TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the hosting of major sports tournaments in the district can serve as a platform to unearth student athletic talent and foster unity. He expressed his deep appreciation to the Sabah Education Department and the Tambunan District Education Office for selecting Tambunan as the host for this year's State-level Sabah Schools Sports Council (MSSS) athletics championship. 'This championship is not merely a competition, but a platform to develop students who are disciplined, competitive and possess a strong fighting spirit. Noble values such as mutual respect, teamwork and leadership are essential in building a progressive society,' he said when officiating the MSSS athletics championship at the Sports Complex here, Sunday. Dr Jeffrey's speech was read by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin. Dr Jeffrey, who is also Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, emphasised that such championships can serve as a springboard for young athletes to shine at the State and national levels, and possibly on the international stage in the future. As the elected representative for Tambunan, he also took the opportunity to introduce the unique charms of the district to participants and accompanying officials from across Sabah, saying Tambunan is known as the 'Switzerland of the East' due to its natural beauty and cool climate. It is not only physically attractive but is also rich in the history, culture and heritage of the Kadazandusun community. 'Among the main attractions in this district are the Mahua Waterfall, the Rafflesia Conservation Garden, the Mat Sator Memorial and the Sinurambi View Point. There are also traditional dishes such as linopot, tuhau, bambangan and hinava which are a source of pride for the local people,' he added. Dr Jeffrey urged all athletes to compete with true sportsmanship and uphold the values of integrity and fair competition. He said winning or losing is not the main measure of success – what matters most is the experience, knowledge and friendships formed throughout the championship. He also express appreciation to all teachers, coaches and parents who play a crucial role in supporting and guiding children in the field of sports. A total of 24 contingents are competing in the four-day MSSS athletics championship. They are Beaufort, Keningau, Tambunan, Ranau, Sandakan, Tawau, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, Papar, Penampang, Tuaran, Beluran, Kota Kinabalu, Kinabatangan, Kuala Penyu, Kudat, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Pensiangan, Pitas, Semporna, Sipitang, Telupid/Tongod and Tenom. Also present were Sabah Education Director Datuk Raisin Saidin, Tambunan District Education Officer Haison Jahudin, district education officers from across Sabah, principals, headmasters, teachers and parents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Thailand-Cambodia Conflict: SEA Games Preparations Remain On Track

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) — Malaysia will continue to monitor the developments of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia ahead of the SEA Games scheduled to be held this December, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. She said the government, through the Foreign Ministry, is closely monitoring the situation but so far, there has been no change in the country's sports contingent planning. 'We are, of course, worried about the trend but we know Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is doing his best to talk to both countries for a ceasefire. Of course, we definitely want peace in this arena. bootstrap slideshow 'And we know the SEA Games (to be hosted by Thailand) is coming up in December. We do hope that this matter can be resolved amicably and also speedily. 'For the National Sports Council (NSC), we are always following not just the news coming in, but we also have to listen to the Foreign Ministry for guidance and nothing has changed (for Malaysia),' she said after opening the 2025 National Combat Sports Championships held at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. The Combat Sports Championships meet brings together 2,000 athletes from all over the country who compete in the five main disciplines of combat sports, namely silat, wushu, karate-do, muay thai and wrestling. Hannah stressed that combat sports need to be given support equivalent to Olympic-status sports and the ministry is committed to helping in the development of the discipline. In another development, she said the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) views the proposal by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to establish a National Sports Trust Fund to reduce dependence on government funds as a positive step. 'As I stated, sports associations need to have their own initiative to find funds. They can't depend on the government.

MNCF determined to resolve Sea Games road cycling funding issue

KUALA LUMPUR: There is still hope that professional riders from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) will represent the country at this year's Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20). The two teams had previously stated that they will not release their riders for the biennial games if the National Sports Council (NSC) does not meet their requests for funding. MPC had also requested for new time trial bikes. The Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) today (July 23) announced that they will submit a new Sea Games budget to NSC within one week. The new budget will take into consideration requests from TSG and MPC. Representatives from NSC, MNCF, MPC and TSG attended a four-hour meeting in Bukit Jalil today to discuss preparations for the games. MNCF president president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill, technical director John Beasley and road cycling committee chairman Norazman Abu Samah were among those present. "I feel things are moving positively, there is nothing in this world that cannot be resolved through discussion," said Amarjit. "NSC have always had an open door policy and they are willing to consider any additional support required for the Sea Games. "I have asked the (MNCF) road committee to prepare a detailed budget for the Sea Games which we will submit within a week. We have to be quick because the Sea Game is just a few months away. "I believe most of the requests from TSG and MPC are acceptable. "I can't speak on behalf of NSC, however, I believe they will accept some of the requests but maybe not all. We are hoping for a positive outcome." TSG had previously requested RM250,000 from NSC to cover training and competition expenses (at warm up races) to prepare their riders for the Sea Games. It is understood that MPC had been seeking a similar amount. NSC had early this year allocated RM300,000 to MNCF for road cycling though only RM196,000 remains after RM104,000 was spent on preparing and sending riders to compete at the Asian Championships in Thailand earlier this year. Amarjit said the response from both professional teams was positive after the meeting. "I think they were both quite receptive, they understood the situation and that NSC also has constraints," said Amarjit. "When we left the meeting, everyone had smiles on their faces which is good. "At the end of the day, we just want to make sure we have the best riders representing the country at the Sea Games." Amarjit disclosed that nine riders have been shortlisted for the Sea Games squad - four from TSG, four from MPC and one from St George Continental Cycling Team. Ren Bao Tsen is currently on the books at St George, which is a UCI continental squad from Australia.
