threats, blackmail, insults, they don't work with me," he added.
"I can guarantee one thing: Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m + €10m. He won't leave because I never allowed it, and with this game that the agent is playing, the situation will only get worse."

Major Florian Wirtz clue dropped as star speaks out on Liverpool move

Liverpool are set to splash the cash over the coming week with a deal for Florian Wirtz close to completion but there are doubts over Andy Robertson's long-term future at Anfield Liverpool have not messed around this summer as they attempt to launch a successful Premier League title defence. Despite losing Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds very quickly moved for his replacement by signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. They've also sealed a deal to sign wonderkid Armin Pecsi, the young goalkeeper set to compete with Alisson and fellow new arrival Giorgi Mamardashvilli next season. But Liverpool 's business does not look like it will end there. ‌ Arne Slot 's side are closing in on a mega deal for Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz, who could potentially become the most expensive footballer in British football history. He looks set to be joined by Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez. ‌ But it's not just incomings where Liverpool chiefs are earning their money. There's also plenty of interest in their current stars, with decisions set to be taken over their futures. With that being said, get up to date with all of the latest transfer news and rumours from Anfield: Wirtz clue dropped Bayer Leverkusen appear to have strongly hinted that Florian Wirtz is on his way to Liverpool having made moves to sign his replacement. Previous reports suggested that the German side were interested in Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert. A fresh report from Voetbal International has revealed that PSV star Johan Bakayoko is also on Leverkusen's shortlist. He is seen as a more affordable option for Leverkusen given he has just one year remaining on his PSV deal. Ironically, Bakayoko has been linked with a move to Anfield in the past. But Liverpool now appear very unlikely to pursue him given their imminent deal for Wirtz. ‌ Brighton star reveals Liverpool dream Brighton star Igor Julio has claimed it is his dream to sign for Liverpool having urged teammate Joao Pedro to move to Anfield. 'I told [Pedro] that he has to think about what he wants from his career,' he said. 'In my opinion, if I were going to a 'Big Six' team, I would go to a team that fights for the Premier League, plays in the Champions League and is always in a position to win. ‌ 'I would go to a Liverpool team and I think he would fit in perfectly at Liverpool. It's because I've always dreamed of playing for Liverpool and I would go there.' Atletico eye Robertson On the topic of defenders, Liverpool look like they have a fight on their hands to keep Andrew Robertson. According to The Athletic, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have put Robertson right at the top of their shortlist for a new left-back having abandoned a move for Theo Hernandez. Talks are yet to be opened between the two clubs and with the defender himself, albeit he is apparently keen on a move to Madrid. Robertson could potentially be set to fall down the pecking order at Anfield due to the possible signing of Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez. Arsenal are hoping to add some new faces to their squad this summer having been linked to Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Nico Williams and some moves look close to completion Arsenal have yet to add a new face to their squad this summer - but that could all be about to change very soon. The Gunners are chasing a host of stars across a number of positions. A new striker is right at the top of Mikel Arteta 's summer shopping list and a number of options have been identified. Benjamin Sesko looked to be their favoured candidate but Viktor Gyokeres now appears more likely to move to North London. ‌ Elsewhere, a midfielder is also a priority, with Martin Zubimendi closing in on a switch. Competition from Real Madrid caused a late issue but it appears that Arsenal have almost won the race. ‌ Finally, Kepa Arrizabalaga looks set to complete a move from Chelsea. For all of that and more, take a look at the latest rumours from Arsenal: Gyokeres picks Arsenal Arsenal's chances of signing Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres have been given a massive boost after he rejected a move to Manchester United. The Gunners were previously battling with the Red Devils to sign the Swedish striker. Given Ruben Amorim's presence at Old Trafford, United appeared to be the favourites. But according to reports, Gyokeres has rejected a switch to Old Trafford and has now expressed his desire to sign for Arsenal. He has used his representatives to express that preference, with negotiations between Sporting and Arsenal underway. It is also suggested that should the clubs struggle to find an agreement, that could force the North Londoners to pay his £85m release clause. ‌ Yamal teases transfer While Gyokeres now looks set to be on his way to the Emirates, one man who won't be joining him is Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams. The Spaniard was previously identified as a potential addition to the Gunners' wide positions. But as per reports in Spain, La Liga giants Barcelona have relaunched talks to sign him. Barcelona chief Deco has held discussions with the player's agent Felix Tainta and Williams is open to a move to the Camp Nou. Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has already hinted at a move having shared an image of the pair celebrating on his Instagram story just minutes after the update was issued. ‌ Gabriel approves Rodrygo move Arsenal star Gabriel has given the green light to Arsenal pursuing Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as an alternative to Williams. He said: "I don't know. "I would like it, but who knows? Rodrygo for me is a phenomenon. People are mentioning his name a lot. If it depended on me, of course. As I said, he's a phenomenon." Rodrygo has already been linked with a move to the Emirates this summer. His contract is set to run until 2028. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Ruben Amorim handed double transfer blow as top target rejects Man Utd move

Ruben Amorim is desperate to land some top quality signings to overhaul his struggling Manchester United squad and he has already taken the first step by landing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha Manchester United have a lot of work to do to return to the Premier League 's summit after their difficult first season under Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach could not arrest the team's alarming slide down the table as they ended up finishing 15th and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham - but now he is aiming to bounce back by securing a raft of top signings. ‌ United have already brought in forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62m and are hoping to snap up Brentford frontman Bryan Mbeumo too - despite being rivalled by Spurs. ‌ Amorim will also be hoping to shift a number of unwanted stars that will give him more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market amid the club's perilous financial situation. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look through the biggest Manchester United transfer news and gossip. Gyokeres rejects United Without doubt the biggest news in the last 24 hours is a report from Portuguese outlet Record, which claims Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has turned down the chance to move to Old Trafford. The Swedish forward has been one of United's top targets since Amorim became the club's new head coach - after previously working with Gyokeres at Lisbon. United have watched the player underline his ability and reputation as one of the world's best strikers after netting 53 goals in all competitions ‌ But after the Red Devils missed out on Champions League football, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the club to attract Gyokeres, especially with rivals Arsenal also in the mix for his signature. The report claims Gyokeres' agent has informed United he does not want to join them, with Arsenal now securing the upper hand. It has been previously reported that Sporting have rejected a £55m bid for Gyokeres, which is said to have triggered anger from the striker, who said: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." ‌ Leverkusen pull out of Garnacho race Another blow for Amorim. The United head coach is eager to shift some of his deadwood - particularly Alejandro Garnacho after falling out with the player. But Sky in Germany are reporting that Bayer Leverkusen are now "unlikely" to make a bid for the Argentine due to the mounting "package of transfer fee and wages" being too high for the German club. United are said to have slapped a £70m price tag on the player despite his difficult season for United. He scored ten goals and assisted nine but only stated 23 games in the Premier League out of a possible 38 and was dropped by Amorim for a number of games. ‌ Leverkusen are looking to build after agreeing to let Florian Wirtz join Liverpool for around £116.5m but are unwilling to break the bank for Garnacho. A move to Leverkusen would see the winger reunite with former United boss Erik ten Hag, who has just taken over the Bundesliga side. ‌ Garnacho's future at United looks bleak after he was dropped by Amorim for the Europa League final, with the player speaking after the game to question the manager's decision and admitting the team's season was "s***". United set to welcome Leon One silver lining for United amid a string of set-backs. Some supporters might have forgotten they actually agreed a move for a young talent called Diego Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno for around £7m. Left-back Leon has previously earned comparisons to Wayne Rooney given his similar impact at a young age and buzzcut hairstyle. ‌ United paid an initial £3.3m with add-ons for the 18-year-old's services but allowed him to stay with the club until the summer. The club will now welcome Leon to their camp at the start of July and his arrival should provide a boost to Amorim as a hungry, young player who wants to add competition and push for a place. Last season he played 28 times for Porteno, scoring three goals, and will now link up with a number of young players United are attempting to develop, including Ayden Heaven, Chido-Obi and Sekou Kone.
