
Francis Ford Coppola to host S.F. screening of ‘Megalopolis,' the way it was ‘meant to be seen'
Billed as 'An Evening With Francis Ford Coppola and 'Megalopolis' Screening,' the Aug. 1 event at the Palace of Fine Arts is the final stop on a tour organized by Live Nation. Tickets are on sale at ticketmaster.com.
'Megalopolis,' released theatrically in September, was the 'Godfather' filmmaker's dream project for decades. The Napa Valley resident famously footed the $120 million budget himself in part by selling a portion of his Sonoma County wine empire. The film, beset by controversy, pulled in only $14 million globally. Later, Coppola suggested he was near bankruptcy.
The film has divided critics, including here at the Chronicle.
Undeterred, the 86-year-old Coppola has declined to release the film to streaming, and has hosted screenings off and on since the film's run in theaters.
'This is the way 'Megalopolis' was meant to be seen, in a large venue, with a crowd and followed by intense interactive discussions about the future,' Coppola said in a statement released by Live Nation.
After the screening of the over two-hour epic, Coppola is scheduled to host an 'in-depth interactive discussion' called 'How to Change Our Future.' The discussion also includes a Q&A with the audience.
'Megalopolis' stars Adam Driver as architect Cesar Catilina, whose vision of a utopia in New Rome is at odds with corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), with the mayor's daughter (Nathalie Emmanuel) caught in the middle. The all-star cast includes Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza and Dustin Hoffman.
Driver defended the film and its maker as Coppola received the American Film Institute's 50th Life Achievement Award at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles in April.
'This is a principled life, and for a year in our culture when the importance of the arts is minimized, and our industry is seemingly out in the open, then the only metric to judge a film's success is by how much money it makes,' Driver said. 'I hang on to individuals like Francis for inspiration, who live through their convictions, through big moves, all in service of pushing the medium forward.
'Francis took $120 million and created a singular gesture for what he thought film could be, and I think that's pretty great.'

Meet Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty's version

Fogerty stopped recording in the late 1970s over a dispute about a contract clause; later he was sued by the label, in part for allegedly plagiarizing a Creedence song in a solo track. Meanwhile, he wouldn't perform Creedence songs live to protest the fact that he did not own the rights to the songs because of his initial record deal. (He also had to give up his artist royalties for Creedence songs to be allowed to sign with Warner Records as a solo artist in the 1980s.) Advertisement Now, all of that has changed. This Friday, Fogerty will release 'Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years,' a collection of re-recordings of his early classics. The album is a celebration of the fact that Fogerty has finally claimed ownership of his catalog. Advertisement Sixteen of the record's 20 songs were on 'Chronicle,' the best-selling Creedence Clearwater Revival greatest hits album, but Fogerty has replaced cover songs like 'Susie Q' with other originals such as 'Porterville' and 'Wrote a Song for Everyone.' The subtitle, 'John's Version,' is a wink to Fogerty credits his wife, Julie, with his overall happiness, getting the rights back, and recording the new album. 'Love is the whole story here,' he said. 'I don't know that I would have got my songs back if it wasn't for Julie.' Fogerty said he felt 'duty-bound' to keep fighting for the song rights over the years, but was unable to find the right path. He had met unsuccessfully with Saul Zaentz, the record label owner with whom he'd battled for decades. But by 2014, Zaentz had died, and Julie, aided by industry legend Irving Azoff, devised a plan to leave the new label owner a vested interest in the songs, while making John the primary owner. Fogerty said the album was recorded in 'an atmosphere of overwhelming love,' featuring his sons Shane and Tyler as his sidemen. Fogerty, who brought in as much original equipment as possible (such as a Neve recording console from the early 1970s), was especially thrilled to record these tunes using his 1969 Rickenbacker guitar, which he had personalized by changing the tuners, the whammy bar, and pickup. Advertisement Fogerty gave the guitar away in 1973 when he was distancing himself from all things Creedence, and years later passed at a chance to buy it back for $40,000. But in 2017, Julie tracked it down and bought it for him as a Christmas present. Fogerty recorded most of the songs in the original key. He said that while he's lost a bit of his top range, he's preserved his voice by quitting smoking, taking care of his overall health, and cutting out coffee on tour. ('I used to drink seven cups a day, but you get reflux and that's gonna hit your vocal cords,' he said). But it still took Fogerty a while to capture what he wanted vocally. When he first started singing over the basic tracks, he thought he knew what he was doing. 'The first day, we did 'Proud Mary' and I just walked in and sang it — after singing it thousands of times over the years, I thought I was honoring the song the best I could,' he said. 'But later, after spending months on the process, filling in the background vocals, lead guitar parts and all of that, I listened to the vocals and it was immediately evident to me that they weren't up to par.' Upon reflection, Fogerty realized that as a young man, recording those songs felt like 'a matter of life and death, so my whole being was in that.' To recapture the magic, he went back and repeatedly listened to every nuance of his original versions so he would get into the right mind-set — 'to be human, not just a robot singing on the beat.' Advertisement Ultimately, Fogerty wasn't seeking a perfect replica of every inflection. 'It would be beating the thing to death to make every little thing exactly the same,' he said. Instead, he tried to find the 'spirit' of each song. Fogerty said that people who'd heard the album have commented on how joyous it sounds, but also that it feels fresh. 'I'm not sure if they mean the fidelity or if they just mean the happiness that seems to be jumping out of the so-called grooves,' Fogerty said. 'But I do believe there's a palpable thing there. None of us know how long we're going to be here on this earthly plane and I'm just so happy to experience getting my songs back during my lifetime.'

60-year-old S.F. pub featured in movies has closed
After more than 60 years in San Francisco's Tenderloin, the popular medieval-themed dive bar Edinburgh Castle Pub has closed its doors at 950 Geary St. Owner Tay Kim, who bought the bar in 1999, confirmed the closure in a message to the Chronicle. U.S. Bank filed a foreclosure lawsuit against the bar in February 2024 for a more than $700,000 loan made in 2009, records show. According to the lawsuit, Edinburgh Castle stopped making monthly payments on the loan in 2023. This June, a court appointed receiver took possession of the property, and an auctioneer was appointed to sell the building. The pub has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1959. It was a favorite spot for a slew of famed writers, and hosted readings from the likes of Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, whose book 'Trainspotting' was adapted to a play first staged at the venue, before it became a film. He staged the American debut of the production at the bar, which he would later adapt into a hit movie. The Castle was also featured in the films 'So I Married an Axe Murderer' and 'Venom.' Despite its popularity in the 1990s and 2010s, when it was known to host live music, business in the historic space has been slower over the years, and Kim even put the bar up for sale in 2019. In the end, Kim told the Chronicle, 'COVID really was the main catalyst for our demise. We lost approximately 70% of our business. I've been there for 31 years so it was a good run at a place where magic happened. I don't miss it now but I'll miss it in time surely.' Mario Cortez contributed to this report. FTC alleges group fraudulently flipped Taylor Swift seats on Ticketmaster
The Federal Trade Commission accused a shadowy group of flooding Ticketmaster with fake accounts to purchase and resell tickets to concerts by Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen and other top artists. The FTC alleged that between Nov. 1, 2022, and Dec. 30, 2023, a core group of three individuals used a network of sites such as Totaltickets, TotallyTix and Front Rose Tix to purchase at least 379,776 tickets from Ticketmaster, spending nearly $57 million. The complaint states they then resold those tickets on secondary marketplaces for nearly $64 million. The trio allegedly used software to mask IP addresses, purloined credit cards and SIM cards to create fake Ticketmaster accounts. They also enlisted friends and family to create Ticketmaster Verified Fan accounts, giving small sign-up bonuses and kickbacks for creating new accounts. The FTC alleges that the group made $1.2 million from flipping tickets to Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour in 2023 alone. According to the complaint, at a Las Vegas Taylor Swift concert, 'Defendants used 49 different accounts to purchase 273 tickets to Taylor Swift's March 25, 2023, concert at Allegiant Stadium, dramatically exceeding The Eras Tour's 2023 six-ticket limit. Defendants then marked up and resold these tickets, netting $119,227.21 in revenue.' For one Bruce Springsteen show at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 1, 2023, 'Defendants used 277 different accounts to purchase 1,530 tickets, dramatically exceeding Springsteen and the E Street Band's four-ticket limit. Defendants marked up and resold these tickets, netting $20,900.84 in revenue.' The FTC alleges their actions are a violation of the Better Online Ticket Sales Act. Representatives for Live Nation did not immediately return a request for comment. While Ticketmaster is not accused of any wrongdoing in the complaint, Swift famously lambasted Ticketmaster after the Eras Tour on-sale fiasco in which many fans were locked out of opportunities to buy tickets and saw seats instantly snapped up and placed on resale markets at many times the face value. 'There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I'm trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward,' she wrote in a 2022 social media post. 'I'm not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them multiple times if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could.' 'It really pisses me off that a lot of [fans] feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them,' Swift added. The incident prompted rowdy hearings in Congress and a federal antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster and parent firm Live Nation. Although Ticketmaster is not targeted in the complaint, the FTC does include a slide that it says is from a 2018 presentation deck, where Ticketmaster warns of 'Serious negative economic impact if we move to 8 ticket limit across the board.' In March, President Trump issued an executive order to combat fraudulent ticket reselling practices.
