Carlton hold off old rivals to end tough year in style
Starting the season with hopes of winning their first premiership in 30 years, the Blues finish it six games out of the top eight, but at least with some momentum heading into 2026.
In a low-key Thursday night, shunned by free-to-air broadcaster the Seven Network, Carlton withstood a Bombers burst at the start of the last quarter to win 13.12 (90) to 8.8 (56).
Essendon had periods where they looked capable of causing a boilover, but were unable to lift enough in captain Zach Merrett's 250th game.
Hardworking midfielder George Hewett was superb for the Blues, collecting 36 disposals after having 25 and eight clearances by halftime.
Tom De Koning was again influential back in his preferred position in the ruck, in what was likely his last game for Carlton before accepting a monster deal to join St Kilda next season.
Sam Walsh starred in his second game back from a long absence due to a foot injury, gathering 28 disposals before being tactically subbed out at three-quarter time.
Small forward Francis Evans continued his stunning four-week patch, booting three goals in what could earn him a new contract at Carlton.
At his third club after earning a rookie contract earlier this year, Evans has booted 11 goals in his last four games and is starting to look comfortable at AFL level.

It was the injury-hit Bombers' 12th-straight loss, and they still need to head to the Gold Coast for the last game of the home-and-away season on Wednesday night.
Veteran Dylan Shiel was prolific, without having a huge influence, in what could be one of his last AFL games.
It is understood Shiel has not been offered a contract with the Bombers for next year, but the former GWS flyer could explore his options to play elsewhere.

Meninga lashes out as Panthers premiership hero linked with move to Perth Bears
Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga has hit back at reports linking a number of stars to the new NRL franchise, with Panthers fan favourite Scott Sorensen among the latest to be tipped for a big-money switch. But Meninga says the reality is the Bears can't speak with any players until November 1, after shutting down some of the recent speculation. It's been widely reported that Meninga is eyeing superstars such as Cameron Munster and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui to become one of Perth's first marquee signings. It's been suggested the Bears are preparing a monster $7.5m deal for Gold Coast skipper Fa'asuamaleaui, who has an option in his current long-term deal that allows him to hit the open market on November 1. Four-time premiership-winning Penrith forward Sorensen is another name who has been linked with a switch to Perth. Veteran league reporter Phil Rothfield revealed this week that Sorensen is firmly in Meninga's sights, with the Panthers and New Zealand forward off contract at the end of 2026 and free to speak with rival clubs later this year. The experienced Panthers forward would add steel to the Bears' forward pack, in a similar way that Felise Kaufusi and the Bromwich brothers did when the Dolphins entered the competition. And with Sorensen off contract at the end of 2026, he'd be free to sign with the Bears for their inaugural season in 2027 as of November 1 this year. But Meninga said the truth about Sorensen and any other players being linked to the Bears, is that he is 'not allowed to talk to them' yet. The Perth coach says he understands that players coming off contract will naturally be linked the cashed-up franchise, but suggested any concrete links at this stage were purely speculation. 'All these people are being listed that we're interested in, they're all off contract next year. It's not that hard to put a list together. 'All these players are contracted and they're probably talking about staying on at their club a bit longer. We can't fit them in now. How am I going to say no to them all? 'It's difficult to keep the news out of the media. It's not created by us. People can make things up. We're not allowed to talk to them; we haven't expressed any interest. 'As I keep saying every week, if they're available we will probably talk to them. If we feel they're going to be a great addition to the roster, we will talk to them.' Sharks captain Cameron McInnes, Titans playmaker Jayden Campbell and Broncos outside backs Gehamat Shibasaki and Deine Mariner are among a number of other stars who've been linked to the Bears in recent days. Shibasaki and Mariner are both off contract at the end of 2026, and the Broncos have a well-documented salary cap squeeze to manage. Campbell and McInnes are also without a deal past 2026, and the signing of the Titans half would be a particularly huge coup for Meninga. Meninga will start building Perth's maiden NRL roster from November 1, and made it clear that their search for talent would extend far and wide when asked whether there were overseas-based player he planned on holding discussions with. NRL world divided after Trent Barrett and Gorden Tallis cop staggering 'ban'
NRL fans have had a mixed reaction amid revelations Kevin Walters is set to be blocked from taking Gorden Tallis and Trent Barrett to England for the Ashes tour. The revealed on Thursday that the NRL is set to reject an application from Walters to have Tallis on his Kangaroos staff when they travel to England for the three-Test tour in October. Walters is reportedly keen to have former Broncos teammate Tallis on the tour to act as a 'cultural figurehead' and impart on the players the importance of wearing the green and gold. Tallis played in Ashes series during his career, but none of the current players have had the honour because it hasn't been a thing for the last 20 years. Michael Chammas reported: "The proposed role was to focus on the culture and history of the Kangaroos, aimed at galvanising the team in the three-Test series." But the NRL has reportedly rejected the move because the governing body "didn't believe the role was necessary" and "believe Walters has the credentials to educate the players" himself. The same report also claims that Walters wanted to have Broncos assistant coaches Barrett and Ben Te'o on his Kangaroos staff, but the NRL has effectively banned them as well. The NRL reportedly doesn't want any coaches tied to NRL clubs working as Walters' assistants, opening the door for Super League coaches to get involved. It means Willie Peters (Hull KR coach), Adrian Lam (Leigh Leopards), Brad Arthur (Leeds Rhinos) and John Cartwright (Hull FC) are all in the frame to be on Walters' staff. Justin Holbrook was an assistant coach for the Kangaroos under Mal Meninga last year, but is also set to miss out because he works at the Roosters under Trent Robinson. Walters appointed Barrett and Te'o to their roles at the Broncos before he was sacked at the end of last year. New coach Michael Maguire retained them as his assistants, and they've helped lead the Broncos to a likely finals berth. Wayne Bennett blasts 'ridiculous' NRL stance The NRL's stance comes after they also blocked Wayne Bennett from becoming the Kangaroos coach. Bennett blasted the call as 'ridiculous' after the NRL and ARL Commission ruled him out because he's the Rabbitohs' head coach. 'They must think the Australian players can just coach themselves and us NRL coaches are just taking up money and space," Bennett said. 'We want the best players playing for Australia and we want the best players playing Origin - yet we don't want the best coaches in charge of the national team. 'This is not a shot at Kevin (Walters), he's been an NRL coach and he will do a great job, he's qualified, but what's the longer-term plan beyond Kevin? There's 17 clubs now (in the NRL) and there's going to be 18 and 19 soon (with Perth in 2027 and PNG in 2028). 'This policy rules out dozens of coaches. You've got the best coaches in the NRL and if they want to do it (coach the Kangaroos), then they should have the opportunity to do it. It's a silly rule, it's going to come back and hurt them at some point down the track, I can assure you of that.' There was a chain of thought that Smith could work as an assistant to Walters after missing out on the head-coaching role. 'I don't think Cameron will be involved,' Walters told . 'It's just not the right time for him to be involved. We'll let him do what he needs to do with his commentary and family and we'll get on with the tour. 'It's been a bit of a slow process (finalising support staff), but that's okay. I've spoken to (Justin Holbrook and Trent Barrett) but we're still contemplating what the makeup of the staff will be.' On social media, fans were heavily divided over the news that Tallis, Barrett and Te'o have been barred. While some felt Tallis would have been a great addition, others agreed his role would be unnecessary.

They're now the enemy: Swans coach ready to face Eagles
Sydney coach Dean Cox still has a great love for West Coast, but he will be treating his former club like the enemy when they clash in Perth. In a quirk of the fixtures, it's taken until the final round of the AFL season for Cox to get his first crack at coaching against the Eagles. Cox is a legend at West Coast after playing 290 games for the club across 14 seasons, including a pivotal role in the 2006 flag. The 44-year-old has endured a rocky start to senior coaching, losing five of his first seven games in charge this season as Sydney crashed out of finals contention. The Swans have been much better in the second half of the campaign with seven wins from their past 10 matches, and they'll be aiming to end 2025 on a high with a big victory over wooden spooners West Coast. Eagles fans were left shocked when Cox turned down the chance to take over as coach last year, but the club legend is still set to receive a warm welcome when he strolls out onto Optus Stadium on Saturday night. His premiership coach - John Worsfold - is now West Coast's head of football, and Cox is set to run into plenty of other familiar faces back in WA. "You always have fond memories of your time at one footy club and I love West Coast for every opportunity they gave me," Cox said. West Coast (1-21) are already guaranteed to receive the wooden spoon, and unless they cause a huge boilover against Sydney, they will finish with one win for the first time in their history. One bright note to come out of the tail-end of their season has been the form of Campbell Chesser, who looks set to earn a new deal after stringing together three promising games. Chesser was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 national draft, but injuries and poor form have restricted him to just 35 games across four years. The 22-year-old tallied a career-high 22 disposals in last week's 94-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, and he will be aiming to finish off the season strongly.
