Cybersecurity Malaysia drafts enforcement strategy to boost digital trust
The strategy, now in its final draft stage, was presented to the minister last week and will be submitted to the Cabinet for further input and approval this year.
Gobind highlighted that a key focus of the strategy is creating an ecosystem centred on digital trust. He emphasised the importance of establishing a dedicated enforcement agency to ensure the effectiveness of these measures.
'Having measures in place without a proper enforcement mechanism would be ineffective,' he said during a press conference after launching the ASEAN 5G & OT Security Summit (5GOT).
The minister noted that the final decision on the enforcement framework will rest with the Cabinet. 'But that will be something for the Cabinet to decide as we move along,' he added. - Bernama

Responding to a query from Kamal Ashaari (PN- Kuala Krau) regarding the government's efforts in developing self-defence capabilities, Mohamed Khaled outlined the ministry's strategy, which includes developing technology, weapon systems, maintenance infrastructure, and strengthening local human capital. These efforts aim to reduce dependence on foreign powers and improve responses to threats. Key initiatives include empowering the Defence Science and Technology Research Institute (Stride) as a centre of excellence in Southeast Asia and restructuring the Malaysian Industry Council for Defence Enforcement & Security (MIDES) into the Defence Industry Strategic Council to enhance governance. The ministry is also developing a comprehensive policy for the defence sector's Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP) and establishing a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) to strengthen industrial development linkages within the local defence ecosystem. To further boost self-reliance and innovation in defence technology, the ministry is finalising the National Defence Industry Policy, set to be presented to the Cabinet in August. Mohamed Khaled added that the government is considering research and development collaborations with partner countries, such as Turkiye, in the defence sector.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government is crafting the National Artificial Intelligence Action Plan 2026–2030 to establish the country as a regional AI leader and improve its global AI rankings. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo revealed that Malaysia currently ranks 26th in the Stanford HAI AI Index (2023) and 24th in the Oxford Insights Government AI Readiness Index 2024. 'On local talent development, the government has already rolled out several large-scale initiatives to boost the nation's workforce readiness for AI adoption,' Gobind said in Parliament. He highlighted the 'AI for My Future' programme, a collaboration with Microsoft, designed to train nearly 800,000 Malaysians through interactive modules. The minister was responding to Batu Gajah MP Sivakumar Varatharaju Naidu's query on Malaysia's AI preparedness, covering technology transfer, talent development, and governance integration.
