World Bank predicts India dhoom amid global gloom

Time of Indiaa day ago

New Delhi: The
World Bank
has lowered India's growth forecast for FY26 to 6.3% from 6.7% estimated in January, though it's projected to remain one of the fastest growing economies globally. The country's FY27 growth is also seen 0.2 percentage point lower at 6.5%, according to the World Bank's latest Global Economic Prospects (GEP) report.
The World Bank attributed the reduction in expected growth to weaker export performance on the part of key trade partners and rising global trade barriers.
Investment growth is also expected to decelerate amid rising global policy uncertainty, the report said.
India's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 6.5% in FY25, according to official data released last month. Last week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) retained its 6.5% growth projection for FY26 as it cut the key interest rate by a higher-than-expected half a percentage point to support growth.
Global growth is expected to slow to 2.3% in 2025 compared with 2.7% projected in January, amid the rise in trade barriers and an uncertain policy environment, marking the slowest pace of expansion since 2008, excluding periods of recession.
Live Events
The US' growth forecast has been revised downwards to 1.4% in 2025 from 2.3% projected in January by the multilateral lender. China's growth projection remains unchanged at 4.5% in 2025.
India: A Bright Spot
"Emerging-market and developing economies reaped the rewards of trade integration but now find themselves on the frontlines of a global trade conflict," said M Ayhan Kose, World Bank's deputy chief economist and director of the prospects group. "India continues to grow faster than any other major economy."
The South Asian region is likely to face a slowdown with growth expected at 5.8% in 2025 compared with an estimated 6% in 2024, due to the impact of rising trade barriers, dampened business confidence and weaker investment, according to the World Bank.
Growth is then anticipated to increase to an average of 6.2% annually in 2026-27, driven by improving activity in India and elsewhere, aligning with the region's potential estimates, it added.
Per-capita income growth in South Asia is estimated to stabilise at 5%, on average, over 2025-27, which would further reduce poverty. However, excluding India, per-capita income growth is expected to rise to 3% in 2027 from 2.1% in 2025.
Between 2011-12 and 2022-23, nearly 270 million people in India were lifted out of extreme poverty in India, according to the latest data released by the World Bank.

Is there a market rotation in favour of IT, pharma and auto? Dhananjay Sinha answers

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads CEO & Co-Head– Institutional Equities,, says the IT sector is showing signs of recovery as US-China relations improve, easing investor concerns about order book uncertainty. Potential US tax cuts could further boost the sector. Significant corrections in IT stocks have created attractive valuations, leading to a possible rotation of investments into IT. Pharma and auto sectors may also benefit from this you look at the market profile, there has been a good rebound, I would say, after the initial correction. If you look at the market capitalisation of NSE, it had actually shrunk by almost like Rs 90 lakh crore to the lows in February or end of February and from there on, the market cap erosion has actually narrowed quite substantially because of the recovery that has happened. We have recovered almost like Rs 70 lakh crore out of the balance is only Rs 20 lakh crore from the peak level that we saw in September last year. So, I would say what has happened is that sectors have taken turns to rebound. We had RBI also infusing liquidity substantially, so that has also played out. What is happening now is the IT sector which is actually gradually coming back and the fact that there was an overhang on the sector with the recession risk being priced into the US economy and it was a spillover effect of the US-China conflict, the engagement that is happening between US and China in thawing the lock jam is something that can be seen as positive for the IT sector because a lot of investors were concerned about the order book uncertainty that it had created.I would say the overhang is actually receding. There is also a possibility that the market might start pricing in tax cuts in the US as well. These are the two things that are moving in favour of the IT sector. IT stocks have seen significant correction and there is a certain amount of valuation that people might be looking at. All put together, there does seem to be this whole rotation across sectors moving in favour of IT now. So, IT is one sector. There are other sectors like pharma where there is a possibility of rotation in favour of them. Auto is another one, news will have an effect on the alco-beverage companies. What the Maharashtra government has announced may create a certain amount of suspicion that other states might actually also announce. This could be because state governments are also struggling on the revenue side. There is a likelihood that people might expect or extrapolate this kind of a scenario in other states as well.I would say people will need to wait to see whether they get more clarity on this and whether this can create a trend. While we are positive fundamentally on space, we do have Allied Blenders in our list, but this is a regulatory risk that will need to settle down before we take a decisive view.

Airbus sees global aircraft fleet doubling by 2044, led by India

Airbus SE predicted the global commercial aircraft fleet will double in size to almost 50,000 planes over the next 20 years, spurred by rapid growth in markets like India, where a rising middle class increasingly takes to air travel. The global in-service fleet will swell by 24,480 units to 49,210 aircraft in 2044, Airbus predicted in its latest global market forecast that includes both its own planes and those of rivals like Boeing Co. Most of the growth will come from single-aisle aircraft like the Airbus A320 family or Boeing's 737, which form the backbone of many airlines' fleets, Airbus said. India's domestic network will be the fastest growing aviation market over the next two decades, while China will be the biggest by capacity by then, the plane manufacturer said. Globally, Airbus expects passenger traffic to advance 3.6% a year over the long term, with traffic to the Middle East acting as another key growth driver. Commercial aircraft are among the longest-cycle industrial products, giving Airbus and Boeing insight into travel trends stretching out decades. Airbus issued its latest outlook against a backdrop of tense global trade negotiations that threaten to complicate the movement of planes and their parts, potentially denting output and jet deliveries. Still, Airbus said airlines haven't stopped purchasing new models even as the uncertainty created by President Donald Trump's global tariffs prompts consumers to rein in spending and forces some carriers to take a dimmer view on the rest of the year. Live Events You Might Also Like: 1,260 aircraft due: IndiGo, Air India among Airbus' biggest customers with largest backlog 'With the possible exception of maybe the more domestic US market, we have not seen an inflection fundamentally in demand from our customers,' Christian Scherer, the chief executive officer of Airbus's commercial aircraft unit, said at a briefing in Toulouse, where Airbus is based. 'We see continued traction and demand for our products.' While supply-chain snarls that built up during the pandemic are gradually easing, Airbus said it continues to see a shortfall in some parts. For example, a lack of engines from CFM International on its workhorse A320neo model as well as toilets on its flagship A350 long-haul jet have hobbled deliveries, Scherer said. India is already the world's third-largest domestic aviation market, and the growth in the number of more affluent people makes the nation of more than 1.4 billion people a crucial driver of future aircraft demand. At the International Air Transport Association annual general meeting in New Delhi this month, airlines — both foreign and domestic — announced a range of initiatives to start or increase services to and from the South Asian nation. The country has become a major buyer of aircraft. Air India Ltd. has placed orders for 570 planes from Airbus and Boeing since 2023. IndiGo, the low-cost specialist, has an order book of more than 900 Airbus planes, including a recently expanded purchase of 60 A350 widebody aircraft. HDB Financial Services IPO To Raise Rs 12,500-Crore: Check Opening Date, Price, Lot Size, Other Details

Last Updated: HDB Financial Services Ltd plans a Rs 12,500-crore IPO in mid-July 2025, potentially the year's biggest, to comply with RBI regulations and target a diverse loan book. HDB Financial Services Ltd, the non-banking financial arm of HDFC Bank, is expected to launch its Rs 12,500-crore initial public offering (IPO) around mid-July 2025, according to a report by Moneycontrol, citing sources. If launched as planned, the public issue will become the biggest IPO of 2025 so far, surpassing the Rs 8,750-crore issue by Hexaware Technologies earlier this year. The move signals a strong revival in the Indian primary markets. HDB Financial IPO Opening Date The company is expected to file its Updated Draft Red Herring Prospectus (UDRHP) by the end of this month, according to the report. The IPO could hit the markets by early to mid-July, depending on market conditions. HDB Financial IPO Issue Size The IPO will aim to raise Rs 12,500 crore, making it one of the largest public issues by a non-banking financial company (NBFC) in recent years. While the price band and lot size are yet to be officially announced, those details are expected to be included in the Red Herring Prospectus (RHP), which will be filed after regulatory approvals of the UDRHP. Founded in 2007, HDB Financial Services provides a broad range of retail loans under three business verticals — enterprise lending, asset finance, and consumer finance. It focuses on both secured and unsecured loans, including personal loans and loans against property, particularly catering to underbanked segments. As of September 30, 2024, the company had a gross loan book of Rs 98,620 crore, with a CAGR of 20.93% from March 2022. Its FY24 profit stood at Rs 2,460 crore, with a CAGR of 55.9% over FY22-FY24. In its DRHP, the company noted that its loan book is highly diversified, with the top 20 customers contributing less than 0.36% of total gross loans. The average loan ticket size was around Rs 1.45 lakh as of September 30, 2024. The company had initially filed its DRHP on October 30, 2023, and received SEBI's approval at the end of May 2025. A UDRHP (Updated Draft Red Herring Prospectus) is a revised version of the DRHP that includes all regulatory feedback and updated financial and operational data. Filing the UDRHP is a prerequisite before the final RHP, after which the IPO can be launched.
