Nigeria's women's soccer team rises above poor management to clinch continental trophy
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted and splashed gifts on the triumphant national women's soccer team who overcame poor preparations and missing payments to win their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations title. HT Image The Super Falcons' comeback 3-2 victory over host Morocco in Saturday's thrilling final was applauded by Tinubu and many in Nigeria, a soccer-loving nation where passion and hard work often triumphs over institutional challenges. The continental success, analysts say, papers over the mismanagement of the women's team by the country's authorities. The success of the country had come in spite of the country. 'They have been able to dominate even though the Nigerian soccer authorities do not put as much funding, care, attention, and planning into the way the women's national team is run,' Solace Chukwu, a Lagos-based soccer analyst, told The Associated Press. The team had been owed match bonuses for years, once resulting in a training boycott in 2022. Even as they triumphed on the way to the finals in Morocco, the backlog of payments was only approved by the president days before Saturday's final. They also could not hold competitive friendly matches and their training kits were said to not have been available. It is a common problem in Nigeria where sporting competitions are often dogged by issues of underfunding, corruption, and mismanagement that have led to high-profile scandals resulting in athletes choosing to represent other countries in protest. Women's teams are affected the most, partly because of how women have always been viewed in the Nigerian society, according to Oluwashina Okeleji, a sport analyst with focus on Africa. 'The argument from the (Nigerian) federation is that the men bring more money than the women, but the truth is the women bring most prestige, honours, and titles to Nigeria,' Okeleji said. A spokesperson for the Nigeria Football Federation, the country's governing soccer body, declined to respond to the allegations. The Nigerian women's team has exercised a near-total dominance in African soccer, which is partly credited to a head-start in the women's game. Nigeria created the first soccer league for women in 1978, years before their counterparts on the continent. However, the gains have not catapulted the team to similar achievements on the global stage in what analysts say is a failure of the authorities to capitalize on this early advantage. 'The men's team is huge generally within the administration of Nigerian football as the cash cow,' Chukwu said. The gifts now promised by the president, including money and property, have not convinced the fans. 'This one-time payment and apartment does not make any sense. For what? What they need is investment in the facilities, the staff, and payment. The lack of investment in women's football is one of the reasons why it is not as high quality as the men's," Funmi Obasa, a football fan in Abuja who follows the women's team, told AP.

6.5L IPL jerseys stolen from BCCI office, guard held
Mumbai: Taking home an IPL jersey could be a desire for many. A security guard took this a bit too far by spiriting away a carton full of IPL 2025 jerseys. The 40-year-old has been arrested for allegedly stealing 261 jerseys worth Rs 6.52 lakh — each costing around Rs 2,500 –– lifted from a storeroom at the office of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) at Wankhede Stadium, Churchgate. The arrested guard, Farooque Aslam Khan, sold the jerseys to fund his online gambling addiction, the police said. While the jerseys were of different cricket teams, it was not immediately clear whether these were meant for players or for the general public, said a source. The guard, who lives in Mira Road, sold the jerseys to an online jersey dealer from Haryana, with whom he had got in touch on social media. "The guard claims he haggled a bit with the online dealer, but he hasn't yet specified how much he got for the deal." The jerseys were despatched by courier. The police summoned the online dealer from Haryana for investigation. "The online dealer says he was not aware that the jerseys had been stolen," a police source said. "The guard had told the man in Haryana that the jerseys were part of a stock clearance sale due to renovation work that was going on at the office." Only 50 of the jerseys have been recovered. The guard got the money into his bank account from the online dealer. "He [the guard] claims he lost it all to online gambling," the source said, adding that they are checking his bank account details to verify his claim. A BCCI official lodged a complaint at Marine Drive police station on July 17.

Virat Kohli was set to be sacked as RCB captain in 2019, reveals ex IPL-teammate
Former England and Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Moeen Ali has revealed that the Bengaluru-based franchise came close to replacing Virat Kohli as captain as early as 2019. Speaking to India Today's sister channel SportsTak, Moeen said Parthiv Patel was all but appointed as captain of the franchise during Gary Kirsten's tenure as head Ali was part of RCB between 2019 and 2020 before moving on to Chennai Super Kings, where he enjoyed the most decorated spell of his Kohli remains one of RCB's longest-serving captains. While he led the team in a few matches from 2011, he officially took over from Daniel Vettori as full-time captain in 2013. Kohli continued in the role until 2021, when he stepped down citing workload management. "Yes, I think he was. I'm quite sure he was," Moeen said when asked whether Parthiv Patel had been considered for the RCB captaincy."In the final year when Gary Kirsten was there-after the first year, I believe-Parthiv was in line to become captain. He had a brilliant cricketing brain," Moeen added."That was the talk at the time. I don't know what happened or why it didn't materialise, but I'm sure he was seriously considered for the role." After leading RCB to the final in 2016, Kohli struggled to replicate that success in the following seasons. The team failed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive years, finishing last in both 2017 and 2019, and managing only a sixth-place finish in 2018. While Kohli's batting remained a mainstay for the side, his captaincy came under scrutiny after two bottom-placed finishes in three years, following the heartbreak of the 2016 RCB staged a resurgence in 2020, reaching the playoffs as Kohli's partnership with coach Simon Katich began to bear Kohli's departure from the role after the 2021 season, RCB handed the captaincy to Faf du Plessis. The team maintained a level of consistency in subsequent seasons. Their long wait for a maiden IPL title finally ended earlier this year under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. Kohli played a pivotal role in the 2025 title-winning campaign-mentoring Rajat on the field while letting his bat do the talking, amassing 657 runs in 15 Patel, meanwhile, did not feature in the IPL after the 2019 season. The former India wicketkeeper retired with 2,848 runs from 139 matches, having won titles with both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Renowned for his astute cricketing mind, Parthiv joined Gujarat Titans as a mentor in 2025 and made an immediate impact in the role.- EndsTrending Reel
