Tim Cone urges Gilas Pilipinas to maximize Justin Brownlee's impact beyond scoring
Such was the story in the Filipinos' 66-57 win over Iraq, where the rest of the crew stepped up big time amid the offensive struggles of Brownlee.
"That's what we've been talking about. We have to use Justin not just to be as a scorer for us, but we can play off of him because he does draw so much attention," Cone said.
"And we actually made our run in that second quarter with Justin out of the game so everybody was like more involved."
Brownlee has been phenomenal for Gilas in their two losing efforts to open the tournament.
The naturalized forward posted 19 points laced with seven rebounds and two assists before fouling out in their 95-87 loss to Chinese Taipei early Wednesday.
He then detonated for 37 points on 7-of-12 shooting from downtown against New Zealand while also grabbing five boards, three dimes, and one steal en route to a 94-86 defeat.
Aware of his scoring prowess, Iraq made sure to shut Brownlee down during their duel on Saturday. The versatile forward was held to just eight points to go with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
But even with their star player's scoring woes, the Filipinos managed to eke out the nine-point victory that allowed the country to clinch a ticket in the qualification to quarterfinals against host Saudi Arabia.
"He's such a tremendous player. It's easy to sit there and watch him play and I mean from a teammate standpoint, we're all standing and watching him play because he's incredible," Cone said.
"But we have to continue to learn how to use him when they're denying him because that means they're not in a position to help."
With Brownlee struggling to convert points, Dwight Ramos stepped up to the plate and erupted for 21 points while AJ Edu chipped in nine markers.
Cone hopes to see more of this from his wards moving forward.
"There are times that we're gonna get open because of that and guys just gotta step up and this guy (Ramos) did. For the most part, we did that tonight," he added.
"But yeah, I really believe this is the kind of game we envision we would play."

CJ Perez taken to hospital after injury in Gilas' OT win vs Saudi Arabia
Gilas Pilipinas' 95-88 overtime triumph over Saudi Arabia came at a costly price as CJ Perez was taken to the hospital following an apparent ankle injury during the qualification to quarterfinals clash in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup early Tuesday. The veteran guard looked to have hurt his right ankle while going for a loose ball at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter, further adding to Gilas' personnel woes with Calvin Oftana already sitting out the game due to his own ankle injury. "The only bad part about all this is the injury to CJ. Looks like it's a bad injury. He's in the hospital now," Gilas head coach Tim Cone said. "We don't know the extent of it but it didn't look good. I'm not gonna pretend to be a doctor and tell you what it is, but it was not a good injury so our prayers are with him." Missing two of their stalwarts, the Filipinos still withstood a gallant effort from the hosts, though it took an extra five minutes to get the job done. Brownlee finished with 29 points, none bigger than his cold-blooded three over a smaller defender that tied the game at 79 and forced an extra period. Gilas coach Tim Cone on Justin Brownlee heroics vs Saudi Arabia: 'That's not unusual'
Justin Brownlee's game-saving performance against Saudi Arabia was nothing out of the ordinary for Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone, who has watched the naturalized forward hit many clutch shots in his career. Brownlee buried a clutch three-pointer to force a 79-all deadlock in the regulation and eventually drag the Saudis to overtime during their qualification to quarterfinals duel in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. He then linked up with the young guns Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos, and AJ Edu to close out a 95-88 victory. But for Cone, Brownlee's latest magical performance was just another chapter in a story he's seen unfold many times before. "It was a special game. It was a special performance by both teams. The home team really came to play and they were phenomenal," Cone said in the post-game press conference. "They posed a lot of problems for us and by all rights, they had the game won except for the guy sitting to my right who hit the big shots. If you know his history, that's not unusual. He's been hitting big shots." Cone and Brownlee's relationship goes beyond the national team as the two were behind a number of titles for Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, many of which were made possible by the latter's clutch plays. On the international stage, Cone has witnessed Brownlee work his magic as well, most notably during their historic gold medal run at the 19th Asian Games in 2023, where the naturalized forward showcased his scoring prowess. In their game against China in the semifinals, Brownlee detonated for 33 points to help the Philippines return to the Asian Games finals again after 33 years. He then led the offense in the finals against Jordan to end the country's 61-year gold medal drought. "I'm his coach in his club team and when we played the Asian Games, he was hitting big shots so this is nothing foreign to Justin," Cone added. "Then we came out and played very well in the overtime, really got the groove going, got some momentum. But man, what a special game that was." For Brownlee, the game was one to remember, as he credited both his teammates and the opposing side for giving fans a special contest. "I agree with coach, it was a great game. The host team came out and showed great support from the fans and as a player, these are the games you dream about and you really look forward to playing," said Brownlee, who finished with a team-high 29 points.
