Who is the favourite to win the F1 Canadian GP?

Who is the favourite to win the F1 Canadian GP?

Daily Mirror18 hours ago

With McLaren securing a 1-2 in Spain two weeks ago, all eyes will be on the team to secure yet another win after impressive displays between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri this season
It is one of the favourite tracks for the drivers as Formula 1 arrives in Canada with McLaren eyeing yet another win as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris lockhorns again in the Drivers' Championship. After getting a 1-2 in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona two weeks ago, Piastri now sits 10 points ahead of his teammate as it looks to be an all-McLaren affair for the title.
The bookies expect a similar result ahead of this weekend's grand prix in what appears to be favourable conditions for the drivers ahead of Sunday's race. Warm conditions will mean the tyres will not take too long to get to optimal condition as the drivers negotiate around the slow-speed corners before the hairpin that goes straight into the chicaine - a huge overtaking opportunity as we have seen over the years.
McLaren have not won on this track since Hamilton was part of the team back in 2012 with Max Verstappen looking to secure his fourth successive victory on this race track.
Lewis Hamilton is a longshot in the market as he looks for his first win at Ferrari but has equalled the most pole positions (six) and wins (seven) alongside Michael Schumacher. Another victory in Canada this weekend and he will become the most successful driver in F1 history at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Who is the favourite?
The bookies are going easy on this one with Oscar Piastri as the favourite ahead of the Canada GP. The Australian has already picked up five wins this season already including China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami and Spain last time out whereas his teammate Norris has two wins under his belt but has five fastest lap times this season.
The bookies have him best priced at 6/4 with Ladbrokes while William Hill and Paddy Power have him at 13/10 to secure a victory in Canada this weekend.
Other bookies including Sky Bet are offering 5/4 for the Australian to win his sixth race of the season and spearhead his chances of a Drivers' title come the end of the year.
His closest competitor in the market is Brit Lando Norris who is best priced at 2/1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes. Norris has only picked up two wins so far this season but plenty of podium finishes and consistency means he is only 10 points behind his teammate in the Championship with McLaren sitting comfortably in the Constructors' Championship with 362 points - almost double that of second-place Ferrari.
GP Winner Odds
Oscar Piastri - 6/4
Lando Norris - 2/1
Max Verstappen - 4/1

Kimi Antonelli - 50/1
Carlos Sainz - 250/1
Alex Albon - 250/1
Fernando Alonso - 250/1

Martin Brundle makes feelings clear as Canada GP steward suspended before race

Sky Sports presenter Martin Brundle has taken to social media after the FIA confirmed that steward Derek Warwick would not be working on this weekend's Grand Prix in Montreal Martin Brundle has thrown his support behind Derek Warwick after he was controversially axed as steward at this weekend's Canadian GP. The 70-year-old was due to be working in Montreal this weekend but has now been suspended by the FIA. The decision comes after quotes attributed to the former F1 driver were circulated by a gambling firm in the lead up to the Grand Prix. A number of websites have since picked up the interview which had comments surrounding a number of current drivers. ‌ 'Following recent unauthorised media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix,' an FIA statement read. ‌ 'He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi, who will be officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva for the remainder of the event. 'After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised. Derek will resume his duties as a steward in the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.' After the decision was announced, Sky Sports favourite Brundle has defended his friend Warwick and says he retains his absolute support. He said on social media: 'Derek Warwick is one of the most genuine and passionate people and racers I have ever known. He is a salt of the earth genuine guy. ‌ 'He's done so much for young racers and motorsport in general. Not least as an FIA Steward. He has my absolute support and friendship until my last breath." Warwick becomes the second high-profile steward to be stood down this season after Jonny Herbert suffered a similar fate. Like Warwick, the decision to remove Herbert was made citing a conflict of interest with comments in the media. On the track, George Russell showed good early pace, finishing as the quickest in Friday's second practice session. The British driver took pole in Canada last year and showed signs he could repeat that feat by edging out Lando Norris and Kimi Anotinelli who were second and third fastest respectively. ‌ Russell was later summoned to race stewards for failing to follow the escape road at turn 14, but was handed a warning rather than any penalties for the weekend. There were also two crashes, with Lance Stroll thudding into a concrete wall and Ferrari's Charles LeClerc suffering a heavy accident during the first practice session. ‌ It damaged both the wheels on the left side of his car and also some of the bodywork. And, crucially, Ferrari mechanics discovered that the impact also damaged the chassis itself, meaning the team's spare chassis would have been needed if Leclerc was to head out on track in the second session of the day. But, as team principal Frederic Vasseur said in the press conference held between the two practice sessions, that would be against the rules. And so Leclerc was forced to miss virtually all the running on Friday. Vasseur said: "When I left the garage, we think that we damaged the chassis and we won't be able to do FP2, by regulation. We need to do some checks, but I think it's over for today for Charles."

Makers of new F1 film say they could not have done it without Lewis Hamilton

Seven-time world champion Hamilton is an executive producer on the Brad Pitt movie, titled 'F1', which is released in the United Kingdom on June 25. Hamilton has been heavily involved in the script – which sees 61-year-old Pitt play the role of veteran driver Sonny Hayes returning to the F1 grid after a long absence – to ensure the film is as authentic as possible. Joseph Kosinski, the man behind Top Gun: Maverick and director of the F1 movie, said at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix: 'Lewis was the first person I reached out to when I had the initial idea for this. 'I sent him an email and just said, 'I want to tell a story in your world. I want to make it as authentic as possible. Will you help me?' And luckily Lewis said 'Yes'. 'He was involved in all the technical details with fascinating advice. In Hungary, for instance, he said, 'If Brad's going to let someone pass during a blue flag and he wants it to be as tight as possible, he's going to only do that at turn six'. SNEAK PEEK: The APXGP team meet for the first time! 👀#F1TheMovie – only in theatres late June Get tickets now: 🎟️#F1 — Formula 1 (@F1) June 11, 2025 'That kind of detail from a seven-time world champion who lives and breathes this world every day, I couldn't have got that from anywhere else. 'But Lewis also contributed to the story. There is a part in the film where Sonny Hayes talks about why he races and almost the spiritual side of it. And that also was inspired by a conversation with Lewis. So his involvement has been amazing. And we couldn't make the film without him.' Pitt's fictional rookie team-mate Joshua Pearce is played by British actor Damson Idris. Filming has taken place across multiple races over the last two seasons, and F1 chiefs hope the movie will follow the popularity of Netflix's Drive To Survive series in cracking America.

Mercedes' George Russell fastest in second practice for Canadian Grand Prix

The British driver, who took pole position in Montreal last year, edged out McLaren compatriot Lando Norris, with Kimi Antonelli underlining Mercedes' speed to set the third quickest time. Championship leader Oscar Piastri was only sixth, with Lewis Hamilton eighth, one place ahead of Max Verstappen, who had earlier finished fastest in the first running of the weekend. 🏁 END OF FP2 🏁 TOP 10Russell 💨NorrisAntonelliAlbonAlonsoPiastriSainzHamiltonVerstappenLawson#F1 #CanadianGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 13, 2025 Russell has been one of the grid's standout performers this season with four podium finishes already under his belt, matching the tally he managed for the entire 2024 campaign. At the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday, Russell's lap of one minute and 12.123 seconds was the fastest of the day to leave Norris trailing. McLaren have dominated the campaign so far, but in practice here they appeared to be lacking the advantage which has carried them to seven wins from the nine races staged. Norris was in striking range of Russell, just 0.028sec behind the Mercedes man, but Piastri was 0.439sec off the pace, having finished the first practice session in 14th. Williams' Alex Albon took fourth, with Fernando Alonso fifth, but the two-time world champion's Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll crashed out. Stroll, who had a medical procedure on a wrist injury which prevented him from contesting the Spanish Grand Prix a fortnight ago, thudded into the concrete wall at turn seven to bring an abrupt end to his session. The Canadian was the day's second major casualty after Charles Leclerc's preparations for the rest of the weekend were dealt a blow when he suffered a heavy accident with just nine laps on the board in first practice. The Monegasque crashed into the barrier on the entry to turn four and sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his Ferrari. The force of the impact sent him sideways and across the other side of the chicane. 'F***,' said Leclerc on the radio. 'Sorry, I am in the wall. My bad. I should have gone straight, but I thought I would make the corner and I hit the wall.' Leclerc's survival cell on his Ferrari needed replacing which sidelined him for the remainder of the day. His accident marked an underwhelming day for Ferrari which will have done little to lift the gloom around the Italian team with Hamilton 0.530 sec slower than the pace-setting Russell.
