Who is the favourite to win the F1 Canadian GP?

Daily Mirror13-06-2025
With McLaren securing a 1-2 in Spain two weeks ago, all eyes will be on the team to secure yet another win after impressive displays between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri this season
It is one of the favourite tracks for the drivers as Formula 1 arrives in Canada with McLaren eyeing yet another win as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris lockhorns again in the Drivers' Championship. After getting a 1-2 in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona two weeks ago, Piastri now sits 10 points ahead of his teammate as it looks to be an all-McLaren affair for the title.
The bookies expect a similar result ahead of this weekend's grand prix in what appears to be favourable conditions for the drivers ahead of Sunday's race. Warm conditions will mean the tyres will not take too long to get to optimal condition as the drivers negotiate around the slow-speed corners before the hairpin that goes straight into the chicaine - a huge overtaking opportunity as we have seen over the years.
McLaren have not won on this track since Hamilton was part of the team back in 2012 with Max Verstappen looking to secure his fourth successive victory on this race track.
Lewis Hamilton is a longshot in the market as he looks for his first win at Ferrari but has equalled the most pole positions (six) and wins (seven) alongside Michael Schumacher. Another victory in Canada this weekend and he will become the most successful driver in F1 history at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Who is the favourite?
The bookies are going easy on this one with Oscar Piastri as the favourite ahead of the Canada GP. The Australian has already picked up five wins this season already including China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami and Spain last time out whereas his teammate Norris has two wins under his belt but has five fastest lap times this season.
The bookies have him best priced at 6/4 with Ladbrokes while William Hill and Paddy Power have him at 13/10 to secure a victory in Canada this weekend.
Other bookies including Sky Bet are offering 5/4 for the Australian to win his sixth race of the season and spearhead his chances of a Drivers' title come the end of the year.
His closest competitor in the market is Brit Lando Norris who is best priced at 2/1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes. Norris has only picked up two wins so far this season but plenty of podium finishes and consistency means he is only 10 points behind his teammate in the Championship with McLaren sitting comfortably in the Constructors' Championship with 362 points - almost double that of second-place Ferrari.

Lots of soul searching in off season for Ulster's also-rans as they plot renewed assault on 2026 glory

For the most part, it was an underwhelming campaign this year. Here we assess the state of the nine counties The curtain has come down on the 2025 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship but already the focus has switched to next year's Championship. Yet with several teams still having to appoint new managers, a huge raft of players spending part of their summer in places like the United States and Australia and the likely injection of more new players, it could be said that wholesale preparations for the 2026 season have still to be stepped up.

Max Verstappen explains why McLaren are dominating this year

McLaren are dominating the Formula 1 season, having all but secured the constructors' title with a massive 299-point lead over Ferrari. The drivers' championship is now a direct shootout between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, with Norris closing the gap to nine points after his victory in Hungary. Max Verstappen believes McLaren's comprehensive success stems from their "incredible" medium corner speed and superior tyre degradation. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella confirmed Verstappen's assessment, stating GPS data shows their car achieves the highest mid-corner speed in medium-speed corners. Stella acknowledged that while McLaren excels in medium-speed corners, they are not the fastest in very high or low-speed corners, but these medium-speed corners are prevalent in the championship.

US joint venture BetMGM helps Entain to beat expectations

A flurry of bets on the football Club World Cup and summer tennis tournaments helped the UK gambling company Entain to better-than-expected results, helping it brace for looming tax rises in its domestic market. The owner of brands including Ladbrokes and Coral reported an 11% rise in underlying profits to £583m in the first half of the year, on revenues that rose 3% to nearly £2.6bn. At BetMGM, Entain's 50%-owned US joint venture, revenues rose by more than a third. US sports betting continues to grow rapidly following the supreme court's overturning in 2018 of a decades-old ban on the practice. But Entain also performed strongly in its home market, with online gambling revenues up 21% in the UK and Ireland. Entain said the Club World Cup, held in the US earlier this summer, had delivered 'fantastic results' for the company, despite a muted response to the tournament in the UK. Entain describes Brazil as one of its 'must win' markets, alongside the UK and US, and it has a partnership with the São Paulo team – and Club World Cup participant – Palmeiras. The company said this helped boost local interest in betting on the tournament. The Club World Cup final, between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, was the year's most popular event by the number of bets taken. The French Open and Wimbledon tennis tournaments also delivered new records for the company, amid surging interest from gamblers in a sport whose design inherently creates opportunities to place rapid-fire wagers. Female tennis players have spoken out this year about the abuse they receive, often from gamblers frustrated by having lost bets. Entain's chief executive, Stella David, appointed earlier this year after her predecessor, Gavin Isaacs, departed suddenly after five months, said the results showed the company was 'getting stronger, fitter and faster'. Entain's improved fortunes in the UK could cushion the blow if the Treasury goes ahead with plans to target the gambling industry with higher taxes, as the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, casts around for ways to plug a fiscal hole. The Treasury is expected to increase taxes levied on the sector, albeit by a smaller amount than Brown has suggested.
