Commerce minister backs SRO relief, global exposure
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan has pledged full government support to the gems and jewellery sector to boost non-traditional exports.
During a meeting with the All Pakistan Small Gems Jewellers and Training Association (APSGTA), the minister assured policy support and global exposure for the sector. The APSGTA delegation, led by Secretary General Qari Muhammad Ashraf, urged revival of SRO 760 and exclusion from SRO 924, citing strong compliance over four years.
According to a statement released Thursday, the minister called the sector vital for export diversification. He stressed the need for balanced reforms, ease of doing business, and wider access for small exporters and artisans.
He praised APSGTA's engagement and said the ministry will forward its recommendations to the Prime Minister's Office for action.
To boost global visibility, he directed officials to ensure the sector's participation in international forums in France, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia. Khan also underlined the importance of public-private collaboration, skill development, and market linkages, especially for women entrepreneurs and artisans in underserved areas.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to strategic measures aimed at unlocking the sector's export and employment potential.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday visited the under-construction Technology Park in Islamabad and expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work, directing authorities to expedite the construction process and ensure its completion within the originally stipulated timeframe. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, the premier underscored the strategic importance of the project for Pakistan's economic and technological development. He stressed that the facility must meet international standards, both in infrastructure and services, in order to fulfill its intended role in advancing the country's digital economy. 'All stakeholders must accelerate their efforts to complete the Technology Park at the earliest,' PM Shehbaz said during the visit. US tariff cuts open new doors for Pakistan's auto sector, says Kamal
With the recent US tariff reduction opening fresh opportunities for Pakistani auto exports, Minister of Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Wednesday unveiled plans to strengthen the sector, forming a high-level committee to resolve industry challenges. The development came during an auto industry meeting with the commerce minister on Wednesday, read a statement. During the meeting, the minister informed that a high-level committee, including the Ministry of Commerce, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the Ministry of Industries and Production, has been formed to resolve auto industry issues. Meanwhile, industrialists urged the government to protect the local auto sector from importing old vehicles. They said that production costs have increased due to new technology. Kamal informed that a government strategy will be prepared for the auto sector development and exports. 'After tractors and motorcycles, now cars will also be exported,' he said. The minister was of the view that the recently announced tariff reduction agreement with the US has created new opportunities for auto exports. The government believes that Pakistan's exporters are poised to gain a significant competitive edge in the US market after the government successfully negotiated a reduction in reciprocal tariffs from 29% to 19%. This marks the lowest tariff rate in the region and presents a major opportunity to boost Pakistan's exports to the United States. Meanwhile, Kamal invited the auto industry to join the new industrial policy. He noted that healthy competition is increasing in the Pakistani auto market. The commerce minister informed that tariffs on the auto sector would be reduced gradually in the next five years.
