Pakistan hockey team's participation in the upcoming FIH Pro League 2025-26 now depends on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's decision, as the Pakistan Hockey Federation struggles to arrange the required $2.5 million to take part in the tournament. The FIH Pro League is a top-tier hockey contest in which the world's best teams play against each other over two legs.
Pakistan had initially failed to qualify for the Pro League after losing to New Zealand in the 2024-25 FIH Nations Cup. However, they have been offered a chance to join the tournament by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Wednesday after New Zealand pulled out of the contest.

Pakistan hockey faces financial crisis
Pakistan have to confirm their participation by 12 August, but the cost involved in participating in the tournament is proving to be a stumbling block. As per an estimation by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), the team will need 700 million Pakistani Rupees (approximately $2.5 million) to complete the whole campaign.
However, the cash-strapped PHF finds itself unable to raise the money, approaching the Pakistan Sports Board for the funds. Reportedly, the Pakistan Sports Board has informed the hockey federation that it doesn't have enough funds. The PSB has also asked PHF to clarify where the funds allocated to them since last year have been spent.
'Concerning the invitation to participate in the FIH Pro League, [the] members authorised the PSB president Rana Sanaullah to take the final decision. It was agreed that a formal letter, outlining the rationale and objectives of participation, would be sent by the PSB President to the Prime Minister,' Pakistan Sports Board said after a meeting with the hockey federation, as per Dawn.
Now the ball is in Pakistan PM Shebaz Sherif's court as he is likely to take a final call on the team's participation in the hockey Pro League tournament.
Incidentally, Pakistan also missed participation in the inaugural Pro League in 2019 due to a financial crisis. They were later fined 170,000 euros by the PHF.

Pakistan Cricket Board reportedly ready to bail out national hockey team, but at a significant cost

If the report turns out to be true, the Pakistan Cricket Board will sponsor the national hockey team's participation in the FIH Pro League, but the hockey federation will have no say in the matter. The PCB will control every financial decision. read more Pakistan hockey team may finally get to play in FIH Pro League with PCB's help. Image: @AmmadButt96 on X Pakistan hockey team's participation in the upcoming season of the FIH Pro League could be made possible with the help of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), a media report has claimed. The Pakistan hockey team has been invited by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to take part in the next edition of the FIH Pro League alongside India after New Zealand pulled out last month. Initially, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) was given time till 12 August to confirm its participation, but a report in the Dawn on Tuesday stated that the hockey association has managed to secure an extension till 20 August as they are currently involved in negotiations with the national government. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Pakistan hockey team will reportedly need 700 million Pakistani Rupees (approximately $2.5 million) to compete in the FIH Pro League, and have been forced to approach the Pakistan Sports Board due to a lack of funds. The matter has now reached the doors of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as we reported earlier. However, a latest report in Telecom Asia on Monday has claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Board has agreed to fund the Pakistan hockey team. The Telecom Asia report further added that PCB's help will come at a significant cost as the cricket board has decided to 'handle all financial and administrative responsibilities' of the Pakistan hockey team, effectively taking over their entire campaign. 'It's confirmed. PCB will take care of all the financial and administrative aspects of it, with no interference from the PHF. PCB will appoint its own personnel and possibly contract event organisers to execute the planned move,' the source told Telecom Asia. 'If the PCB funds the Pro League, PHF will have no control over financial transactions.' As per sources, PHF wants to maintain its control over the matter, but doesn't have many options. Also, the PCB's proposed funding will reportedly come from government funds earmarked for youth development, now repurposed to support hockey's pressing requirements.

PSBs have 33,000 vacancies, use 1 lakh contractual and outsourced workers

Nearly 33,000 vacant positions existed in India's public sector banks (PSBs) as at the end of June, with these 12 lenders utilising more than 1 lakh contract and outsourced workers, according to data provided by the Finance Ministry to Parliament on Monday. As per a written reply in response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that as on June 30, as many as 32,567 positions were vacant at state-owned banks across officers, clerks, and sub-staff. The split was as follows: 17,500 vacant officer positions, 12,861 clerks, and 2,206 sub-staff. 'The requirement of manpower in each PSB is determined by the respective PSB keeping in view various factors which include, interalia, business requirement, spread of activities, superannuation and other unplanned exits. Appointment of officers and staff is done accordingly by the PSBs and it varies from year to year based on their requirements,' Chaudhary said, adding that in the last five years, a total of 1.49 lakh staff had been recruited by PSBs, with another 48,570 employees in the process of being hired for 2025-26. To be sure, the vacant positions account for just over 4 per cent of the total manpower PSBs require. As at the end of the June quarter, PSBs had a requirement of 7.91 lakh, and had filled 7.58 lakh – or 95.9 per cent – of them. Interestingly, the number of staff required by PSBs has been steadily declining. From 7.9 lakh in 2020-21, the number of employees at India's state-owned banks declined in each of the next three years, according to data furnished by the Minister of State for Finance to the Rajya Sabha on July 22. In 2021-22, the number of PSB employees was down 1.6 per cent, and fell another 1.3 per cent in 2022-23, before posting another 1.6 per cent fall in 2023-24. The last financial year, 2024-25, saw a marginal increase of 0.4 per cent to 7.58 lakh. Over the aforementioned five-year period, only four PSBs reported an increase in the number of employees: Bank of Maharashtra (up 16 per cent), Punjab & Sind Bank (up 15 per cent), Central Bank of India (up 2 per cent), and Punjab National Bank (up 1 per cent). Leading the staff shedders was Indian Overseas Bank, whose headcount was down 11 per cent in 2024-25 compared to 2020-21. On the whole, the number of PSB employees was down 4 per cent in 2024-25, the finance ministry had told the Rajya Sabha on July 22. The decline in the number of PSB employees has occurred despite a rise in their business. In March 2024, the loans given by PSBs stood at Rs 85 lakh crore, up 38 per cent from March 2021 – the period during which these banks reduced the number of employees on their books in each of the three years and by a total of almost 35,000. Meanwhile, on Monday, Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha that PSBs utlitised the services of as many as 1.01 lakh outsourced or contractual workers as at the end of June. These staff, the Minister of State for Finance said, are used for non-core activities of banks such as housekeeping, security guards, and ATM guards, among others, and were in line with the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines. Pakistan-Iran Nuclear Nexus Triggers Alarm Bells in US, Big Trade Pact Raises Eyebrows In India

In a move with deep geopolitical implications, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has openly supported Iran's right to develop nuclear capability for peaceful purposes, just weeks after Israel and the United States jointly bombed Iranian nuclear sites. This bold endorsement comes during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's two-day state visit to Islamabad, where both nations signed major bilateral trade deals and pledged cooperation on anti-terrorism. The development has triggered strategic alarm in both New Delhi and Washington. India, a key player in the Indo-Pacific, is watching this growing Iran-Pakistan nexus with concern amid rising regional instability. Meanwhile, the US may impose sanctions or retaliatory moves, especially under Trump's aggressive foreign policy doctrine. Has a new axis of defiance emerged in South Asia? And what could it mean for India, Israel, and the global balance of power?#iranpakistan #irannuclearprogram #shehbazsharif #masoudpezeshkian #iranisraelconflict #pakistanforeignpolicy #nucleardiplomacy #usiranrelations #trumpiran #middleeastgeopolitics #iranrightsnuclear #israeliranwar #breakingnews #iranpaktraderelations #uncharternuclear #india #breakingnews #trending #bharat #toi #toibharat #indianews Read More
