One-way traffic plan for RK Puram as twin bridge takes shape
'The government of Telangana has granted administrative sanction for the project. ₹210 crore has been earmarked for the construction of the new ROB and another ₹35 crore for the Railway Under Bridge (RUB),' informed the Executive Engineer of the GHMC's North Zone.
Built over twenty years ago, the existing two-lane bidirectional bridge has long served as a lifeline for commuters between Secunderabad and the city's expanding eastern corridor. However, with rapid urbanisation and a sharp spike in vehicular volume, the structure is now struggling to keep pace, especially during peak hours.
The maintenance of the flyover has been under the watch of the GHMC's Engineering section. To address its ageing infrastructure, tenders were recently invited for a restoration project that includes replacement of the wearing coat, expansion joints, and repairs to the crash barriers. GHMC officials said the work will commence soon after finalisation of the executing agency.
A statement from the GHMC said that a broader solution is also in the pipeline. 'Traffic studies have prompted the decision to construct a new three-lane unidirectional ROB parallel to the existing structure. This will be complemented by a parallel RUB to further ease the load and improve flow in the corridor,' the statement mentioned.
Joint inspections have been carried out with railway officials, and the General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) for both structures have been submitted. The railways, in turn, have sought centage charges of ₹41.52 lakh for the ROB and ₹66.70 lakh for the RUB. Payment processing is underway, after which tenders will be floated post railway approval of the GADs.
'Once completed, the existing bridge will be converted to a unidirectional structure, easing congestion and enhancing overall traffic management in the area,' the executive engineer stated.

HYDERABAD: The city heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday evening as the strike by GHMC waste transport workers was called off after successful talks between the management of Ramky, CITU leaders and the Labour department. The strike, which had brought garbage collection to a halt for two days and threatened to disrupt sanitation ahead of Ganesh festivities, ended after the management agreed to a wage hike — Rs 6,500 for Grade-1 drivers, Rs 6,300 for Grade-2 drivers and Rs 5,000 for unskilled helpers. The final agreement will be signed on August 22, CITU general secretary P Bhaskar said. During the strike, garbage had piled up at 42 transfer stations as 2,000–2,500 drivers and helpers refused to transport waste to the Jawaharnagar dumping yard. Workers, led by the CITU, staged protests at the Labour Commissioner's office, citing low wages and delayed agreements. Contractors also flagged that GHMC's dues, amounting to over Rs 1,500 crore, had crippled operations, making it difficult to pay staff and maintain vehicles.

Transgender community to be employed in govt departments in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Seven months after the transgender traffic assistants scheme was rolled out by the Hyderabad traffic police, officials from the ministry of child and women welfare said members from the community will soon be employed on a larger scale as security staff in various other govt departments such as the GHMC, RTC, and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). The community, which has largely relied on menial jobs to make ends meet, will now get the chance to have a govt job and earn a monthly salary. "After the successful implementation of the traffic assistants scheme, we trust the competence of the community and believe they have the potential to achieve much more. This initiative will go a long way in helping them," said Anita Ramachandran, secretary to the govt, department of women and child welfare. Officials said that members from the community with educational qualifications will also get the opportunity to be employed in higher positions within these departments. "Unfortunately, many members of the community have not had access to education, and for higher-paying jobs, a specific skill set is required. However, those who do have the necessary educational background will be eligible for better opportunities," Ramachandran added. The traffic assistant initiative has been running successfully, with assistants earning around Rs 30,000 a month. Many of them have expressed satisfaction with their roles, noting both the financial stability it provides and the sense of dignity. "With the rising number of vehicles and the increasing traffic, increasing our workforce was the need of the hour. The assistants have done a fantastic job and made our jobs easier, and we hope that more members from the community will join our workforce soon," said Rahul Hegde, deputy commissioner (DCP) of traffic police-1. Govt officials also echoed similar sentiments and said the initiative is a step in the right direction to build a more inclusive society for the future. "GHMC represents the citizens of Hyderabad, and that includes the transgender community. We plan to take them as security guards in the parks in the city, and I'm sure they will do a great job," GHMC commissioner RV Karnan said. At present, officials said they are in the process of identifying the number of transgender individuals who can be employed under the initiative, with further details about permanency, salary and other benefits expected to be announced in due time. "We have identified about 20 jobs in the road transport department and 25 in GHMC. Once the chief minister gives his approval, the scheme will be introduced immediately after," Ramachandran said.

Strike continues, alternative arrangements made for garbage lifting
With the indefinite strike of work by the staff of solid waste concessionaire firm Re-Sustainability continuing for the second consecutive day, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials have ensured alternative arrangements for timely lifting of garbage. Additional Commissioner, Sanitation, C.N. Raghu Prasad informed that instructions have been issued to the Assistant Medical Officers, Health, to arrange for private vehicles for secondary transportation from garbage vulnerable points and road sweeping, with payment from Re-Sustainability. Tertiary transportation from the transfer stations to the solid waste management facility at Jawahar Nagar is continuing without a hiccup, as majority of the workers at these stations are recruited from GHMC, and belong to a different union. Serilingampally is the worst hit due to the strike, because it has the most workers directly recruited by Re-Sustainability, registered with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). A total 2,500 workers are in strike mode, severely hampering the daily garbage lifting ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. A protest was conducted at the Labour department's office by the workers under the banner of CITU. About 400 workers staged a sit-in demanding an agreement on wages. A charter of demands was already given to the officials of the concessionaire agency, before several rounds of negotiations were conducted. General Secretary of the CITU's State committee, Paladugu Bhaskar said the drivers and helpers work at 42 sites lacking basic facilities such as drinking water and toilets. He demanded that the Labour department continue its efforts to ensure wage revision.
