Sergio Garcia makes Ryder Cup captaincy feelings clear as Spain confirmed as host
Sergio Garcia admitted it would be an honour to be a Ryder Cup captain just 48 hours before the 2031 matches were confirmed for a return to his homeland.
The clash between Europe and United States in six years time will be staged at Camiral in Costa Brava, near Barcelona.
Camiral will follow September's clash at Bethpage Black in New York, Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027 and the 2029 staging at Hazeltine in Minnesota.
It will be the second time Spain has hosted the Ryder Cup 34 years after the legendary Seve Ballesteros captained Europe to victory at Valderrama in 1997. Spain will become the first country in continental Europe to host more than one Ryder Cup with a rich history including 11 Spaniards playing, as well as Ballesteros and Jose-Maria Olazabal being winning captains.
Garcia is also the all-time record points scorer from either side with 28-and-a-half points from his 10 appearances.
After his final round at The Open on Sunday, Garcia was asked a variety of questions about his chances of making this year's team for Bethpage.
Ironically, within that particular interview, Garcia was also asked if, regardless of what happens in September, captaincy was back on the table for him in the future. He responded: 'I don't want to think about it yet, but it's something that obviously would be a nice thing, a nice honour to have. I really don't want to think about that right now. I've got my mind on other things.'
Garcia is, of course, desperate to make skipper Luke Donald 's side for September's New York showdown and said: "It would mean the world to me to be there. Obviously if I can help the team, that's my main goal, I've always said it. I think that I can bring things to the team that any team that would probably need. Obviously at the end of the day, he's going to make whatever he thinks is the best decision for him and his team, at the end of the day. So we'll see."
Meanwhile, Euro chief Guy Kinnings says Spain is fully deserving of a Ryder Cup return. The chief executive of the European Tour Group, said: 'Today's announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe's leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup.
'The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world's leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time.
'This agreement has taken many months of collaborative discussions, so we are grateful not only to Denis O'Brien and his team at Camiral, but also to the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish Government, the Province of Girona and Barcelona Tourism for their vision and commitment to hosting this major global event.
'We have also secured significant support from the private sector in Costa Brava and Barcelona, including Estrella Damm's long-term commitment, which will play a big role in the road to Ryder Cup 2031 as we showcase the region to our global audience.'
Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, president of the Consejo Superior de Deportes, said: 'The Government of Spain welcomes the selection of Camiral as the host venue for the 2031 Ryder Cup, a global sporting event that will showcase our country to millions of viewers around the world.
'The Ryder Cup is not only one of the most prestigious competitions on the international sporting calendar, but also an exceptional platform to demonstrate Spain's ability to successfully host major 21st-century events, combining world-class infrastructure, unparalleled natural environment and a globally renowned tourism, cultural and culinary offering.
'Furthermore, hosting the Ryder Cup for the second time, 34 years after the historic edition at Valderrama, will firmly establish Spain as an international benchmark in the organisation of major sporting events.
'Without a doubt, this designation is also a tribute to the legacy of Spanish golf and to our country's unwavering commitment to sport. A sector that is also an industry generating employment and economic growth as well as to sustainable tourism and organisational excellence.'
Juan Guerrero-Burgos, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, said: 'It is an honour for Spain to host the Ryder Cup for the second time in history. The previous experience at Valderrama in 1997 was extraordinary. The economic impact, media coverage and more importantly, the legacy to our sport, tourism and awareness of golf in our country were unbelievable.
'Spanish golf has grown significantly in the last 25 years due to the incredible influence of that Ryder Cup in 1997, which helped to make golf accessible to everybody, many public golf courses were built and inspired new generations of players.
'The union of all public institutions and the support of Camiral will make possible another unforgettable Ryder Cup in 2031, where we will also pay tribute to all the Spanish golfers who have contributed so much to its history, with the legacy of Severiano Ballesteros always in mind.'

Prince William pauses summer break with Kate and kids to make major announcement
Prince William has been enjoying some family time away from his royal duties but has now halted their break for an announcement. Prince William will make a visit to Switzerland to cheer on the Lionesses in their Euro 2025 final on Sunday in an announcement made by Kensington Palace. The Prince of Wales, who is patron of the Football Association, will be at the finale of Women's Euros in Basel after England were victorious against Italy last night. They will play the winners of the semi-final between Germany and Spain, which takes place tonight. Both William and Kate have stepped away from their royal duties over the past week to spend some quality time with their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who are currently off school on their summer break. It's likely William and the rest of the Wales family have been keeping a close eye on the fortunes of the Lionesses as straight after their extra-time win last night thanks to a winning goal from Chloe Kelly. The prince took to social media to gush: "Brilliant performance @Lionesses! One game from glory!" Earlier in the tournament, the future King travelled to Switzerland to watch the England women's team in their group match against the Netherlands, which they won 4-0. Before they headed off for the championships, he also visited the team at their St George's Park training ground, the Mirror reports. There, he told them: "The men's team could definitely learn off your camaraderie and your team environment. You're brilliant together, you create a very unique unit that is rare in lots of other sports. "So hold onto that, treasure that, build on it, because it's one of your greatest assets." William previously handed over the trophy to the England women's team when they won the 2022 Women's Euros after beating Germany at Wembley. However, he was heavily criticised in 2023 when he did not travel to support the team after they reached the World Cup final against Spain the following year, which they ultimately lost. He did send his best wishes ahead of the match though with a video message where he wished the players good luck alongside his daughter Charlotte. It's not known if any of his three kids will join him at Sunday's match, although his eldest son Georgen did accompany him at the men's Euro final against Spain in Berlin last year, which they lost. The announcement of William's presence at the final comes after the King also issued a statement last night to congratulate the team after reaching the final. In a statement posted on social media, the King said: 'My wife and I join all our family in wishing you, the proud Lionesses, our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the Uefa Euro tournament. 'Your journey to this stage has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing the skill, determination (and test of nerve!) for which your team is so rightly celebrated. Knowing the Lionesses' fighting spirit, I suspect we are in for another thrilling encounter on Sunday. 'Your achievements continue to inspire countless girls and women across the nation, proving once again that with dedication and teamwork, anything is possible. Good luck, England. May you roar to victory once more. Charles R." Prime Minister Keir Starmer also posted on social media 'what a performance', adding: 'Into the final and inspiring the nation. Let's bring it home.'

Casemiro thinks Liverpool could be signing a future world-beater as transfer 'accelerates'
Casemiro has played with a plethora of world-class talents but made an effort to name reported Liverpool target Rodrygo as a player capable of following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi Casemiro admitted that Rodrygo can become one of the very best players in the world with Liverpool advancing in talks with the Real Madrid star's camp. The Manchester United midfielder was team-mates with the winger in Spain for three years and was certainly best positioned to analyse the heights he believed his compatriot could reach. The 24-year-old has established himself as a vital player for the Spanish giants in recent years but suffered a decrease in importance last season under Carlo Ancelotti due to the signing of Kylian Mbappe. He started just 22 league games, while getting only 92 minutes of action during Madrid's run in the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this month. His lack of game-time has led to uncertainty over his future, with Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly interested in the forward. It was earlier this year that Casemiro - who spent nine years with Madrid - showered praise on Mbappe and his former team-mates, including Rodrygo. Speaking to Diario AS, the Brazilian insisted that while the Frenchman has the ability to be the world's best, it's a label in football that the 24-year-old is also capable of. "He [Mbappe] is one of those players that when you play against them you don't know how to stop him. He's not [on top of] the podium yet, but he'll get there," Casemiro said. "He's the heir to [ Messi and Ronaldo ], along with Vinicius Jr, who continues to grow and improve in every game, Rodrygo, and Fede Valverde." It wasn't the first time he sang the praises of the winger as he said in 2022: "He lit up my eyes. "He's a star. God gave him the gift of playing football. Rodrygo knows when to attack, when to defend, when to be more aggressive, when to play more vertically. This kid is one of the most complete players of his generation." With speculation suggested Luis Diaz is ready to depart Anfield with Bayern Munich interested in the Colombian, reports indicate that the Reds are ready to pounce on Rodrygo with talks commencing with his entourage, according to Foot Mercato. They claim discussions have begun between the Premier League champions' hierarchy and Rodrygo's camp in order to seek out the possibility of a transfer after six years in Spain. While no contact has been directly made with Madrid, the winger's preferred destination is said to be England. The Gunners are also said to be interested in pursuing Rodrygo despite signing one wide player already in Noni Madueke. A third Premier League have reportedly joined the race, with Tottenham Hotspur aiming to lure the Brazilian to north London. AS reports that Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, is planning to use his "good relationship" with Madrid to capture Rodrygo for a lower price than the £76m he's reportedly been valued at.

Scottie Scheffler and wife called PGA Tour star immediately after awkward incident
Childhood friends Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns have both ascended the ranks to become PGA Tour winners - but their friendship was massively put to the test in 2021 Scottie Scheffler and his wife reached out to PGA Tour star Sam Burns for a lengthy phone call after an awkward Ryder Cup incident threatened to "ruin" their friendship. World No. 1 Scheffler has been friends with the 22nd-ranked Burns since their teenage years. Their shared journey to stardom on the PGA Tour has only strengthened their bond. Burns, 29, hails from Louisiana and was even the best man at Scheffler's wedding when he married Meredith Scudder in December 2020. Their families have become close over the years, sharing rental homes at numerous tour stops, holidaying together, and even hosting couples' board game nights. But their close friendship, which is more like family, was threatened by an awkward and unusual scenario back in 2021. Both players were in the running for the final Ryder Cup roster spot, but US Captain Steve Stricker decided to snub five-time PGA Tour winner Burns, phoning him to inform him he wouldn't be on the team. The spot went to Scheffler, who had not yet claimed a victory on the tour. But rather than letting the awkwardness and any bad feelings linger, the Texan and his wife made the classy move to call his long-time friend, talking for half an hour while processing their emotions. "That can ruin a friendship if it's not something that's talked about," Scheffler later admitted. Burns recalled: 'Me, Caroline, Scottie and Meredith spent a long time on a phone call with these weird emotions of like, man, I am really sad but also happy for him. If it had been someone else, I would have been more disappointed that I wasn't on the team.' The decision turned out to be the right one, as Scheffler went on to defeat then-world No. 1 Jon Rahm in the US victory. Since then, Scheffler has been on an upward trajectory, clinching four majors and becoming the most dominant golfer since Tiger Woods. The 29-year-old has held the world's No. 1 ranking since May 2023, making his current streak at the top the longest since Woods' from June 2005 to October 2010. However, his meteoric rise hasn't affected their friendship, with Scheffler giving a sneak peek into what their morning routine would look like ahead of this year's US Open at Oakmont. Scheffler said: 'The conversation in the morning will be that we'll just hang out, there will be our two little kids running around. There's nothing crazy, there's not much to say. 'Sam has been preparing for moments like this for a long time and he's put himself into a position to win the golf tournament. He's going to go out and try to execute. At the end of the day, all he's going to do is try to do his best and that's what I'm going to do tomorrow as well.' Burns remains a proud friend, having watched Scheffler's remarkable achievements from up close. Aside from being Scheffler's biggest supporter on the fairways, he has also benefitted by receiving advice from the golfing powerhouse. Burns explained earlier this year: 'Scottie is obviously an incredible player, I don't think I need to say that. We spend a lot of time together and being able to talk to him, learn from him and ask him questions has been really cool. 'As good of a player he is, he's an even better guy and I think that's what makes it really special to watch, you want to root for someone like that. He's an easy guy to root for. It's been nice to pick his brain and ask him certain things.' When asked whether he'd felt slightly envious of Scheffler's achievements, Burns candidly responded: 'Of course, as a competitor, that's why we show up to play and we play to win. Watching him have success brings me a lot of joy. 'Him, his wife Meredith and son Bennett, they are an unbelievable family and it's been such a joy to watch how they steward that success to others around them. The amount of respect we have for them is very high.' While Scheffler delivered a stunning performance to claim his first Claret Jug by four shots at Royal Portrush last week, Burns ended up T45 after posting one-under.
