Malaysia Seeks Collaboration Beyond ASEAN, Eyes Maldives Partnership
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is intensifying efforts to strengthen collaboration within ASEAN and with neighbouring nations such as the Maldives, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that while Malaysia prioritises closer ties within ASEAN, it must also extend engagement beyond the region to friendly countries that share common aspirations for development and prosperity.
'In this context, the Maldives represents an important partner. We value not only the longstanding people-to-people ties between Malaysia and Maldives but also see tremendous potential to expand our collaboration in trade, investment, digital innovation, and environmental sustainability," he said in his keynote address at the Maldives-Malaysia Business Forum 2025 here today.

He referenced a 2022 incident where two Malaysians, a husband and wife, aided Mossad operatives in entering the country through Thailand. "Let us not forget: previously, a Mossad agent entered Malaysia… I commend the Royal Malaysia Police for successfully arresting and charging those involved." Anwar said a "Negara Madani" must reflect both sovereignty and moral clarity, especially on issues of human rights such as the situation in Gaza. "Just yesterday, Israel launched another brutal attack. We strongly condemn it. How is it that one country is allowed to carry out such violence repeatedly and with impunity? Even worse is when people in Malaysia, an independent nation, are afraid to speak up," he said. Anwar also called on the nation's youth not to be easily misled. "Do not be naive. Do not be easily deceived by what you see on social media." The prime minister's remarks follow renewed Israeli air strikes, which he described as part of a long-standing pattern of impunity. He stressed that Malaysia's principled stance on Gaza will not be swayed by international pressure. "This is what it means to be a 'Negara Madani'. We do not care whether certain countries approve or not," he said.

PM Anwar arrives to officiate HAWANA 2025 celebration
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) to officiate the highlight of the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration. He arrived at 11.45 am and was welcomed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and his deputy Teo Nie Ching. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa; Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai; Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the director of HAWANA 2025. Gerik crash: Not just driver, bus company should also be held responsible
KOTA TINGGI: New laws, such as the Corporate Manslaughter Act adopted in the United Kingdom (UK) and proposed for introduction in Malaysia, would establish broader and proportionate liability to companies, not just individuals, accountable in cases of accidents or management negligence. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that under the Act, the entire organisation, including managers, engineers, and board members, could be prosecuted if found to have failed in upholding proper safety and operational standards. 'This is how it is, if a bridge collapses, or a bus accident occurs, it will not be just the engineer or driver who will be punished. If the punishment is hanging, the chief executive officer will also have to be hanged. That is what corporate manslaughter means. Board members must also be held responsible,' she told Bernama here today. Azalina, who is the Pengerang Member of Parliament, told reporters this to see the progress of the repair work of the Felda Air Tawar 1 Bridge here. Repair work on the bridge is scheduled for completion in September this year. Azalina said that if the government is serious about strengthening accountability and corporate governance, it is time for Malaysia to consider such a bill to prevent a repeat of the tragedy and ensure justice for the victims. Earlier, Azalina also received her instrument of appointment as the Honorary Commissioner of the Civil Defence Force (APM) from APM Chief Commissioner Datuk Aminurrahim Mohamed, who also handed the instrument of appointment as Honorary Deputy Commissioner to the State Education and Information Committee chairman, Aznan Tamin and Penawar Assemblyman Fauziah Misri as Honorary Colonel.
