Euro 2025 Quarters: Swede skipper Asllani believes underdog perception ‘suits' team

Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani believes 'people should talk about us more' ahead of Thursday's quarter-final clash with England.
A spot in the final four of Euro 2025 is at stake when the teams meet at Stadion Letzigrund.
Sweden earned their place in the quarter-finals after finishing top of Group C with three wins from as many games, including a thumping 4-1 victory over Germany in their last group match.
The Scandinavians have progressed deep in their last two major tournaments, finishing third at the 2023 World Cup and reaching the semi-finals at Euro 2022 – where they were knocked out by the Lionesses – but Asllani believes their perception as underdogs can be beneficial.
'People rarely speak of us as a team that can win the tournament so we're flying under the radar,' she said in quotes reported on UEFA's website.
'That suits us a little. We know that we can beat any team in the world when we're at our best. People should talk about us more.'
Asllani is relishing competing in the knockout stages, telling a press conference: 'It feels like the tournament really gets going once the group stage is over.
'We have experience in these kind of matches and it is a little bit like the fun starts now when you test your mettle against the best teams. It's just a longing for the game to start now.
'It's going to be an incredibly tough match but I do think we're fairly evenly matched. You can tell that from the last two games against England, two draws.'
Sweden were beaten 4-0 by England in the semi-finals of Euro 2022, but Asllani admitted it is not a result she has dwelt on having met the Lionesses since then, drawing twice in qualifiers for this tournament.
She said: 'I haven't thought about that match at all to be honest with you. What is most recent in my mind are the two most recent matches against England, two draws, and since then a lot of things have happened.
'We've played a number of matches after that against other teams and that is what you need to focus on. Of course, it's not as if I've completely forgotten that match, but it's not something that I dwell on.
'For my own part, I'm just longing for this game to start and start it with the attitude of 'yes, we're going to win this match'.'

Wellens, 34, completed his set of Grand Tour stage victories, attacking from a breakaway on the 169km stage from Muret and quickly opening a sizeable gap before the long downhill run into the medieval city where his margin of victory over Victor Campenaerts was 88 seconds. In the confusion of another frantic day of racing on Sunday, Julian Alaphilippe celebrated as though he had won the stage when he edged a three-way sprint for third, having apparently been without a working radio after hurting his shoulder in an earlier crash. Instead, it was a fifth stage victory of this Tour for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, with Pogacar having taken the other four on his way to building an advantage of four minutes 13 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard going into Monday's rest day. There was no change at the top of the general classification, with the main favourites finishing some six minutes after Wellens took the win. Florian Lupowitz remains third, just shy of eight minutes off yellow and one minute 25 seconds ahead of 22-year-old Scot Oscar Onley. 'It was a very special victory,' Wellens said. 'Everybody wants to ride the Tour de France but not many get to win at the Tour de France so it's very beautiful...' It was Wellens' first Grand Tour stage win since he won two stages of the 2020 Vuelta a Espana to add to his two Giro d'Italia stage victories.

Scheffler strolls to British Open title and third leg of career Grand Slam
PA Media/DPA Portrush (Northern Ireland) Scottie Scheffler's serene progress to his first British Open Championship became a procession at Royal Portrush as the anticipated charge from Rory McIlroy failed to materialize and no-one else could get close to the relentless American. The reigning US PGA champion claimed the third leg of the career Grand Slam, and his fourth major in total, in some style and has only 11 months to wait to try to complete the set in the same four-year time-frame as 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus did. Only Tiger Woods has achieved it quicker but world number one Scheffler is starting to be mentioned in the same breath - and he is still getting better. He won his first Masters by three, his second by four and May's US PGA by five. However, this was on another scale with his 17-under total on Sunday giving him a four-shot victory over compatriot Harris English, also runner-up to him at the PGA, in McIlroy's own backyard, which was even more comfortable than the numbers suggest. No-one in the modern era has ever won their first four majors by three shots or more - Young Tom Morris, John Henry Taylor and James Braid all achieved it before the World War I. McIlroy completed his own career Grand Slam at Augusta in April and on Saturday described victory here for Scheffler, who has now won 25% of all majors since 2022, as 'inevitable.' It was not the boldest prediction ever made in sport but the manner in which his rival clinically clinched the title was nevertheless impressive. The 29-year-old became only the fourth male golfer after Woods, Nicklaus and Gary Player to win the Masters, US PGA and Open before the age of 30. In his Tuesday press conference, in a rare glimpse of his inner thoughts, Scheffler spoke of how being successful at golf does not fulfil him, how he only gets a two-minute buzz from winning and being a good husband and father means more to him. So when he holed his last putt he finally allowed himself to show some emotion, tossing his cap into the air before hugging wife Meredith and son Bennett and being congratulated by parents Scott and Diane. But the 14-month-old Bennett's enjoyment of the victory lasted an even shorter time than his dad's, crying when he was taken from his arms so Scheffler could complete the formalities of signing his card. 'I don't really know exactly what to say. I know I wasn't the fan favourite today,' Scheffler said. 'When I'm inside the ropes I'm trying to compete - I don't think of much else. It will take a little while for this to sink in but right now it's pretty cool.' The chasing pack had teed off more in hope than expectation as the world number one had converted his previous nine 54-hole leads into victories. Sure enough, a brilliant approach from the rough to inside a foot saw him birdie the first to pull further away from home favourite McIlroy, struggling for the fast start he needed from six shots behind. He never looked back as birdies at four and five were followed by a clutch 16-footer for par and his biggest show of emotion to date with a fist pump. Mcllroy had birdied the second, bogeyed the fourth and picked up another shot at the 607-yard seventh while, behind him Scheffler found a bunker off the tee but still unerringly holed a 15 foot par putt. His over-confidence got the better of him out of sand at the next, hitting the face and leaving his ball in the trap resulting in a double-bogey - his first dropped shots in 33 holes. But if his challengers thought that had left the door ajar, it was slammed shut at the very next hole when he landed his approach four feet from the pin to turn at 16 under. McIlroy's mis-hit chip at the 10th for double bogey ended his chances eight back. Birdies at 12 and 15 got him back to 10 under but he would get no closer. English emerged from the pack with a five-under 66 to take second, while compatriot Chris Gotterup proved last week's Scottish Open victory was no fluke with a 67 to finish third on 12 under. Gotterup briefly reduced the gap to four at 13 but Scheffler subsequently carded his fifth and final birdie of the day at 12 to keep him at arm's length. Former US Open champion Wyndham Clark raced through the field with a 65, but he had started from too far back and could only get to 11 under alongside England's Matt Fitzpatrick and China's Haotong Li. Scot Robert MacIntyre, after his US Open near miss, shot 67 for 10 under alongside McIlroy and defending champion Xander Schauffele.

Ten-player Germany defeat France on penalties to reach Euros semis
dpa Basel Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger saved two spot-kicks as 10-player Germany defeated favourites France 6-5 on penalties to reach the women's Euro 2025 semi-finals. Berger was also the hero at the Paris Olympics last summer, when she saved Alexia Putellas' last-minute penalty to secure a 1-0 win against world champions Spain and the bronze medal. At Euro 2025, Berger once again stepped up to save France's first and last spot-kick. The Germans have booked another clash with Spain in their semi-final match on Wednesday. The other semi-final is England v Italy on Tuesday. 'Insane, really. We believed in ourselves,' captain Janina Minge told broadcasters ZDF, while coach Christian Wück celebrated an 'unbelievable performance.' Worst start possible for Germany Just as in the final group match against Sweden, Germany went down to 10 players in the first half when Kathrin Hendrich was sent off for pulling Griedge Mbock Bathy's hair inside the box in the 13th minute. Hendrich was replacing Carlotta Wamser, who was sent off against Sweden. Wamser, meanwhile, had earned a spot in the starting line-up after captain Giulia Gwinn suffered an injury in the opening game against Poland. France were awarded a penalty, and Berger got a hand to the ball but couldn't stop Grace Geyoro's spot-kick from going into the net in the 15th. However, Germany stood strong and stunned the French side as Sjoeke Nüsken headed in the equalizer in the 25th after a corner. Delphine Cascarino could have given France the lead again, but her effort in the 40th was ruled out for offside. France have another goal ruled out, Germany miss penalty France had another goal disallowed after the break. Geyoro thought she had her brace after slotting in the rebound from Marie-Antoinette Katoto's header in the 57th. But Katoto was offside during her goal attempt, which was saved by Berger. Germany, meanwhile, had a golden chance to take the lead after Jule Brand was brought down in the penalty area, but Nüsken's spot-kick was saved by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin in the 69th. The Germans held off intense French pressure to take the game to extra time, and Berger made an amazing one-handed stop to avoid what would have been an own goal from Minge in the 103rd minute. Special tournament for cancer survivor Berger The Euro 2025 tournament has been a special achievement for Berger after surviving thyroid cancer. She was first diagnosed in 2017 and underwent surgery. During Euro 2022, when she was a back-up keeper, Berger learned that the cancer was back, but kept it to herself at that time. Berger, 34, became first-choice in the national team last year for the Paris Olympics and retained her number one status for the Euros in Switzerland.
