Scarlett Johansson calls for AI laws after fake video of celebrities condemning Kanye West's antisemitism goes viral

Scarlett Johansson is condemning antisemitism and calling for legislation to protect the public from artificial intelligence after a deepfake video of her and other celebrities, created with the technology, widely circulated on social media this week.
The AI video showed an image of Johansson in a T-shirt emblazoned with a hand and middle finger extended, a Jewish star and Kanye West's name. Though fake, the video implied she and others were responding to West's most recent antisemitic remarks and a swastika shirt he was selling on his Yeezy website, before it was pulled down by Shopify.
'It has been brought to my attention by family members and friends, that an AI-generated video featuring my likeness, in response to an antisemitic view, has been circulating online and gaining traction,' Johansson said in a statement obtained by CNN. 'I am a Jewish woman who has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind. But I also firmly believe that the potential for hate speech multiplied by AI is a far greater threat than any one person who takes accountability for it. We must call out the misuse of AI, no matter its messaging, or we risk losing a hold on reality.'
Johansson's statement continued, 'I have unfortunately been a very public victim of AI, but the truth is that the threat of AI affects each and every one of us. There is a 1000 foot wave coming regarding AI that several progressive countries, not including the United States, have responded to in a responsible manner. It is terrifying that the US government is paralyzed when it comes to passing legislation that protects all of its citizens against the imminent dangers of AI.'
The fake video also included AI-generated imagery of Adam Levine, Mila Kunis, Lenny Kravitz, Mark Zuckerberg, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Stiller, Natalie Portman, David Schwimmer and others, set to 'Hava Nagila,' a Jewish folk song that is typically played at celebratory cultural events.
Johansson has been one of the most vocal celebrities to take a stand the use of AI without consent. Last year, the Marvel star lawyered up in a fight against OpenAI as she spoke out about a synthetic voice 'eerily similar' to hers being used for ChatGPT.
In her statement on Wednesday, Johansson called on elected officials to take legislative action against AI abuses.
'I urge the U.S government to make the passing of legislation limiting AI use a top priority,' she said. 'It is a bipartisan issue that enormously affects the immediate future of humanity at large.'
The AI video was created by Ori Bejerano, who describes himself as a generative AI expert on his Instagram bio. His original post of the video includes a notice that reads, 'This content was digitally crated or altered with AI to seem real.'
'It's time to stop being silent and response to antisemites like Kanye West in the strongest way possible,' Bejerano's Instagram caption, written in Hebrew and translated to English by CNN, read in part. 'We must demand from the social networks to stop giving stage to antisemitism and hatred.'
While Johansson is the only celebrity in the fake video to speak out against the use of AI so far, some others have previously spoken out against West.
Over the weekend, before his Super Bowl ad aired, 'Friends' star Schwimmer pleaded with Elon Musk to block West from X.
'We can't stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk,' Schwimmer wrote on Instagram. 'Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X. That's twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews.'
West, who now goes by Ye, deactivated his X account late Sunday night.
Hen Mazzig, co-founder of the Tel Aviv Institute, an organization that works to combat Jewish hate and misinformation across social media, weighed in on the AI video.
'Misusing AI is dangerous, no doubt,' Mazzig wrote on X. 'But you know what's even more dangerous? Unchecked antisemitic hate being platformed to millions every single day.'

In effect, the breakup will separate WBD's flagship streaming service, HBO Max, along with its movie and television production operations, from its cable networks and news offerings, which include CNN, TNT, and many other networks. When it's all said and done, the separation will more or less undo the merger between Warner and Discovery that occurred in 2022, when WarnerMedia was spun off from the mobile and wireless giant AT&T. Here's how it'll all break down once the dust settles in 2026: 'Global Networks,' as company management refers to it, will include many of WBD's entertainment, news, and sports brands. That includes TV networks like CNN, Discovery, and TNT Sports in the United States. But there will be differences depending on international regions and countries, and depending on specific rights agreements. Global Networks will also house Bleacher Report and certain digital products, like the Discovery+ streaming service. Gunnar Wiedenfels, WBD's current CFO, will become the president and CEO of Global Networks. 'Streaming and Studios' will become the home of the company's development and production assets, and more. It will include Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, and their respective film and television libraries. David Zaslav, WBD's current CEO, will remain CEO of WBD Streaming & Studios. During a conference call on Monday morning, Zaslav said 'we're focusing on the next stage of transformation' of WBD, and that the separation will 'allow each of these strong companies to achieve their maximum potential.' 'Each company will have its own dedicated management team and board,' Zaslav said, with 'unique objectives and priorities.' He added that 'we expect all the factors to come together to unlock value—these companies will be better aligned with shareholders.' Wiedenfels, joining Zaslav on the call, said that 'the whole concept of the separation is to create two strong and well positioned companies—we feel very confident about the compelling nature about both portfolios,' adding that he saw the separation as 'a natural progression of WBD.' Both companies will be publicly traded. Moreover, the global networks business will hold up to a 20% retained stake in the streaming business. In the short term, Warner Bros Discovery stock (Nasdaq: WBD) was up about 7.59% in late-morning trading on Monday after the announcement. But the stock is flat year to date. Last week, shareholders voted to reject pay packages for top executives including Zaslav, although the vote was largely symbolic. WBD, since its merger a few years ago, has struggled with debt, rounds of layoffs and rebranding. (Notably, HBO Go became HBO Max, then Max, and is now back to HBO Max again). But Zaslav sounds upbeat about the future, and said the two companies coexisting should help each prosper. 'When we put these businesses together in the last three years, we built them out, and we paid down debt,' Zaslav said. 'We believe [the separation] gives us a lot more flexibility in the future.' Popular TikTok star leaves US after being detained
LAS VEGAS -- LAS VEGAS (AP) — Khaby Lame, the world's most popular TikTok personality with millions of followers, has left the U.S. after being detained by immigration agents in Las Vegas for allegedly overstaying his visa. The Senegalese-Italian influencer, whose legal name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was detained Friday at Harry Reid International Airport but was allowed to leave the country without a deportation order, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed in a statement. Lame arrived in the U.S. on April 30 and 'overstayed the terms of his visa,' the ICE spokesperson said. The Associated Press sent a message seeking comment Tuesday to the email address listed on Lame's Instagram account. He has not publicly commented on his detainment. His detainment and voluntary departure from the U.S. comes amid President Donald Trump's escalating crackdown on immigration, including raids in Los Angeles that sparked days of protests against ICE, as the president tests the bounds of his executive authority. A voluntary departure — which was granted to Lame — allows those facing removal from the U.S. to avoid a deportation order on their immigration record, which could prevent them from being allowed back into the U.S. for up to a decade. The 25-year-old rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated 'life hacks." He has over 162 million followers on TikTok alone. The Senegal-born influencer moved to Italy when he was an infant with his working class parents and has Italian citizenship. His internet fame quickly evolved. He signed a multi-year partnership with designer brand Hugo Boss in 2022. In January, he was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
